More than 38 million Americans planned to travel 50 miles or more on a recent three-day holiday weekend, and 84 percent planned to travel by car, according to AAA's annual survey. More planned to travel this year than last, even though the cost to travelers rose reaching a household average of nearly $600.

Don't be average. Play local.

Saving on travel is a good thing but I'd hate to see the travel industry collapse.
A million people depend on it. It's a difficult situation.

Mr. President, I heard about your directive that all cars and light trucks have a 35 mpg standard by 2016, and I have a question. I have a 7,000-pound boat and trailer that I haul. How is a truck with a small enough engine to meet these standards going to tow this much weight? Also, I have friends who are welders and mechanics. How will they carry their tools and equipment? - Daniel Grabowski, Sun Lakes AZ

Couldn't he just bulldoze the mansion and build a more eco friendly house similar to Bush's in Crawford.

The 4,000-square-foot house is a model of environmental rectitude.
Geothermal heat pumps located in a central closet circulate water through pipes buried 300 feet deep in the ground where the temperature is a constant 67 degrees; the water heats the house in the winter and cools it in the summer. Systems such as the one in this "eco-friendly" dwelling use about 25% of the electricity that traditional heating and cooling systems utilize.

A 25,000-gallon underground cistern collects rainwater gathered from roof runs; wastewater from sinks, toilets and showers goes into underground purifying tanks and is also funneled into the cistern. The water from the cistern is used to irrigate the landscaping surrounding the four-bedroom home. Plants and flowers native to the high prairie area blend the structure into the surrounding ecosystem.

Or you could just be like ALGORE and not give a crap.

Gore’s mansion, [20-room, eight-bathroom] located in the posh Belle Meade area of Nashville, consumes more electricity every month than the average American household uses in an entire year, according to the Nashville Electric Service (NES).

In his documentary, the former Vice President calls on Americans to conserve energy by reducing electricity consumption at home.

The average household in America consumes 10,656 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year, according to the Department of Energy. In 2006, Gore devoured nearly 221,000 kWh—more than 20 times the national average.

Last August alone, Gore burned through 22,619 kWh—guzzling more than twice the electricity in one month than an average American family uses in an entire year. As a result of his energy consumption, Gore’s average monthly electric bill topped $1,359.

Since the release of An Inconvenient Truth, Gore’s energy consumption has increased from an average of 16,200 kWh per month in 2005, to 18,400 kWh per month in 2006.

Gore’s extravagant energy use does not stop at his electric bill. Natural gas bills for Gore’s mansion and guest house averaged $1,080 per month last year.

this is pretty funny. You are a sneaky one Heuro, but your name should be Mentiroso, porque this is all lies. Nice touches though, making it all sound so legitimate by adding so much detail. Even giving us the (NES) as a sort of footnote, as if that's where you got the info. An uninformed reader might actually believe. Unfortunately if you're reading HP you're probably too informed already. I'm sure Fox has a blog, and many comrades who are more than willing to pull the wool over their eyes. Try there.

society, rather than feeling disenfrachised from and disowned by it. How about a picture of Oakland youth installing solar panels instead.

It is embodied by people like Majora Carter, who wanted to clean up her neighborhood and realized that waiting for someone else to care would be waiting in vain-hence, Sustainable South Bronx, and a revitalized community. It's pragmatic in this way, and not just some nice ideas to discuss. Nor is it born of ennui, but rather necessity. The necessity to stand up when you see injustice and do something about it.

Heather Fenney surveyed a 5 mile radius in South LA and found approximately 50 liquor store 20 fast-food joints, and 1 grocery store-in essence zero access to healthily produce--in essence the institutionalized racism of which i speak. Hence-Edible Schoolyards, organically raised and maintained by the people that will share in the bounty. A movement that doesn't give hand-outs, and by doing so objectify groups of people, but rather empowers people, which naturally builds esteem and the desire to keep pushing forward.

Katy Atkiss and Rootdown LA, Omar Freilla and the Green Worker Cooperative and on an on. Point is, this movement is for real and it's face has changed. No longer will the played-out stereotypes that plagued it during the 80's and 90's work-they no longer have any relevance. As a leader in progressive media, it is beneath you Huffpost, to engage in the propagation of such stereotypes.

About the picture: PLEASE PEOPLE can we get past the still-pervasive stereotype of the Green movement being embodied by ultimate-frisbee playing, tofu eating white people. This is not your mama's fringe movement anymore, nor is it sole property of those who are privileged enough to have the time to be concerned. Advertising it as such is doing the real movement of today a disservice in a number of ways, not the least of which is the fact that it reinforces this idea of exclusivity to many who might otherwise be receptive to the fact that it is they (mostly inner-city and rural poor) who continue to be the most hard-hit by environmental abuses and degradation.

Today's movement is the social movement of our generation, in part due to the fact that it seeks to address issues of civil rights and institutionalized racism, and while still just as passionate about trees and healthy food, it is concerned with matters of social equity and access, (i.e. healthy food, clean air, clean living environment) and social justice (i.e. job opportunities, the rights of individuals v. corporations).

It is growing under the leadership of individuals who see a problem, and seek to find a solution to it. People like Van Jones, who sought a solution to inner-city unemployment and subsequent crime and in doing so created Green-for-all as a means of training youth to play a part in the progression of

I was driving home from work one day and crested a hill that had a view that went on for miles. I realized suddenly that people from all over the world come to visit the area I live in. I went to the store and got a tourists guide to the region and it was thicker than some entire countries. So, yeah. I've been an avid staycationer ever since.
