ST. PAUL, Minn. — Republican Norm Coleman must pay Democrat Al Franken $94,783 to cover court costs for his appeal of Minnesota Senate election results.

A Ramsey County court administrator entered the judgment Wednesday. It results from the two-month trial that ended with Coleman 312 votes short of Franken.

Minnesota law required Coleman to cover some of Franken's court costs because the race's outcome didn't change. The judgment excludes Franken's attorney fees.

The men have spent $50 million so far on their campaigns and legal fight over the November election. That's more than double the cost of the 2002 race when Coleman captured what had been a Democratic seat.

The Minnesota Supreme Court hasn't said when it will rule on Coleman's appeal.

I would think the residents of Minnesota would be getting the sh*ts of Coleman and his games. They're aren't properly represented. Time for him to reimburse the state for the time he's used and gotten paid for.

Go away Coleman.

He'll never pay. He'll probably tie up our legal system and waste more tax payer money and appeal or something. What a useless person.

Poor Norm - he owes a heck of a lot more than that for this long-drawnout fiasco he visited on the people of his state.

Hell - it isn't their money, so what do they care.

One has to wonder why any individual would spend the money required to get elected to office - US Senate or any lower office - when the pay for the office is so minuscule next to the campaign costs.

By the way, I am sure Coleman can get the 95K from one of his donors, like the one that gave him the Washington DC residence for a fraction of its real rental value.

If this makes you ashamed to be an American, then you have a very low opinion of yourself. I suggest you leave my country and find one that fits your low self-esteem a$$!

I think andy means that this money could have been spent so much more effectively on so many things.

I'm not. The recount was mandated by State law, and while I think Coleman's actions were vile, he was exercising his legal rights. Many of us in MN who support Franken still respect Coleman's right to sue, though Coleman has earned no such respect as a person.
The ruling proves that the system can work!

Yes, we all know he had a right to sue and a right to appeal. Any crank with residency in the US can file frivolous lawsuits ad nauseum. That is part of the flaw in the system, that it assumes people are rational and mean well and do not want to waste their time and money on a fiasco. It happens so often that cranks sue their neighbors or their towns that liability insurance policies generally cover the costs to defend false and frivolous suits. That does not mean someone in a position of honor and respect should act like a shameless crank, that we should not expect more mature, rational and dignified behavior.

Here is Norm Coleman, supposedly a "public servant", throwing the interests of the people he supposedly represents to the dogs for his own ego and to obtain time to delay the Obama agenda. It is outrageous, and I will not agree that what is mandated by law is the highest ethical standard that we require of those who represent us.

Maybe Coleman can pull the money out of a car trunk the way Franken pulled votes out of a car trunk?

That never happened. Try reading the court decision instead of Coleman's fund raising e-mails. There were no found ballots and no districts were there were more votes than registered voters. Coleman's lawyers have admitted there was no evidence of fraud, it is time for you to do the same.
