The White House is playing hardball with Democrats who intend to vote against the supplemental war spending bill, threatening freshmen who oppose it that they won't get help with reelection and will be cut off from the White House, Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-Calif.) said Friday.

"We're not going to help you. You'll never hear from us again," Woolsey said the White House is telling freshmen. She wouldn't say who is issuing the threats, and the White House didn't immediately return a call. [UPDATE: White House spokesman Nick Shapiro says Woolsey's charge is not true.]

Woolsey said she herself had not been pressured because the White House and leadership know she's a firm no vote. But she had heard from other members about the White House pressure.

"Nancy's working with it. It's going to be a very close vote," Rep. Jack Murtha (D-Penn.), a close ally of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Friday. "We don't have any Republican leeway, so far we have no Republican going to vote for it."

"We'll pass it, but it'll be a close vote. Every vote will count," Murtha said.

Woolsey and Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) are both ardent opponents of the war and no friends of the IMF, which is in line for a $100 billion extension of credit in the same bill. Both pointed out that the Democratic leadership didn't bring the bill up for a vote on Friday, indicating they weren't confident they had the votes.

"It says something that this hasn't been brought up yet," Kucinich said. "I will tell you there's a good number of members holding solid. That's why this thing hasn't passed yet."

Kucinich said he's whipping the 51 Democrats who previously voted against the war funding and also whipping Democrats who have voted against the IMF in the past. He said that tremendous pressure was being exerted on the folks leaning against it.

"This is politics, you know, there's a lot of pressure put on members," he said. "But from what I can see, people are concerned that when they go back home, they're going to have to explain why they voted for the war if their constituency's opposed to it. People who have consistently opposed the war are going to have difficulty explaining why they switched."

"There are a lot of progressives who don't like the IMF," said Woolsey. Kucinich is making the case to colleagues that the IMF loan is merely a backdoor bailout of European banks.

Woolsey, co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, said she held a meeting earlier this week among Democrats opposing the package but is not actively whipping against it.

The GOP is also objecting to the inclusion of IMF money in the war bill. Kucinich recalled that the last time progressive Democrats joined with Republicans to defeat a Democratic agenda item came in 1999, when 26 Democrats sided with Republicans to block President Clinton's continuing bombing of Serbia.

"Republicans had their own agenda," recalled Kucinich.

The White House may be forced to drop the IMF provision and fight for it another day, but it's a top administration priority.

"That may happen," said Kucinich. "But as long as it's in there, it's a force that's moving in the direction of defeat of the bill."

UPDATE: The Netroots are pushing increasingly hard against the war bill and have compiled a whip count.

The HUGE elephant in the room problem here is that this HPost allows differing views, so we get numbskulls who spend their days listening to FOX & Limbaugh coming here, not to be informed, but to harrass & repeat Limbaugh talking points which they have no brains to understand in the first place. Try to have and get your differing view heard on Limbaugh radio or on FOX. You would be switched to OFF in a jiffy. The nutcases who repeat the trash on here probably can't even get their chatter heard on FOX or Limbaugh.

But anyway, I take the browbeating scenerio with a grain of salt and probably just desperation of a new kid on the block who is getting upset about not being as important as they hoped would happen on walking through those hallowed doors.

Don't you remember the news report where republican reporters were going to infiltrate some of the left leaning blogs?

They eventually show their hand, and they've been called out on dkos. So, beware.

You're right Dustee. Ryan Grim is a Politico.com contributor.

Look at his other HuffPo articles and you'll see his bias.

It reminds me of how the Pugs tried to influence the Democratic Primaries by having Republicans vote for Hillary to prolong the process.

Based on what ? Lets keep it REAL !
Bush / Cheney lied us into a pre-emtive Iraq war- causing many deaths / and leaving kids without parents. for no real reason. And the Reagan-then Bush / W / Greenspan policy of deregulation of banks / Wall st that led us to this meltdown. Bush even cooked the books- so as to NOT show the true cost of the wars.
The truth hurts doesn't it ?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:28 AM on 06/13/2009

Bush and Cheney should probably be in prison, particularly because of torture. Obama is expanding the war in Afghanistan into Pakistan and there are no signs of leaving Iraq. You are right that Bush/Cheney were worse with the wars...but it isn't the blowout you think.
Your economic analysis is more questionable. Even if you believe that the real cause of the crisis was deregulation (instead of loose monetary policy, which I think is the true cause), Bill Clinton was responsible as well. I love how you just skip over the one democratic President. It's such obvious blind partisanship.

Oh come on! Because he's not pulling 150K men out of Iraq by yesterday he's President Bush? I don't know which is worse...the far left or the far right.

Let's have a reasonable foreign policy...pull out of Iraq within two years and put more troops in Afghanistan. Isn't that what Obama wants?

What the hell is a giveaway of $100 Million of borrowed from China Dollars doing in a War Funding Bill? These things should be voted on separately on there own merit. What's wrong with Pilosi. Can't she see what has to be done? She has only been in the House since way back last century.

Look, freshmen congressmen do get to roll the president. Especially not a popular one. Attempting to do so often ends up with the President standing in their congressional district with his arm around a different democrat talking about how this dem shares his values and agenda. The point is, Nancy Pelosi can fight with the president. Joe Shmoe from New Home CT in his first term needs to fall in line behind something this important. And least you think this is something random that he decided to do, this is part of what he negotiated in Europe when he was asking people for more troops. He promised Europe the IMF funding and he has to deliver on it. So he can get it from the Dems or he can start cutting deals with the GOP. The lat thing we want is to force him into a position where he starts trading things we want with the GOP for votes on a bill that he has to have no matter what. If he can't deliver on something this basic with Europe they won't ever listen to him again. These idiots are damaging O's cred around the world over something they can not stop.

Paying money to a foreign body is akin to treason. The Founding Fathers must be rolling over in their graves. This is not what this country was founded upon and we don't pay fiat to anyone.

hmargret has it right
"How disappointingly status quo our president is turning out to be.
He's just another war monger like Bush, Clinton, Reagan, Nixon and the rest. Now it's all threats...he's no change at all."

We must keep the pressure on. I think he's a good man at heart but there is no way he'll do what we want without public pressure.

Obama = 5 + months !

I think President Obama has inherited a lot of unfinished republican & Bush business that if he backed out of, would make trouble for our government as a whole, but if he continues to see it through, will get accusations from the Republicans. As if Pres. Obama can turn it all around and start over again. Anyone who can't see what the lying, greedy Repubs are about, is pretty deficient in the brain department.

He isn't anti war he is anti stupid war. Useless war. Wars of aggression. Afghanistan attacked the US, we took over their country. We will stay in their country as long as we stayed in Germany and Japan... meaning forever.

'Afghanistan attacked the US...'

Last I read, it was a criminal group who attacked the U.S., not a country. Their leader was apparently holed up in Afghanistan, but then moved to Pakistan. No matter, we ended up not going after the country and not the group, killing many, many innocent civilians in the process.

And Obama is continuing this obscene practice, in the name of 'safety,' when no thinking person believes occupying a country is the safest, most productive, or most rational way to deal with a criminal group.

Obama has thus far shown himself to be most eager to appear tough, just like his republican buddies. He'd rather be tough than right. Damn disappointing.

Honestly, do you think that will do any good?

I mean, taking everything into account, which I know you do, will it do any good?

Or, are we misleading the younger folk into believing they actually have a say in what happens?

And maybe that is best. I just had a 'younger' folk come to my door today, a pro Obama dude type guy .... scary. He, scary. He, nutty.

Facts? He didn't know what that word meant. He had NO idea of who Mr O appointed. None - knew none of their background. He knew, well, not much of anything and yet he was HIGH 5'n pro Obama. Even though he couldn't tell me why??
