Obama

Speaking at a town hall in Green Bay Wisconsin, President Barack Obama addressed head on what is the hot debate of the day: whether a health reform overhaul should include a public option for health insurance.

"I also strongly believe that one of the options in the exchange should be a public insurance option," Obama declared, in what was one of his most forceful statements of support since the health care debate began. "And the reason is not because we want a government takeover of health care. I've already said, if you've got a private plan that works for you, that's great. But we want some competition. If the private insurance companies have to compete with a public option, it will keep them honest and it will help keep their prices down."

The remarks came just several hours after the American Medical Association said it would oppose a public option for coverage. But in a reflection of just how delicate this debate has become, the 250,000 member physician group largely backtracked from its opposition later in the day.

"Make no mistake: health reform that covers the uninsured is AMA's top priority this year," a clarifying statement from the group read. "Every American deserves affordable, high-quality health care coverage.

"Today's New York Times story creates a false impression about the AMA's position on a public plan option in health care reform legislation. The AMA opposes any public plan that forces physicians to participate, expands the fiscally-challenged Medicare program or pays Medicare rates, but the AMA is willing to consider other variations of the public plan that are currently under discussion in Congress. This includes a federally chartered co-op health plan or a level playing field option for all plans. The AMA is working to achieve meaningful health reform this year and is ready to stand behind legislation that includes coverage options that work for patients and physicians."

While not directly addressing AMA's position on the public plan, the president did offer what seemed to be a subtle dig at the group's seemingly conflicting objectives. AMA's mission has been health care coverage for all, but it has also opposed every major attempt at a systematic overhaul since the FDR administration.

"Doctors didn't get into the medical profession to be bean counters or paper pushers," Obama said in his early remarks, underscoring the bureaucratic problems that exists in the status quo. "They are not interested in spending all their time acting like lawyers or business executives."

Later in the question and answer session, Obama directly addressed the political component of the debate over the public option, gently calling out critiques for misrepresenting the plan's objectives.

"Now, how this debate is evolving in Washington, unfortunately sometimes kinds of falls into the usual politics, right?" the President said. "So, what you've heard is some folks on the other side saying, I'm opposed to a public option because that's going to lead to government running your health care system. Now, I don't know how clearly I can say this, but let me try to repeat it. If you've got health insurance that you're happy with through the private sector, then we're not going to force you to do anything. All we're saying is for the 46 million people who don't have health insurance or for people who have got health insurance like you... let's change some of those incentives so that we get more people getting prevention, more people getting health care to keep them healthy as opposed to just treating them when they get sick. And I think that we can come up with a sensible, commonsense way that's not disruptive, that still has room for insurance companies and the private sector, but that does not put people in the position where they are potentially bankrupt every time they get sick."

The ability of the president to elevate himself above the usual political scrum proved monumentally valuable during the course of the campaign. His appearance at Green Bay on Thursday suggests that the Obama White House thinks it can apply this formula to the health care reform debate. The friendlier turf, they believe, is outside Washington.

For all of the RePugZ's and insurance companies arguments about the inefficiency of the government as health care providers, they sure are scared of the competition.

Obama says that borrowing to pay for healthcare is OK! So, you see, there is nothing to worry about. Once sound political principles guide our actions, the economics will fall into place. From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.

it is not 60% when you have 300 million people paying for the same health care ..costs will be lowered .....we will be actually paying less in taxes than we do now.....because medicate and Medicare cant keep up with the soaring prices....the main objective of a single payer health care system ..IS TO KEEP COSTS DOWN ...geez

As long as our health is a "profit center" and as long as the business model for health care is a pay-per-service situation, we will never see real health care reform in this country.

I'm amazed by the number of people on many of these health care threads who worry endlessly about the profitability, competitiveness and welfare of the current health care system. It's devouring our wealth at an alarming rate. Yet, there are many of you out there who still believe private business is more "efficient or noble" than the public sector. The health insurance industry is itself proof that this is wrong.

I thought we Americans were all about innovation and "thinking outside the box." I guess this only applies when those at the top are winning. I suppose the rest of us just get to go to the emergency room!

there is a myth that says "private health insurance provides better health care"... this is NOT true .the goal of private health insurance is to profit ...and to profit you MUST CUT COST ..cutting cost means a lower health care service or insufficient health care for the average person ..of course if you are well off you needn't worry about cost

because our health care system is profit driven.. we find ourselves paying more on things that have nothing to do with health care for example :- "sales and marketing" departments and a huge executive compensation (bonus)

plus because premium payment are so high most people cant afford health care coverage and because of this 15% of the population uninsured....so we have an expensive and inadequate system that doesn't cover everybody ....

Profit is OK when you are selling oranges, chairs, lamps, but when you are dealing with the health of the people, profit is immoral. This is the best argument for getting rid of the profiteers, I think other countries understand the moral imperative of providing Health Care for the people.

if we allow health care to continue to be for profit like we are doing now ...we will be bankrupt ...in just 20 years ..its not just the MORAL thing to do its the SMART way to go...

health care is a right not a privilege ....

News flash!

Socialized health CARE isn't even on the radar screen. If you think that's what Obama or the Dems are talking about here, you're badly mistaken, and have been seriously misled by them.

They're talking about leaving the entire for-profit health CARE system intact. 100% status quo.

On top of the status quo health CARE system, they're talking about shuffling the deck chair around on the Titanic by offering a public INSURANCE option.

Suggesting that this is actually reforming the health CARE system would be like Obama saying he was going to reform our energy system by offering a public debit card to pay for gas instead of using a credit card from those nasty, selfish for-profit banks. But no matter how you pay for it, you're still putting gasoline made from Iranian and Venezuelan oil into your car.

the public insurance option that is open FOR EVERYBODY is much more better than socialized medicine ...we don't want a socialized health care system we just want to replace the private insurance with a public health insurance..this will achieve 2 things

1- keep costs down ..and prevent the ridiculous rise in health care costs
2-everybody will be covered ..and everyone will have his premium lowered

its a win win ...japan is using the same system .its been done before these are not uncharted waters....

the Senate finance committee's hearings on health reform did NOT include testimony from any advocate for single-payer insurance .the reason SPH is being blocked is because of the insurance companies lobby ....its all about money ....the senate is bought by the private insurance companies

WE MUST HELP THE PRESIDENT ...we must push for a public insurance option

This is exactly why we need a universal healthcare approach to providing medical care in the U.S.

We're failing miserably and are so much more capable than this!

the government raises the money by creating a pool that everyone contributes to ..this means it doesn't matter if your healthy or s! ck ,young or old rich or poor we all contribute ...a policy should be made to determine how much we each pay

there will be no monopoly the patient will be able to choose his doctor and hospital ..etc so there will be no monopoly on the health care the private practice will remain

THE GOVERNMENT WILL NOT RUN THE HEALTH CARE INDUSTRY .....we are only replacing the private health insurance with a public health insurance....this is NOT socialized medicine...

We must take capitalism completely out of the healthcare equation, so that there is not any profit incentive in medicine whatsoever. Only then can we build a system that will service the needs of the people.

right now we are spending 15% GDP on health Services we will be spending $8.1 trillion and it will be 25.4% of GDP. In 20 years...
this means if we don't make some significant reforms ...health care will bankrupt the entire country .plus 47 million people are uninsured ..a single payer health care system will keep costs under control because When all patients are under one system, the payer will have the biggest power..this will NOT create a monopoly of the service but it will create a monopoly on the buying power ...thus forcing cost to remain reasonably under control ...and when you buy into a pool of 300 million people your premiums will be lower ....

IF killing 18,000 plus (2001 figures which have to be worse today) Americans a year for corporate profits isn't a good enough reason to switch to universal single payer health insurance then yeah, what he said!
