CNN:

Former President George H.W. Bush stood up for his former judicial nominee Sonia Sotomayor Friday, telling CNN Anchor Robin Meade that GOP critics who called President Obama's Supreme Court pick a racist were off-base, and unfair.

"I don't know her that well but I think she's had a distinguished record on the bench and she should be entitled to fair hearings. Not - [it's] like the senator John Cornyn said it," he told CNN. "He may vote for it, he may not. But he's been backing away from these...backing off from those radical statements to describe her, to attribute things to her that may or may not be true.

I must say, great job GOP. YOU just locked The 2012 for THE DEMS & Obama. Don't look for Latinos, DON NOT EVEN TRY.

John Cornyn didn't back off those statements out of the kindness of his heart. His district is heavily Hispanic. If he held office in any other region, he'd be howling racist platitudes, too. He's not fooling anyone, he's just covering his behind.

Hey H.W., your words mean nothing to the people who run your party now. A relative of yours and his buddies have given the reigns to people who are a bunch of criminals. Your words are moot.

Too bad your son and his posse of Nixon era crooks didn't ever bother to listen to you.

Good for you Mr President. You're in good company.

The GOP needs to again become the party of common sense, instead of senseless attacks if it wants to be a viable voice in the future of American politics.

George, tell your 'piglican friends they're being unfair and short-sighted. I doubt they'll listen, but maybe you can stop your party from taking that sharp right-hand turn off a cliff.

Is it too late to give George Sr. a second term and take away one of Junior's stolen terms?

2x0 is still zero
He'd just go back to selling arms to Iran to finance
right-wing corporate death squads in Latin America.

Cut dad some slack Okieborn, he must feel dreadful to know he raised a son to be everything counter to what he represented in life. George senior may not be my favorite President but he had a distinguished record of serving his country in many posts, many of them with distinction. That his son turned out to be such a Disaster is not his fault and we do not need to embarrass a father of his age by rubbing his sons failings in his face.

Now if you would like to bash Georgie boy directly I am always game to pile on.

Paulo, I agree with you AND Okie. True, he did some honorable things. But read "Bush on the Couch" - he's hardly dad of the year.

I've said it before, the modern-day 'funhouse mirror' distorted incarnation of the Repub party would be anathema to traditional conservatives. I still recall Bush Sr. breaking down and sobbing at an event several years ago.

I've never been a big fan of Bush Sr. but he was not the worst president we ever had (his son is in the running for that).
The fact that Bush Sr. is coming out on this shows you the split in the GOP; he rarely speaks openly on issues anymore. Of course since the GOP is attacking her in this manner, it has become a legacy issue for Bush Sr. as he initially appointed her to a federal judicial position.

In relation to the Sotomayor nomination, I have the following links of interest:

bush sr and bush jr have both been pleasing ex presidents, all you have to do to be a good ex president is some basic decency, manners and politeness, they both have that pity neither had the talent to be good presidents, bush sr couldnt run a campaign so when he became president he was held hostage by the stupid promises he made which cost him his relection, while bush jr could run a campaign but things started falling apart as soon as he won, but on the other hand i do hope the remainder of their ex presidency's are as good as theyve been to date
