Merkely

It's not every day that a sitting senator takes to the floor to call out a GOP strategist. But on Wednesday, Oregon Democrat Jeff Merkley did just that, whacking messaging guru Frank Luntz for writing a blueprint for demonizing health care reform and Republican officials for dutifully following his lead.

"Now, you may think that I'm raising this document before you, this -- this plan for how to kill health care, and that maybe it doesn't have any bearing on the real debate," said Merkley, a freshmen Democrat, from the floor, waving a thin set of white papers in his right hand. "But it absolutely does. These talking points are being echoed in this very chamber in order to kill health care."

What followed was a point-by-point comparison of Luntz's 28-page memo, distributed to congressional Republicans, to some of recent talking points coming straight from the mouths of GOP leadership. Said the Senator:

Here we go. Frank Luntz's memo, that's his memo on how to kill health care, came out in April. It says - talking point number five - "Health denial care horror stories in Canada and other countires do resonate, but you have to humanize them. You notice we recommend the phrase 'government takeover' rather than 'government run' or 'government control.'" Why? Because government takeover sounds even scarier.

So what did we hear in the chamber from our minority leader just recently? I quote - "Americans are concerned about a government takeover of health care and for good reason." And it goes on. So recognize that that is a point that's coming from a document about how to kill health care, not a responsible debate about the plan we have in front of us.

Merkley's remarks represent a new line of political debate about the reform process. The extent to which Democrats can establish that opposition to greater government involvement in health care is driven by poll-tested talking points, as opposed to legitimate ideological disagreements, could go some ways towards affecting the legislative process.

To be certain, progressive health care advocates also have well-tuned talking points and polling data at their disposal. But the conventional wisdom going into the upcoming reform battle has held that the Clinton-era effort at an overhaul was, in part, derailed by massive and correlated effort between private industry actors and sympathetic Republicans.

There is little public appetite for that happening again. Hence the benefits in putting Luntz at the center of the debate.

This is why conservatives have no place in American government- their only objective is to corrupt the government, and their only goal is to destroy America.

Whether its a teabagging lunatic, a wingnut in Congress, or a domestic terrorist, they are all of one mind with one goal.

When these guys talk up there, do others actually listen with an open mind or have they pre-determined their decision? Seems like a waste of time considering how partisan everyone is.

There is no one as repulsive as that republican lackey, Luntz. His "polls" are about as fair and balanced as you know who.

Maybe we really do need a civil war. It worked back in 1860-65. We can cleanse out the conservsatives since we outnumber them 2-1. Plus we have jesus on our side =)

No not a civil war. A "velvet revolution" similar to how the Czechs and the slovks split up. Give the repulse-icans, Texas, Utah and Oklahoma, and all their gu.ns. Then see how long it will be before they turn against each other.

I voted for Merkley here in Oregon. I am glad he is showing what we are about in the northwest. All people, not just the rich and white. We have to come together to bury these far right wingers once and for all. Maybe then we can get the decent republicans to take back their party so we can have civil debate again.

Good stuff Senator Merkley. It should be noted that the Political Action Committee - Reuniting Our Country PAC - which was run by JOE LIEBERMAN and Clinton supporter LANNY DAVIS gave $ 5,000 in 2008 to the campaign of Merkley's opponent, Republican Senator Gordon Smith.

If Joe Lieberman & Lanny Davis had prevailed, Merkley would have lost. He won and for that we are grateful. True progressives may remain wary of the likes of Lieberman, Lanny Davis, Mark Penn, Terry Mc Auliffe etc.

Ok that PAC is affiliated with Lieberman so no shock he gave to a republikant, but no place is Lanny Davis mentioned so why the gratuitous Clinton smear? Not on the board and not on the list of big contributors.

It's about time somebody called this out in public. Frank Luntz gets air time to discuss his brilliant strategy to manipulate public opinion and this cynicism that is underneath it is NEVER confronted. He's always presented as a smart guy who knows how to poll and spin language and influence public opinion and gee whiz, isn't that great. A functioning journalism would have him dead and buried (FIGUREATIVELY) as fast as you can say "death tax".

The repulse-icans are always better at "framing" and corrupting the real issues. This has been going on for years. That's why Rahm is in there. Do your job Rahm! I'm getting very weary of being on the defense!

First of all the correct term is DEMOCRATIC. If you didn't notice, the voters of this country elected Obama because republicans ( and I have to admit, too many democrats) do not really understand that there has been a major shift in the way we think about our government. Out of over 30 industrialized nations on the planet, we are the ONLY COUNTRY that does not provide basic health care for its citizens. Just as we are all guaranteed a free education up until college, we should be guranteed basic health care services. If you think bureacrats and insurance companies are not deciding at this very moment how and what services you will be provided, you have never been seriously ill. No other country would want the pay-for-healthcare system that we have here. It's a broken system; it is bankrupting many small businesses and it's time for an option of SINGLE PAYER, which means the government pays, but does not RUN the healthcare industry. No one in any of those 30 countries has lost everything they own because of lack of funds to pay for their healthcare! A huge percentage of americans have indeed lost everything they have worked for all their lives and had to declare bankruptcy because of medical bills. All so the insurance industry executives could make BILLIONS while denying healthcare to americans. We should not have for-profit-healthcare. Period. Its just morally wrong.

Tell Senator Merkley that you approve of his comments, and hope more Democrats would follow his lead instead of the money and bribes from the health insurance industry: http://merkley.senate.gov/contact/
