Shades of General Curtis Lemay!
( Vietnam era crazy that almost started a nuclear war with Russia)
Didn't George C. Scott play this general in Dr Strangelove?

Yeah and Iraq had WMD's! As the little boy cried wolf...

Wasn't it John Kerry, Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, Joe Biden, and others saying that Iraq had WMDs. In other words pretty much every Democrat who was important at the beginning of this decade.

Yet 23 senators voted against the 'authorization of force' resolution, almost all of these 23 were democrats, if I remember correctly only one independent and one republican.

Kennedy, Boxer and many others were against. Politically motivated senators caved and made a scene like if they believe a possibility of WMD in Iraq, and I do believe that all of them - all of senators who voted for that resolution - should have been reelected by now, if we would have more progressive population (which we will of course have).

But your comment is not on topic. And of course North Korea is far more credible threat than Iraq ever was.

Who can blame them? Remember the old adage: My enemy's enemy is my friend.

You don't need to blame them, we just need to marginalize and isolate them.

Yeah, that strategy has worked so well for the US with North Korea so far. Almost as good as with Cuba! I suppose we could have saved some face if we'd actually honored our terms of the bargain with North Korea. I don't expect Kim Jong Ill ever intended to, but if the US and its allies don't either than the blame doesn't fall squarely on them, does it?

Fact
(1) Brother Saddam didn't have a bomb. We invaded and removed him.
(2) Brother Kim does. We did not..

Lesson:
(1) If you fear the USA, build yourself a bomb

Another fear mongering article directed against Iran. Who is feeding HP these articles, and for why are they uncritically accepted?

Phyisician, heal thyself. If you ever bother to cite anything at all, it's either one clipped down Faux News style sound bite from a larger piece, or it turns out to be a right-wing Islamophobia clearinghouse blog.

These comments come from the head of the Pentagon's Missile Defense Agency! Does anybody else think he might be saying that just to protect his own massive budget and the truckload of lobbyist money he bound to make on the backside! Mark my word Army Lieutenant General Patrick O'Reilly will be retiring in a few years to become another ex General "working" for Boeing or Raytheon.

At what point does Obama say, "Enough N. Korea!" and actually do something? Rather than make un-intimidating demands of them.

My guess is never.

The song comes to mind...
"It's the end of the world as we know it,
it's the end of the world as we know it,
and I feel fine."

Should change the last line, though.

Nuclear weapons are over estimated, It won't be the end of the world if they were used, The U.S. took out two Japanese citys no problems. If Iran or North Korea ever used nuclear weapons they would never know what hit them. Stop the fear mongering.

I wouldn't call the extreme suffering of the CIVILIAN population of Hiroshima and Nagasaki "no problems." Not to mention three generations of much higher incidence of cancer. Nuclear weapons are rightly feared. Which is why they are the only DEFENSIVE option for countries threatened by the US.

I partly agree with you - I think we probably could deter Iran and North Korea.

That being said, we really don't want nuclear weapons to ever be used again. When I was in SAC I had to study the effects of nuclear weapons. You really don't want to go there.

Nuclear warheads nowadays are a lot different from the ones during world war II. We now have plutonium bombs, more and bigger warheads and can do a lot more damage. There are "dirty bombs" which carry a lot of radiation. It's the radiation that does the most terrible damage, leaving the ground unusable for 20 years. Alaska has a lot to be concerned about, and they are concerned. Hiding your head in the sand won't solve those concerns. Unlike the Ostrich you can't afford to hope that your enemy won't see you. If Iran or North Korea ever used Nuclear weapons we would know what hit us. We have the patriot anti-missile missiles but some of the scuds got through. Yes, we would retaliate, and little would be left usable in those countries. But with the newer bombs we could set off a nuclear winter. Our newer bombs have several warheads per bomb. That means several places can be bombed with one bomb. They are "Smart" bombs. Love, Peace and Wisdom.

Good post (though a plutonium bomb is not a new thing at all).

Let me add also that a few countries have also H-bombs, which can be hundreds time more powerful and limited just by necessity to be delivered by missiles. The RAND studies on nuclear winter for so long was not an abstract subject. Minimal retaliation to a rogue country is one thing, but who knows what can be set off next: say, Russia and China would not like getting all of a sudden lots of radiation from our (most probably not proportional) response to North Korea.
