DHS Urged To Expedite Updated Report On Right Wing Extremism

Napolitano

Recent incidents of extremist violence claiming the lives of abortion provider George Tiller and a security guard at the Holocaust Museum have prompted calls for the Department of Homeland Security to accelerate the release of an updated report on right-wing extremism.

Amid howls that it had politicized national security, DHS stepped back from a mid-April report it had issued on domestic threats from fringe right-wing groups. "The report is no longer out there," Secretary Janet Napolitano told lawmakers, promising to have the report "replaced or redone in a much more useful and much more precise fashion."

Several weeks later, the findings of the original study have been proven prescient, specifically in its warnings about violent acts from anti-abortion zealots and anti-Semites. Now, demands for that follow-up have grown more urgent.

On Thursday, the judicial advocacy organization, People for the American Way, faxed a letter to Napolitano calling on the Department of Homeland Security Chief to "expedite the approval of the 'Rightwing Extremism' report and release a final version as soon as possible."

"Although the [original] report was withdrawn with the intent of being rewritten, the events of the last two weeks show that its core findings are fundamentally correct: 'The economic downturn and the election of the first African-American president present unique drivers for rightwing radicalization and recruitment.' The Department of Homeland Security is charged with protecting the security of all Americans, and it is essential for the American public to have the unvarnished truth about the rise of dangerous extremism in this country," read the letter from PFAW President Michael Keegan.

"I urge you to expedite the approval of the "Rightwing Extremism" report and release a final version as soon as possible," Keegan added. "Moreover, the report should offer the best available assessment of possible threats from far-right groups and individuals, no matter how politically inconvenient the findings might be to some groups. If the report can not be released immediately, please announce publicly the current status of the report and when you expect it to be published."

A researcher on right-wing organizations noted that the security onus was on DHS to act fast. "The threat of right-wing violence is only increasing," said the source, "and Americans could be put at risk if DHS takes too long to issue a new report or waters the old one down."

Indeed, in the wake of the shooting of a Holocaust Museum security guard by white supremacist James Von Brunn, the original DHS report is getting a more favorable review. Even some critics of the study, who claimed that it compared conservatives and returning veterans to domestic terrorists, acknowledged that their initial reactions may have been hasty and overblown. That said -- and this is important -- the report was never formally pulled, according to a DHS official. Despite reports otherwise, the department, this official said "never retracted the original report." It was, as Napolitano noted in her testimony, "taken off of the intel Web sites." As the official said, DHS "very publicly acknowledged it had flaws."

But, that official added, "We stood by the underlying intel... it was never pulled back from the entities who received it in the first place."

Yep. I knew this was coming. Von Brunn, an 88 year old freak, is the perfect tool to squelch anti-government sentiments. Great ploy! Hook, line & sinker! Wake up folks!

Yep.
You're so right: he was the only right wing extremist to kill since Obama's inauguration.
The only one.

The other two were just in our collective imagination - and all the support for such violence also never happened. Nor did any violent rhetoric encourage similar thoughts in numerous people, who've been since arrested also, after voicing their intentions ion the internet and/or public places.

You're correct: we on the left are engaging in a massive conspiracy to turn America into a Fascist Muslim Nazi Communist state overnight, and you'll be sent a to a Fema camp if you're not careful!

By the way: we're all going to be issued with Kenyan passports, and Sharia law will be integrated into Obama's communist manifesto.

Anyone not happy with this situation will be held in chains on the dark side of the moon - at the camp we held those seven million republican voters last November 4.

HAPPY?

How does DHS make us safer by adding a layer of bureacracy on top of the efforts of the various agencies it is supposed to coordinate? These people couldn't identify or prevent a thre@t unless it b1tch-slapped them across the face.
10:31 AM on 06/12/2009
Well, they identified this one, didn't they? Use your brain a little more and your mouth a little less.

So what ever happened to Peter King. Does he still want Secretary Napolitano to apologize for that prescient DHS report? How much would we all pay to see the woman stand up and ask the gentleman if, McCarthy-like, he had no shame?

I am glad to see that Obama has replaced the word “Terror’ with the word “extremism”.

We can now call it what it is...Religious extremism and Political extremism..

The religious Extremists have taken the words of the Bible and the Koran and twisted them so they are not recognisable as books of Love and Compassion but are books of hypocracy, fear and Hate..

This applies to the Christian, Muslim and Jewish religions

Political Extremism is based on Corruption and greed..Also there is the same theme of hypocracy fear and hate as practised by religions. The Politicians have done the same thing with the Constitution as religion has done with.. the Bible... the Koran... the Torah..

I am glad we can finally call it what it is “Extremism”..

So now they want her to expedite the same report she had to apologize for coming out publicly with a month or so ago. Geez.
10:35 AM on 06/12/2009
I think the people asking for the updated report are different than those who asked for it to be canned. Most on the left knew the original report was accurate to begin with. Those on the right finally shut their mouths for a second is all that's changed.

So the people that were so proud of themselves for keeping us safe only AFTER 9/11 are the ones working so hard to keep vital intelligence from our law enforcement agencies?

Not only that, but they're supporting domestic terrorists.

The article says there have been -- "domestic threats from fringe right-wing groups. " Why aren't these un-American dimwits properly labeled " terrorists" too, as they would be in the middle east? Their objectives are commonly to terrorize anyone that disagrees with them.

GORE VIDAL - PRESCIENT?

On Tim McVeigh, Oklahoma City and our future, today (black, naturally - it is Gore Vidal after all). The extreme militia types are 'the future of the country - the men with the flags and the guns.' "This is just the very start of the violence."

"When we're out of the Empire business, because we're broke, the last enemy of this government -- a permanent wartime government -- is _the_American_people_, with 5m in jail or on parole." (2009 - 7m plus).

Napolitano should resign for not having the courage to tell Limbaugh, McConnell and the rest of the extreme right of the GOP to go pluck themselves from the get go. Maybre now she will show some backbone and call it like it is. Talk about "political correctness."
01:42 AM on 06/12/2009
I agree. I don't know if Obama had anything to do with making her apologize. I think this admn. give in to the Repub. too much and it makes them appear weak.

I don't think it's just Obama or his administration. The left in general has been too sensible about the garbage spewing from the right. Note the lengths pundits on the left have gone to recently to separate out so called good republicans from the words and deeds of their wingnut brethren. Contrast this against the dead silence or worse coming from the other side of the aisle. Call the republicans on it now before it escalates. Place the blame for this right wing violence squarely on their shoulders and make THEM put the brakes on themselves and their foolish followers. I've no interest in hearing one more apologist go on about how the only ones responsible are the shooters themselves. We all know that's nonsense that only serves to allow these hate mongers to continue to further infect an all too vulnerable populace. The fact that mainstream republicans took the meaning of the original DHS report about EXTREME right wing activity to be referring to THEM is all you need to know about where their allegiances lie. I agree that the administration should show more backbone in these matters, but so should we ALL. If politicians are timid it is at least in part because those who put them in power are too.

Statement by U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano on the Threat of Right-Wing Extremism

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/04/24/napolitano-apologizes-veterans-group-rightwing-extremism-report/

Then Fox News reported that she apologized to the American Legion for mentioning returning veterans... However the Southern Poverty Law Center has noted that right wing extremism is more prevailent in the military than in civilian society and that a lot of recruitment occurs there.

The DHS notice was released 4/15/09 and included the paragraph:

"I am aware of the letter from American Legion National Commander Rehbein, and my staff has already contacted him to set up a meeting next week once I return from travel. I will tell him face-to-face that we honor veterans at DHS and employ thousands across the department, up to and including the Deputy Secretary."

Then, on 4/24/09 - the same day as the Fox article you cite, this article was published on HP:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/04/24/homeland-secretary-napoli_n_191326.html

To date, have we had an incident involving a returned soldier? Yet we have had one soldier - on our homeland - k.i.l.l.e.d. by a m.u.s.l.i.m. extremist thus far.
10:49 PM on 06/11/2009
These right wing extremists are terrorists and should be treated as such and labeled as such by the media. These people aren't just criminals, they are terrorists that seek to terrorize anyone who doesn't agree with their radical ideals. Terrorists, in the same exact form as Osama bin Laden and Timothy McVeigh.

Your use of Media Matters as a source for reliable information discredits you, as they fully admit to a partisan slant.

From their "About Us" page:

"Media Matters for America is a Web-based, not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) progressive research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media."

Acknowledging that you are progressive and acting as a watchdog over conservatives...

Would you accept it if I brought you a source that said it was "a Conservative research center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting progressive misinformation in the US media??"

I though not...

Yep! To your way of thinking, it would. The problem is so much is on tape and available now on many outlets, Media Matters is but one source. One can have an insanely funny Saturday night at the movies just watching Republicans trip all over themselves. Then there are the horror movie clips - Hannity, O'Reilly, Rush, Bachmann, Beck et al. 'Course I have to take those with a grain of salt - their "comments" are worse than any horror movie I have ever seen.

Media Matters is an entirely fact based website, devoted to exposing falsehoods and distortions in mainstream media content. Happens to be, their mission as "progressives," makes them de facto Democrats, these days... but that doesn't change how their site works: everything there is carefully reasoned fact-based analysis. They're never sneaky, or dishonest, or attempt to present opinion as fact, as your idea that they have a "partisan slant," would seem to imply. Just because you "take sides" doesn't mean you're a political hack, or a liar, or untrustworthy. Media Matters, in fact, is all about looking directly at the difference between fact and opinion, and exposing those disingenuous public voices, that confuse public issues, by confusing opinion with fact.

It frightens me, that an obvious and big part of the problem, with trying to talk to folks on "your side," is that a lot of you don't clearly understand the difference between fact and opinion, between partisanship and nonpartisan criticism, between accurate attacks and nasty baseless insinuations. I guess we need to start teaching some kind of basic multimedia analysis & interpretation course, in high school... maybe grade school.

One of the problems in dealing with people like you... Criminals, is they deny their crimes.

As I profile them psychologically, I have found out that they match up with known psych profiles of serial torture pedo-philes and the like...
