Napolitano

Recent incidents of extremist violence claiming the lives of abortion provider George Tiller and a security guard at the Holocaust Museum have prompted calls for the Department of Homeland Security to accelerate the release of an updated report on right-wing extremism.

Amid howls that it had politicized national security, DHS stepped back from a mid-April report it had issued on domestic threats from fringe right-wing groups. "The report is no longer out there," Secretary Janet Napolitano told lawmakers, promising to have the report "replaced or redone in a much more useful and much more precise fashion."

Several weeks later, the findings of the original study have been proven prescient, specifically in its warnings about violent acts from anti-abortion zealots and anti-Semites. Now, demands for that follow-up have grown more urgent.

On Thursday, the judicial advocacy organization, People for the American Way, faxed a letter to Napolitano calling on the Department of Homeland Security Chief to "expedite the approval of the 'Rightwing Extremism' report and release a final version as soon as possible."

"Although the [original] report was withdrawn with the intent of being rewritten, the events of the last two weeks show that its core findings are fundamentally correct: 'The economic downturn and the election of the first African-American president present unique drivers for rightwing radicalization and recruitment.' The Department of Homeland Security is charged with protecting the security of all Americans, and it is essential for the American public to have the unvarnished truth about the rise of dangerous extremism in this country," read the letter from PFAW President Michael Keegan.

"I urge you to expedite the approval of the "Rightwing Extremism" report and release a final version as soon as possible," Keegan added. "Moreover, the report should offer the best available assessment of possible threats from far-right groups and individuals, no matter how politically inconvenient the findings might be to some groups. If the report can not be released immediately, please announce publicly the current status of the report and when you expect it to be published."

A researcher on right-wing organizations noted that the security onus was on DHS to act fast. "The threat of right-wing violence is only increasing," said the source, "and Americans could be put at risk if DHS takes too long to issue a new report or waters the old one down."

Indeed, in the wake of the shooting of a Holocaust Museum security guard by white supremacist James Von Brunn, the original DHS report is getting a more favorable review. Even some critics of the study, who claimed that it compared conservatives and returning veterans to domestic terrorists, acknowledged that their initial reactions may have been hasty and overblown. That said -- and this is important -- the report was never formally pulled, according to a DHS official. Despite reports otherwise, the department, this official said "never retracted the original report." It was, as Napolitano noted in her testimony, "taken off of the intel Web sites." As the official said, DHS "very publicly acknowledged it had flaws."

But, that official added, "We stood by the underlying intel... it was never pulled back from the entities who received it in the first place."

Don't any of you have any questions about WHY so many veterans do not trust the government?
I guess it's okay that they fight and die in Obama's wars (he hasn't tried at all to stop them has he?) but god forbid they have the nerve to come back and believe that they were fighting for the Constitution and their liberties.
Yes, people who believe in the Constitution are suspects now. My god we should outlaw civics classes, were just raising new little "right wingers"!

See? SEE?

Look who's making statements that include the ugliest of personal accusations, that involve crime and violence. LOOK! Who is it? Which side does this voice come from, snarling with a nastiness that nice normal people don't feel easily, and wouldn't readily expose in public?

It's a Republican. A "right winger." It almost always is.

The Right-Wing Extremist groups have been a problem for many years, especially the Ayrian groups, although there are other groups, including the far right Anti-Abortion groups, and we can't forget about all the gangs. I heard an exerpt on a book yesterday that stated there are as many as 900 Ayrian groups with about 30,000 members currently in the U.S. There have been many reports, books, investigations, etc. They just didn't get much play by the media so it may come as a surprise and people who have been busy working and raising children may find it hard to believe, but if you looked elsewhere you would know these scary individuals have been lurking and working for a long time. I bet the libraries have a lot of material on them.
It certainly does no good to hide your head in the sand about them, because they are out there and usually well-armed.

Sadly, the headline should read "

"DHS Urged To Expedite Updated Report On Violent Extremism"

The Obama administration told us they were going to work to "End the divisiveness," yet they have purposely manipulated the media in an effort to marginalize certain media personalities. Now they (through the DHS) are going to once again marginalize a percentage of Americans by labeling them with an affiliation to violent extremists, simply because they are Conservative thinkers, and therefore "right wing" in the political spectrum.

Most all in the "right wing,"of American politics, just like most all from the "left wing," do not agree at all with the actions of some radically hateful people.

We would all be better served if the political labels were removed from extreme acts, and those who commit those acts were simply punished for being the criminals or terrorists that they are.

FYI, I do know and accept that there are violent extrem-ists on both side of the polit!cal spectrum. It seems many on the far right have a tough time accepting this.

I know that report was initiated by the Bush admin.

That doesn't change the fact that - in my opinion - the "title" of it should be changed.

And I'd say across both sides, we all wish and hope that we never know or associate with anyone who would act in such a heinous manner.

But again - I'm not here to label the radical extremists as left or right - they're just sick and / or hateful people, or people who have been manipulated in ways we hope to never encounter.

Which is why they are referred to in the report as "Right wing Extremists," not just as conservatives.

The key word here is extremist. That shouldn't bother you at all -- there are extremists of all stripes. You should be as quick to call these people terrorists as you were Bill Ayers.

What is telling to me is that conservatism can't bring itself to really look in the mirror -- really be honest that as they have collectively moved farther to the right, it has given latitude to a larger fringe element to get dangerous. That's a fact, and they are a fringe element, but an element nonetheless. They are a part of the whole. Be honest about it, excise it, and conservatism will emerge healthier and possibly even return to the table as a contributing ideology that betters the middle class, rather than an obstructionist corporate-owned supporter of oligarchy.

Your time, your call. What will your movement be?

DHS released a report on left wing extremists at the same time they initially released the one on right wing extremists. Odd how no one made a fuss about that

here it is:
http://theplumline.whorunsgov.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/hsa-leftwing-extremists-increase-in-cyber-attacks-dated-26-january-2009.pdf

Note that the report on left wing extremists focuses on targets that are economic in nature: property crimes, vandalism, cyber attacks - ie types of crimes where noone dies.
Not so for right wing extremists - their intent is to cause physical violence against people.

The Democrats MUST quit apologizing to the Republicansor trying so hard to get along with them.. They consider it a sign of weakness to apologize. They just don't understand the concept.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:04 PM on 06/11/2009

I agree, the article mentioned that an aid at DHS stated that they stand by the previous report. How can you stand by a report that you apologized for? That was a big mistake. I am not sure that DHS takes domestic terrorism as serious as they should. I think they would serve the country well by naming these group as terrorist organization so that the public could be on guard for any attacks by these groups. It would also make people more apt to report things they here or see.

I agree also - it was a mistake to apologize for the report - especially in the light of the three killings in the past weeks. One can always hope when the wingnuts see the updated report they will keep their mouths shut. 'Course wingnuts are not known for their intelligence. They are but spouting receptacles for what comes out of the likes of Limbaugh et al.

The Republicans aren't coping very well with returning to the land of civil discourse and honest objectives. Like mental patients who've temporarily lost their way they require structure and sure-footedness, not apologies. Now that their guy, Bush sold them out and they didn't get Armageddon, they seem to feel they need to take things into their own hands.
Face it, the closest we've come to fascism was the 8 years of BushCO. And the unitary executive powers are still in place. It's VERY hard to clawback power once we let this thing get this far because of fear. And that's all it gets down to... FEAR.
We better grow up fast. and realize nothing is ever gonna be "perfect" but we can make it better. We better give up the idea that we control anything and work together so this society starts working again and nut..jobs at ALL LEVELS don't get floor time anymore.

This is a very threatening trend here we're seeing develop in America.

Prayer Warrior Pastor Drake prays for Obama's death

MEDIA ADVISORY, Aug. 14 /Christian Newswire/ -- In light of the recent attack from the enemies of God I ask the children of God to go into action with Imprecatory Prayer. Especially against Americans United for Separation of Church and State. I made an attempt to go to them via Matt 18:15 but they refused to talk to me. Specifically target Joe Conn or Jeremy Learing. They are those who lead the attack. (You can see their press release attack at www.au.org )

In the interview on Fox Radio Wiley Drake says that he is praying for President's Obama death. Visit this web site, or click the link below and hear for yourself.

That interview is tragically scary, and that person should be condemned and certainly on a watchlist.

However - to equate that line of thinking to the reporting done on Fox News (TV or radio) is intellectually dishonest.

The hosts on Fox News have - on too many occasions to count - spoken out against actions of violence, and would never condone actions such as that man "prays for." In fact, every host of a late afternoon or prime time show on Fox News Channel has boldly condemned the murder of Dr. Tiller, calling it an act of anarchy which must be held in contempt.

Furthermore, you are displaying your disdain for Fox News (radio) by citing a radio interview conducted by Alan Colmes - a man who set forward in that interview with the sole purpose of exposing the "pastor" for the hateful bigot he is.

Von Brunn and Scott Roeder consider themselves to be "sovereign citizens"

The "sovereign citizen" movement is a loosely organized collection of groups and individuals who have adopted a right-wing anarchist ideology originating in the theories of a group called the Posse Comitatus in the 1970s. Its adherents believe that virtually all existing government in the United States is illegitimate and they seek to "restore" an idealized, minimalist government that never actually existed. To this end, sovereign citizens wage war against the government and other forms of authority using "paper terrorism" harassment and intimidation tactics, and occasionally resorting to violence.

There seems to be a real division among "conservatives". I don't believe the traditional conservative would approve of hate-filled behaviors any more than I would.

But extremists are another matter. They are so filled with loathing that they give true conservatives a bad name.

No, because we know that there are left-wing extremists as well. The difference is left-wing extremists do not kill people. Their targets are symbols of what they deem as threatening, not innocent peolpe like the Holocaust Memorial Museum guard....and there could have been many more casulaties if the security guards had not been so well-trained and that one guard was willing to give his life to prevent some right-wing extremist whose only thought was to kill as many people as he could - OUR citizens! Actually, the "left-wing" report was released on January 29, 2009 - while the whole country was still in the process of Administration change.

Here's a link with the date on page 2 - http://theplumline.whorunsgov.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/hsa-leftwing-extremists-increase-in-cyber-attacks-dated-26-january-2009.pdf

The "right-wing" report was released April 7 - conveniently just one week before Tax Day and the "tea-party" movement.

Coincidence, I'm sure...

And the report was right on. There are left wing extremists. These ones, however, are not killing people.

But as I said, I know that my ideology, left wing, if taken too far, could lead to some fools thinking that violence is the answer. This will not invalidate my entire belief system. The right wing just does not want to except that fact for themselves.

These right wingers are so insecure they think that if a few kooks use violence under their banner, it somehow invalidates their entire belief system. Grow up wingers!

They trashed Napolitano when they first heard of this report. And their "offense" bought Von Brunn and Tiller's murderer a few extra weeks of less scrutiny.

So I'm wondering, did the GOP not consider these two to be "extremists" or "right wing"?

Well I might if they take away my cigarettes. I mean I am a peaceful man but when I do not have my cigarettes I turn into a menace.

You got it, I guarantee the White House will try and strip some of our rights over this. The die hard libs will welcome that, because they're sheep. This shooting unfortunately a gift for those politicians that want to continue Bush's consolidation of power and do away with our constitutional rights. And the media goes out of it's way to play that up, irresponsibly.

Now that sounds fun --- a '59 Les Paul into a Marshall stack for laying down some law. I like that.

Martial law, however, is what you're intending. And that's not nearly as ROCK.
