WASHINGTON — The CIA believes Osama bin Laden is still in Pakistan, and the spy agency is hoping to close in on him as that country's military cracks down on the northwestern tribal area where he is thought to be hiding. CIA Director Leon Panetta told reporters after a speech on Capitol Hill Thursday that finding bin Laden remains one of the CIA's top priorities.

"I guess one of our hopes is that as Pakistani military moves in, combined with our operations, we may have a better chance to get at him," Panetta said.

The CIA has increased the number of officers and recruited agents, or locals who provide information, in Pakistan, Panetta said.

"We have a number of people who are on the ground in Pakistan who are helping us provide targets and who are helping us provide the information that we really need to go after al-Qaida," he said.

He said the Pakistani offensive in the Swat Valley is making very good progress compared to Pakistan's past efforts to crack down on extremists. The Pakistan military says it has killed more than 1,300 militants during the offensive and reclaimed most of the region.

Past offensives against Islamist militants often faltered, with the government choosing to strike peace agreements with the extremists. A peace deal in Swat collapsed in April after the Taliban advanced from there into nearby Buner, just 60 miles from the capital, Islamabad.

Panetta said the CIA is mindful that as it makes progress in Pakistan, al-Qaida leaders could transfer their sights to safe havens elsewhere, such as Yemen and Somalia, which have large ungoverned territories.

Panetta also hinted that the Obama administration is crafting a new approach to confront both North Korea's and Iran's nuclear program.

"The approach that we take to deal with North Korean nuclear development will send a very important signal to Iran in how we deal with them," Panetta said after a speech to the National Italian American Foundation.

He declined to provide details.

North Korea conducted its second underground nuclear test in May. The blast came less than two months after the North fired an intermediate-range rocket over Japan and into the Pacific Ocean. Though North Korea claimed it launched a satellite into space, the U.S. and other countries believe it was meant to test ballistic missile technology.

Iran is reported to be developing the fissile material and missile to fuel and launch a nuclear warhead, but has not yet detonated an atomic bomb. It launched a small satellite into space earlier this year, making progress on technology that could be applies to an intercontinental ballistic missile.

The CIA is closely monitoring the Iranian presidential election to take place Friday. Panetta said current President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad still has the edge, especially in rural areas, and is favored by Iran's religious ruler, but other candidates appear to be gaining ground after a public debate.

"We're sensing now there is some momentum for opposing candidates," he said.

Panetta also said the CIA will spend nearly $250 million in the next five years to double the number of intelligence officers that are proficient in a foreign language. Less than a third of CIA analysts and overseas spies are proficient in a foreign language, according to the agency.

Benazer Bhutto said in an interiew with David Frost, Mar 27th 2008 that bin Laden was dead.
She mentions the name of Omar Sheikh as the man who murdered bin Laden.

You can google the video. I don't know how to do that link thingie.

Marsharraf also claimed that bin Laden was dead but that he couldn't really provided proof. Kinda take that one with a big grain of salt.

IF, he was still alive, why no recent videos of him like he used to do in the past?
I think the powers that rule us need him to be alive or who would they use as the "boogey man?"

Well, Banzir Bhutto said she saw reports he was dead. Then she was killed a day or two later. Whether he's dead or not is irrelevant. His status as the Old Man of the Mountain is assured in the Muslim world. If he IS still alive, he's among the Pashtun. At least one of his sons married a Pashtun woman and between the Taliban and al Qaeda, they have the Pakistani ISI so thoroughly penetrated that they'll get plenty of advance warning if either the US or Pakistani army get close.

As far as assets on the ground, there WAS that guy the Taliban executed who took money and homing beacon chips from the US and then just randomly distributed them wherever he went. Boy, some assets WE got there.

That's funny. I thought his death was confirmed by Benazir Bhutto just before she returned to Pakistan -- at Condoleezza Rice's urgings -- to be assassinated. Here she was saying it on televised British interview:

I'm thinking he's in Vegas. We're so focused on the middle of nowhere that we're not even bothering to look anywhere else.
Chances are he's dead anyway. Haven't seen anything to indicate otherwise, and if we're really looking that hard, we'd have found him by now.
Gotta have an enemy to justify the defense spending, though.

Right. He wasn't in Tora Bora, he was in BORA BORA by the pool sipping a virgin diaquiri.

Interestingly enough I have a sneaking suspicion Bin Laden will be celebrating his 150th birthday one day.

I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed but this guy is not dumb enough to be where he was last seen.

My take? Yemen (family ties) or Saudi Arabia (protected by the royal family)...either way it will be good to see him gone so we can move on.

We should focus more on home grown Domestic Terrorist... they are harder to track because they blend in... even with the SPL trackers, the incident at DC still happened.. why fight a war so far away when we are losing the war (on Terrorism) at home ??

Sure, then we can expand the FBI's entrapment program targeting men.tally ill m.usl.ims. , and uneducated troublemakers to commit acts of terrorism that they never would have attempted if it hadn't been for our government instigators.

Yeah, nice idea.

Listen... a few bad apples that may or may not have acted alone (see above), doesn't make for a domestic terrorism threat. So, to immediately conclude that we should basically now begin funding some huge domestic war on terror is ludicrous. If you want to see what's left of our constitution get completely obliterated, then come on, let's go down that road and see what happens. We'd be living in a police state before you know it.

Stop letting the media scare you.

Media scaring me ??? I lived less than half an hour from the DC incident... let's not forget the DC sniper a few years ago... so unless it hits close to home, unless you have children or love ones in the streets and lived through those times, don't talk to me about what not to worry !!

And here is another thing. Where did I mentioned police state? You automatically assume that will happen. Hmmm when Mayor G started the unspoken war on organized crime back in nyc in the 90s, i don't remember nyc becoming a police state... you are making assumptions on extreme results... there are alot of things that could happen. Why must you think that the FBI will automatically start entraping people? We are not in the 50s anymore and Hoover is no longer the director of FBI !

Obama wears a burka and hangs out in the south of France. Don't fret McCain knows how to catch him and if and when he gets elected to the presidency he will tell the CIA where he is.

Why hasn't Obama captured Bin Laden? Is he waiting until a time where he can gain the most political points??

I refuse to believe this man is still alive. Since his March broadcast on al-Jazeera, Osama bin Laden has seemingly vanished off the face of the earth, without US spy agencies detecting a single trace of him. All his messages are audio and he has not made a video appearance in a very long time. But we have seen his lieutenant Ayman al-Zawahiri appeared on video many times after 9/11.
