WASHINGTON — The No. 2 Republican in the House on Thursday compared President Barack Obama's plans for the auto industry to the policies of Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, saying the White House has stripped credit holders of rights and given them to Democratic allies.

"They said, 'Set aside the rule of law, let's strip secured creditors, bondholders, of their rights. Take them away outside of the bankruptcy process and give them to the political cronies and the auto workers' unions," Rep. Eric Cantor, R-Va., said in an interview with The Associated Press.

"It's almost like looking at Putin's Russia," added Cantor, the GOP's House whip. "You want to reward your political friends at the expense of the certainty of law?"

The Obama administration this week set bonus limits on companies that have received billions of dollars in federal bailout money and appointed a "special master" with power to reject pay plans he deems excessive.

Conservatives eagerly compare such government "meddling" and Obama's governing style to leaders half a world away.

"Like Obama, Putin has a fawning media that is intimidated by an uncertain marketplace and looking for any help to stay afloat," John Feehery, a conservative consultant and veteran House Republican spokesman, wrote Wednesday on his blog.

In a wide-ranging interview, Cantor said that Obama's economic rescue plans and Democrats' sweeping overhaul of the health care system will sour with recession-weary voters before the 2010 midterm elections. He predicted Republicans will retake control of the House.

While acknowledging that Democrats may well have the votes to push Obama's health plan through Congress with few or no Republican votes, "it will be at a huge political cost," Cantor said.

"The Democratic agenda is unraveling," he said, elucidating what's become the Republicans' main talking point in recent weeks. "My sense is by November of 2010, (there will be) an electorate that really wants to see a check and a balance on unfettered power."

Democrats enjoy a 256-178 majority in the House, with one vacancy. Republicans would have to have a net gain of 40 seats in November 2010 to reclaim a majority. Cantor said they would begin by looking at the 49 districts that voted for Republican John McCain for president last year but are represented by Democrats.

Republicans are in a titanic struggle over who speaks for the GOP and what the party stands for, conservative principles alone or a "big tent" approach that can accommodate centrist members in the name of growth. Focusing on conservative principles cost the GOP a Senate seat when Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania switched from the GOP to the Democratic Party, putting Obama's party in reach of a crucial 60-seat Senate majority.

The most visible Republicans at present have been deeply unpopular outside the GOP's conservative base: former Vice President Dick Cheney, radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

"The issue for us is rebuilding a governing majority that is comfortable with differences that can transcend the divisiveness and unify behind the principles that we know our party has succeeded on," namely limited government and individual rights, Cantor said.

Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., the chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, characterized Cantor's comments as evidence that Republicans lack ideas and leadership.

"It's no wonder that recent polling shows that one-third of Republicans hold an unfavorable view of their own party. Republicans should stop the name-calling, roll up their sleeves and start working with the president and congressional Democrats to turn the economy around," Van Hollen said in a statement.

Cantor dearest, POTUS is cleaning up the mess you and your cronies allowed and approved when your buddies Bush/Cheney were in control. Remember, you and your cronies didn't have a problem with:
1. Cheney and his buddies (Halliburton/Blackwater) getting fat financially on the backs of your troops.
2. Starting an illegal war that we can't magically get out of and at the same time allow the real problem to grow and fester.
3. You sat back and allowed the financial industry to rob us blind with all their trickery and thievery and did nothing to stop them because, they controlled you and your partners.
4. B/C had laws written to allow them to torture and infringe on our basic rights of privacy and you and your buds sat back and allowed it all to take place.
5. Bush spent at a alarming rate and we the American people gained NOTHING!

Under Bush/Cheney and the GOP reigned, we lost our constitutional rights, country's dignity and respect at home and around the world, we were robbed by the biggest crooks in the country (Wall Street) at gun point for years. The poor and inner city children received education comparable to that found in third world countries, under your watch.

Rather than wasting time and looking more pathetic (I know, not possible) why don't you and your racist, ignorant, obstructionist partners try working with President Obama to help him deal with the problems he inherited from your bud GW? .

Well Eric Cantor, you can compare Pres. Obama to anything you like, but the country voted OVERWHELMINGLY for him last Nov. 4, 2008, and Republicans in ALL houses were rejected... FOR A GOOD REASON.

The ONLY thing the Republicans can think of is name-calling? Please. We are so over that, just as this country has moved on from the COLLECTIVE OBSTRUCTIONISTS Republican Party. Yep, the one that wants Pres. Obama and this country to fail for one reason, and one reason only... so that the Republicans can be "in charge" again. Come back and see us IF and WHEN you've gotten your OWN broken party put together, in order for us to even BEGIN to care what you think.

We elected Pres.Obama OVERWHELMINGLY on Nov. 4, 2008 with CLEAR mandates, and this country has moved on to try to clean up the mess that the Republicans brought upon our great country, that hs brought her to her knees. So later for ya'll. Go play somewhere else. You don't get to "play power and control politics" with our lives anymore.

BTW, does Rush Limbaugh know that you're speaking without his approval? If so, I guess that must mean that he is no longer pissed about your little "listening" tour, which he disbanded in short order. So just move right along please, we're busy cleaning up your mess.

First they tried to compare him to Socialists - That failed...

Then they tried to compare him to Hitler - That failed....

Today, its comparing him to Putin - Guess what - that'll fail too!

"namely limited government and individual rights, Cantor said"

Let's see...record government spending and record government growth, record government corruption, no bid contracts to buddies, so-called "patriot" act and other acts violating and diminishing or otherwise taking away individual rights and freedoms...

I don't see your point Cantor.

Eric Cantor, another Republican, who offers only gimmicks (sigh) instead of substance.

I am getting very worried that the new objective by the GOP is to try and incite some fringe element in our society to harm Obama.

Why else would this man say these incendiary comments?
This is not just an isolated incident either.

Palin has called him a Terrorist, a Socialist and god knows what else.

Limbaugh makes his $40,000,000,00 a year salary talking this way for the past two decades so he will not count. But elected officials should have more sincerity in their thoughts words and deeds other than blind ambition.

Obama WAS ELECTED and his power is in the fact that a majority of people voted for Democrats rather than Republicans. It wasn't done by trickery, the majority came about by the Over reach of the Bush administration.
