DETROIT — Slide over Super Mario and make room on the Stanley Cup for a new batch of Pittsburgh Penguins. Max Talbot scored two second-period goals, and the Penguins overcame the loss of captain Sidney Crosby to beat the defending champion Detroit Red Wings 2-1 on Friday night in Game 7 and win the Stanley Cup.

Instead of the Red Wings becoming the NHL's first repeat champion since winning titles in 1997 and 1998, this turned into a Penguins party. The last time Pittsburgh won the Cup, in 1991 and '92, it was captained by owner Mario Lemieux.

Marc-Andre Fleury was stellar in making 23 saves _ none bigger than the one he made with one second left as he dived across the crease and knocked away a shot by Niklas Lidstrom.

"I knew there wasn't much time left," Fleury said. "The rebound was wide. I just decided to get my body out there and it hit me in the ribs so it was good."

He erased the memories of a 5-0 loss in Game 5 at Joe Louis Arena that put the Penguins on the brink of elimination. Pittsburgh returned home and gutted out a 2-1 win, behind Fleury's 25 saves, on Tuesday that forced a seventh game in Detroit.

This was Pittsburgh's second championship in four months, following the Steelers' Super Bowl victory in February.

Fleury's last save started a wild scene in the crease that culminated in the awarding of the Cup. Crosby took it from NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and skated a half lap to center ice before handing it off to Bill Guerin, who joined the team at the trade deadline and became a champion for the first time since 1995 with New Jersey.

Lemieux, the No. 1 pick in the 1984 draft by Pittsburgh, celebrated on the ice with Crosby _ the phenom who has been living in the owner's house since joining the team.

The Penguins turned the tables on the Red Wings and captured the Cup on enemy ice, just as Detroit did in Pittsburgh last year. The Penguins are the first to win the title the year after losing in the finals since Edmonton did it 25 years against the New York Islanders _ the last finals rematch before this one.

Evgeni Malkin, who led the playoffs with 36 points, earned the Conn Smythe Trophy as the postseason MVP. He assisted on Talbot's first goal.

Crosby, just four years after being the No. 1 selection in the draft, became the youngest captain of a champion at 21 years old. He played just one shift after leaving the ice during the second period after taking a hard hit along the boards from Johan Franzen.

"It's unbelievable. It's the stuff you dream of as a kid. It's reality now," Crosby said. "We worked so hard. It's amazing to see how far we've come, and couldn't feel any better."

Jonathan Ericsson made it tense when he cut the Red Wings' deficit to 2-1 with 6:07 remaining. His shot from inside the blue line sailed past Fleury's glove and sent the fans into a frenzy.

Niklas Kronwall nearly tied it with 2:14 left, but his drive smacked the crossbar flush and caromed out of danger. The Red Wings pressed further in the Penguins end after goalie Chris Osgood was pulled, but the puck ended up behind the net as time ran out.

Pittsburgh had gone 1-5 in Detroit in the past two final series before pulling this one out at the most clutch time. The Penguins' only other victory at "The Joe" was a triple overtime win in Game 5 last year that kept them alive. Talbot made it possible by scoring the tying goal with 35 seconds left in regulation.

The Penguins are the first team since the 2004 Tampa Bay Lightning to win the Cup after trailing the series 3-2 and the first to take Game 7 on the road after the home team won the first six games since the 1971 Montreal Canadiens beat Chicago.

Crosby crumpled against the boards after he was hit and seemed to get his left leg caught. He glided to the bench hunched over and stayed bent at the waist as he was guided to the dressing room 5 1/2 minutes into the period.

He was limited to two shifts, totaling 2 minutes, 39 seconds of ice time in the frame, but his teammates doubled the lead while he was gone. Crosby made it back to the ice midway through the third period for the one shift.

"I just wanted them to keep doing what they were doing," Crosby said of what he told his teammates before the third period. "We did a pretty good job of keeping things away from (Fleury) and he was doing a good job of making saves when he needed to."

Uncharacteristic mistakes by the experience-laden Red Wings led to both Pittsburgh goals.

Malkin, the NHL's leading scorer in the regular season and the playoffs, forced defenseman Brad Stuart into making a bad pass from the right corner. Talbot intercepted the puck and fired it between Osgood's pads at 1:13.

The rest of the Penguins stood tall after Crosby left the ice, and Talbot turned a 2-on-1 into a two-goal lead.

"Max came up with some big goals there," Crosby said. "We just wanted to play the same way. It's not easy watching, especially this time of year."

Stuart pinched at the right point of the Penguins zone, and Chris Kunitz beat Jiri Hudler to a loose puck. Kunitz swept it out and onto the stick of Talbot, who raced up ice with Tyler Kennedy and only Kronwall back for Detroit.

Talbot snapped a wrist shot from the middle of the left circle that sneaked in under the crossbar to make it 2-0 at 10:07.

Fleury took care of the rest, looking more solid in the Detroit nets than ever before. He wasn't fazed by Red Wings crashing the net or screening him or any funky bounces off the end boards that tortured him in the earlier games of the series.

Rookie coach Dan Bylsma elected to keep his team home in Pittsburgh an extra day during the two-day break between Games 6 and 7, giving up a chance to practice in Detroit one more time.

The move paid off, and Bylsma became the second coach to win the Stanley Cup with a team he took over midseason. Bylsma helped rescue the Penguins from a near-playoff miss by leading them to a 18-3-4 mark after replacing Michel Therrien on Feb. 15.

Bylsma was on the losing side as a player in 2003 with Anaheim in the last series in which the home team won all seven games. The Mighty Ducks team that lost then was coached by current Red Wings bench boss Mike Babcock.

The Red Wings were the overwhelming favorite coming in with four players on the verge of their fifth Stanley Cup rings. Detroit had been 11-1 at home in the playoffs.

NOTES: Bylsma is the 14th rookie coach to win the Cup. ... Both teams stood at the benches and tapped their sticks on the boards when Muhammad Ali was shown on the video screen and introduced to the crowd during a first-period stoppage. ... The last road team to win Game 7 of the championship round in any major league was the 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates, who won the World Series in Baltimore.

I've been too busy celebrating to come here and leave a comment: Great job Maximus Superstar, Geno, Flower, The Kid, Free Candy, Tank, Sarge, and especially Disco Dan! Also, everybody else. Now, I hope we can keep Billy Guerin and Rob Scuderi at the very least. See you at the parade tomorrow, pending permission from my boss to take a long lunch. I'm sure she'll let me, this is Pittsburgh after all. City of Champions!

The Penguins win this year and the salary cap trouble they will have starting this summer might end the Wings dynasty.

Sidney Crosby is 21.
Evgeni Malkin is 22.
Jordan Staal is 20.
Marc-Andre Fleury is 24.
Max Talbot is 25.
Kris Letang is 22.
Brooks Orpik is an elderly 28.

This team will win a few more Cups and will compete for it every year for the next 8 to 10 years. By then, with the salary cap, it will be Sid, Geno, Fleury and a bunch of AHL'ers.

Has anyone asked "hockey mom" Palin for her opinion on this? "Hey Sarah, which hockey teams do you follow in Alaska?" "Oh, I follow all of 'em!" "Can you name one?" "You know, we do get hockey up here in Alaska. It's not like some foreign country doggone it!"

God I hate the Pens. Dirty dirty team. Almost as bad as the Ducks. And I love how every ref in the entire league is against the Wings, and so is the media.

MRL, you can hate the Pens - that's fine. But to call them dirty and blame the refs is silly. The Pens have talent. And their talent (Syd, Malkin, Fleury, et al) are all humble and likable guys. There are no Ovechkin (Osgood) showboats on the team.

As for the media bias, I can tell you that most people in Pittsburgh couldn't listen to the TV network announcers - they were so slanted for the Wings. But I reckon that bias is usually in the ear of the listener.

I have heard many people say that about the announcers here in Pittsburgh. This is just as silly as the Wings fans whining about the refs. The announcers were not biased...boring...not biased.

Mike Lange is the BEST in all of sports. Anything else, especially Steigerwald, is a big dropoff. Lange's call at the end of game 6 was the best....

"I'll meet you in the schoolyard, baby, for all the marbles."

It's true the refs HATED the Red Wings so much they overlooked the two penalty shots that should have been called when Zetterberg gloved the puck in the crease in consecutive games.

Sorry, the Wings had a good team and a good run. It's over now.

The era of Sid, Geno and the Pittsburgh Penguins has arrived.

Between the Stanley Cup, the sixth Super Bowl championship, and the recent ranking by The Economist as the most livable city in the U.S., Pittsburgh is off to a fine start for 2009.

Our next job is to ace the G-20 Summit.

Y'inz got that right.

What a game last night...one for the ages. It was pure bedlam down on the South Side last night. Riot cops, dogs, 40,000 euphoric (law abiding...for the most part) drunkards. This is indeed a great town.

I've lived all over tarnation. There is no place like Pittsburgh - culturally, geographically, spiritually. It's not just the sports culture. It's about pride in the place you live and the connection people have to this great town. It's about the history, the rivers, the neighborhoods and the frenchfries on the sandwiches. It's a spirit of resiliance that that is ingrained in the people. It's about the hills and crooked roads and a crooked dialect. It's a great place to call home. Go Bucs!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:58 AM on 06/13/2009

Thanks, Hayduke. I couldn't have said it better. I have lived all over tarnation, too. I moved to Pittsburgh 25 years ago to start grad school and over time, I fell in love with the city. It's now my home forever, for all the reasons you expressed so eloquently. I fell in love with the fighting spirit of the people, the resilience and pride, the way Pittsburghers keep going long after more self-indulgent folk have given up. I love how people here have actual skills -- they know how to build things and fix things. They have all kinds of practical experience in all kinds of areas that one generation passes to another. For me personally, living in a city that values every creative contribution we make to it and every problem we help to solve, means that if we're willing to roll up our sleeves, we're never anonymous, and never fungible. It's good to live in a city where you matter, and a joy to live in a city that you believe in.

HEY HOSSA: How's that Cup working for you in Detroit? (D**CHE!)

You know what? I, too, would have been sickened had Hossa won a Cup with Detroit. Especially since he added nothing to them in the playoffs. He was a barnacle.

BUT....if we had resigned Hossa, that would have meant NO Brooks Orpik, plus a few other guys like Guerin. I don't know that we win the Cup without Orpik. Defenseman who can hit AND skate as well as he can are limited to maybe a handful of guys in the league...Phaneuf, Kronwall, Pronger, etc.

I said when he signed in Detroit, Hossa is a great player, but a lousy prognosticator. A Wings repeat was possible, but if you look at history, not likely. He could have had a chance to win the Cup for the next 7 years in Pittsburgh. Oh well, he is the one who will have to live with that choice.

As a Pittsburgh Penguins fan, I say THANK YOU, Marian Hossa.

Did you see the interview where he actually said that had he signed with Pittsburgh they might not have won the Cup? From your perspective as Penguins fan yes, he did you a favor. It's like what would have happened in 2004 if A-Rod had come to the Red Sox instead of the Yankees ... the Red Sox would not have won the World Series that year.

I try to explain this to people all the time, and Hossa even mentioned it in his post-loss interview: the team he left and the team that won the cup are two different teams. I'll take Free Candy and a role player like Guerin any day over somebody who can only produce in the playoffs when he's being spoon-fed by Crosby.

As much as I hated to lose to the Red Wings last year...last years Penguins team on paper was probably better than this years...I didnt' want to have Bush in the White House when they won.

I don't understand what Evgeni Malkin has to do to be recognized as the top player in the game?

I love Sidney Crosby, no one works harder for all of their success than he does, but...

Malkin the top player in the world.

He won the playoff scoring title and MVP. He won the regular season scoring title. He was second in scoring last year in only his second year. From the start of 2008, he has been the best player period.

Ovechkin is an awesome player. But, honestly, outside of shooting and hitting, he doesn't even know where is own zone is and is a puckhog. He'll win the MVP though as it's hard to make a case for Malkin on such a deep team.

Actually, a lot of us think it's the greatest trophy in the world! A "pretty" trophy for a game as violent as hockey just wouldn't fit and the history of the Stanley Cup is just awesome. There are many hundreds of players who would give their right arm to have their names on the "ugly trophy!"

Really? I think the Stanley Cup is way better looking than the trophies for the other major North American sports.

The NBA trophy looks like a tacky 80's sculpture.
The World Series trophy looks like it should be an ornament sitting on a desk.
The Lombardi trophy is actually pretty cool, I must admit.

I think soccer's World Cup trophy is by far the best.

THE cup was bless with the blood, tears and just about every other bodily fluid of hockey players in the last century. It by far the hardest trophy to win in pro sports. The NHL playoff last two whole months a has to win 16 games that on top of an 80+ games season and they play an average of four games every week in the playoff.

In Football they get a week between games in Hockey they get a day and that if their no scheduling conflict if that the case they get the "pleasure" of playing two games in two nights! A playoff game last 60 regular minutes or whatever the time it take to score a goal in overtime and break a tie!

The Toronto Maple Leafs have not won the cup since 1967 and they still got one of the most fanatic fan base. Only surpassed by the religious fervor that inspire the Montreal Canadiens the Habs have not won the cup since 1993 that officially the longest cup drought in Montreal and Canada history. While Leafs fan are forgiving to the point of being pathetic Habs fans are going to nail Gainey to the Mont Royal Cross if he does not get RESULT SOON!

Hockey is serious business and THE Cup is the biggest symbol of Hockey excellence!

ANYBODY but the RedWings, Lakers, Yankee-Sox and Patriots. Haven't we heard their names too much the past few years? Got to give these teams props for their consistency in producing good crews, but its always nice to see new faces in the winners circle.

I agree in general, as I always cheer for the teams that haven't won before if my team isn't in it, but that is not the case here. I also always hope that the better team wins on their own accord. Again, sadly, not the case here (and very sadly, a common occurence in the NHL). It is essentially unheard of for a home team to lose game 7 in the final in the NHL, yet the best team in the league for the last 15 years, with more experience than any other, and more talent did. And they lost to a team where the biggest star was largely non-existent as a force in the series. This is typical in the NHL. The refs tend to even things up in playoff series. It is quite sickening, and probably crosses the line of legality since people bet on these games. Thus, a team has to TAKE IT if they want it. If they don't, they give a substandard group like this years Pens an opportunity. They should be congratulated for taking advantage of their opportunity, but not for winning, because frankly, they had WAY too much help on that front this year.

Agreed. As an Avs fan (I take it your a Wings person) I have to absolutely take my hat off to the Wings. They have put so many quality teams on the ice that it becomes a foregone conclusion to most other teams fans that the Wings will always be in the playoffs.

I fear the "draw factor", in a salary cap world, whereby aging stars, who've not handled the Cup, will gravitate towards a perennial contender like the Wings, and essentially play for below market value, in the hopes of hoisting the Cup. This is an advantage that other teams cant match, and is the darker side of salary caps in my mind.

I TOTALLY disagree with you. The Penguins, young as they are, OUTPLAYED the Wings -- a team that gets more than its share of breaks on home ice. What happened yesterday was there were next to no penalty calls, but the Penguins, this time, didn't fall for the sneaky playing of the Wings (and their drama queen ways when they're trying to foul the opposition) and lose their tempers, they just kept at them, and it unnevered the Wings.

The best time did win.

I do as you say, I root for the underdog if my team is not in it. I've been an avid fan since the early 60s when it was just a 6 team league. I am partial to West Coast teams, especially the Ducks and Sharks because there is just something about ice hockey and California that gets me. Maybe it's the incongruity
My view on the series this year, and I'm sure Red Wing fans will crucify me for this, is I think Osgood is overrated. It seems that when the wings win by a goal (say 2-1 or 3-2) the other goalie has faced twice as many shots as Osgood has. I know there is a stat called "save percentage" and Osgood does well there, but this stat is not reflective of the goalies work load.

Well, now I can emerge from my undisclosed secure location until next April when the best playoff tournament in any sport starts again.

Fantastic game last night! We were thrilled and you could have heard my partner yelling all the way from North GA to PA! (He's a born & raised Pittsburgher!) Crosby was genuinely touched by the win and Fleury really should have won MVP but Malkin was a great choice. In a seven game series, it's difficult at best to pick an MVP. I was particularly taken with Mario Limieux, as the co-owner of the Pens, being choked up. He gets his name on that trophy for the third time! Bravo, Pens!
