Jeff Lax and Justin Phillips put together a dataset using national opinion polls from 1994 through 2009 and analyzed several different opinion questions on gay rights. Here I'm going to talk about their estimates of state-by-state trends in support for gay marriage.

On the other hand, maybe people will wake up in time to realize that gender matters in childrearing, which is why society shouldn't support anything other than the male-female marriage commitment model. After holding income constant, boys in father-absent families were twice as likely as those in two-parent ones to go to jail and girls in father-absent families were twice as likely as those in married families to have an out-of-wedlock birth. What all of this means for the rest of society is evident on the evening news programs. Boys without married fathers populate our street gangs, and these gangs are responsible for an inordinately high level of violence. We rely on the police to control gangs, but the important, and often absent, control is that exercised by fathers. A boy growing up without a father has no personal conception of what it means to acquire skills, find a job, support a family, and be loyal to one's wife and children. Research on the link between unemployment rates and crime has shown that the connection is very weak. The connection between crime and father absence is much higher. Boys in single-parent families are also more likely to be idle rather than in school or unemployed and to drop out of high school. These differences are as great for white families as for black and Hispanic ones and as large for advantaged children as for disadvantaged ones.

John, you are telling stories, condemning gay parenting by omission and misdirection. As I pointed out to you before, the American Psychological Association has many peer reviewed studies that demonstrate same sex parents are just as capable of rearing children as heterosexual couples. When you bring up the problems of "father-absent families" you are really talking about single mother families, and deliberately leaving out two mother families. Children of two mother families are on average just as good or better in school and life outcomes as children of your "traditional families." You are deceptively implying that children of two lesbians are going to grow up just like children of single mothers, then become criminal gang members and damage our society, but your implication is contrary to scientific evidence.

To CaliforniaLove: "Far more important things on the agenda. Healthcare, the economy, and the two wars are but a few. Leave this in the closet where it belongs."

when heteros put their lives entirely into the closet, let me know. then we can have a disucssion. Two wars and the economy were started by people who are obsessed about homosexuality to the exclsuion of everything else. Talk to THEM first, and then get back to me.

How's this: pass gay marriage now in all 50 states. Then you can stop worrying about how the marriage of two people you don't know could possibly have the slightest effect on your life, and then we can get on to the matters that actually are important to the general population instead of the people who are so obsessed by gay people that they will make any argument and tell any lie, no mattrer how vicious or vile, just to make sure our lives are as difficult and unpleasant as possible...

...all so that they can express their disapproval-- or their alleged god's alleged disapproval-- of something that is none of their business-- or the business of their alleged god.

Marriage is a fundamental human institution, a fundamental right of human beings. It is not a state by state privilege of some kind. The Fourteenth Amendment makes it clear that if it is extended to anyone, it must be extended to all.

Yes, I realize that there are at least four and potentially five Supreme Court justices whose ideology is so warped and ingrained that they are likely to deny this in a ruling, so this is maybe the only way to go.

But still, it proves we are NOT a nation of laws and ideals and principles. We are held hostage by the ideologies of some not very good people.

I'm so dam sick of people ranting about what they believe or what they don't believe. It's not about our beliefs or feelings. It's not about a referendum. It's not about you. It's about the constitution and the rights afforded to us by the constitution. It's based on the premise of freedom, except when you infringe on another person's life, liberty, or pursuit of happiness. Gay marriage must be legal or who knows, some day they might swoop in and take rights away from me by referendum because something I do might be unpopular.

For heavenly sakes, the Republicans are such hypocrites! The Republicans scream for less government, smaller government. Until, that is, it comes to the private lives of individuals. Then, OH! my heavens, the more government, the bigger government, the better. Republicans have no business in the private lives of individuals who are gay. The Republicans have no business lives of women who cherish their right to choose.

I would hope that OUR Gov't will be treating ALL Americans Equally way before mid century.....why even bother saying "LIBERTY & JUSTICE FOR ALL" if its not True?? Why say that's what America stands for..when it clearly does NOT?? Im 48 and would like to see Marriage Equality in my lifetime.

At this rate, Texas is going to have marriage equality in 2058. Hopefully before then, a non-homophobic non-bigoted Supreme Court will rule that all consenting adults have the right to marry whoever they want. Which will most likely happen in 2057. I can hardly wait.

By that time the Catholics south of the border will have completed their invasion and Texas will officially be part of Mexico. I would probably add another 100 years before marriage equality gets to Texas.

So when will the bible thumpers get to the real threat on the sanctity of marriage

Luke 16:18
Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery. (So Says Jesus)

Lev 20:10
And the man that committeth adultery with [another] man's wife, [even he] that committeth adultery with his neighbor's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.

There is no such thing as same sex marriage. It doesn't exist, it's simply a non-entity. If they want to draw up some legal papers to get themselves insured or otrherwise living like a family, then they should do that but they'll never be "married" not gonna happen.

My partner and I have a legal marriage certificate from California that says that you're a liar. The best part is that there isn't a damn thing you can do about it. It's kind of sad that you don't want everyone to have the same rights that you take for granted. Sounds a bit selfish if you ask me.

But then what about the gay/lesbian couple in CT, MA, VT, NH, CA, IA, ME that have been "married"?They have a legal marriage recognized by the state. Sounds like it happened. Maybe you missed the memo.

Yeah that's it, I missed the memo. Now you're getting all the attention you seem to require to justify your choices. I hope at a minimum you're happy. FYI reading these comments to who likes who and who marries who is something like a cheap novel. All drama and little substance. Actually I really don't care what others do as long as it doesn't hurt someone else. If your enjoying the company of your "partner" then that's great.

I've said this before over other of the "classic" right wing objects of outrage. There is an almost irrational, unreal aspect to their opposition to gay marriage. Their arguments make no sence. I think in reality they hate their own lives and hate themselves so much that they're filled with an undefined rage and need to channel it somewhere. Listen to any rabidly right wing pro-lifers or homophobes. They're rage goes far beyond abortion or gay rights. Its irrational.

Gay marriage is unstoppable. There will be roadblocks along the way, but its going to be the law of the land. There will be some hold out staes (the usual suspects) then it will be written into federal law.

The exclusive cause of homosexuality is heterosexuality. Right wing, Christian parents should have a back up plan when one of their children tells them that he/she is gay. Otherwise, the parents will be left to blame themselves for their child's sexual orientation.

If history is any indicator, gay marriage will eventually be the law of the land and opposition looked back on as shortsighted. Every civil liberties battle has had to deal with the entrenched conservatives declaring "over my dead body, society will collapse if this happens." In previous generations, they said no to the emancipation of slaves, they said no to women's suffrage, they said no to interracial marriage. They may hold off the waves for a while, but ultimately lose to the tide.

I used to work at a university archive. I photocopied a pamphlet from the early 1900's on why women shouldn't vote, full of biblical references. The tone and arguments seemed indistinguishable from the racial anti-civil rights stuff of the 50s & 60s, and the religious right's modern day homophobia.
