The White House is playing hardball with Democrats who intend to vote against the supplemental war spending bill, threatening freshmen who oppose it that they won't get help with reelection and will be cut off from the White House, Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-Calif.) said Friday.

"We're not going to help you. You'll never hear from us again," Woolsey said the White House is telling freshmen. She wouldn't say who is issuing the threats, and the White House didn't immediately return a call. [UPDATE: White House spokesman Nick Shapiro says Woolsey's charge is not true.]

Woolsey said she herself had not been pressured because the White House and leadership know she's a firm no vote. But she had heard from other members about the White House pressure.

"Nancy's working with it. It's going to be a very close vote," Rep. Jack Murtha (D-Penn.), a close ally of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Friday. "We don't have any Republican leeway, so far we have no Republican going to vote for it."

"We'll pass it, but it'll be a close vote. Every vote will count," Murtha said.

Woolsey and Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) are both ardent opponents of the war and no friends of the IMF, which is in line for a $100 billion extension of credit in the same bill. Both pointed out that the Democratic leadership didn't bring the bill up for a vote on Friday, indicating they weren't confident they had the votes.

"It says something that this hasn't been brought up yet," Kucinich said. "I will tell you there's a good number of members holding solid. That's why this thing hasn't passed yet."

Kucinich said he's whipping the 51 Democrats who previously voted against the war funding and also whipping Democrats who have voted against the IMF in the past. He said that tremendous pressure was being exerted on the folks leaning against it.

"This is politics, you know, there's a lot of pressure put on members," he said. "But from what I can see, people are concerned that when they go back home, they're going to have to explain why they voted for the war if their constituency's opposed to it. People who have consistently opposed the war are going to have difficulty explaining why they switched."

Story continues below

"There are a lot of progressives who don't like the IMF," said Woolsey. Kucinich is making the case to colleagues that the IMF loan is merely a backdoor bailout of European banks.

Woolsey, co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, said she held a meeting earlier this week among Democrats opposing the package but is not actively whipping against it.

The GOP is also objecting to the inclusion of IMF money in the war bill. Kucinich recalled that the last time progressive Democrats joined with Republicans to defeat a Democratic agenda item came in 1999, when 26 Democrats sided with Republicans to block President Clinton's continuing bombing of Serbia.

"Republicans had their own agenda," recalled Kucinich.

The White House may be forced to drop the IMF provision and fight for it another day, but it's a top administration priority.

"That may happen," said Kucinich. "But as long as it's in there, it's a force that's moving in the direction of defeat of the bill."

UPDATE: The Netroots are pushing increasingly hard against the war bill and have compiled a whip count.

How dangerously naive.

These murderers, domestic terrorists and hate criminals know EXACTLY what they are doing.

And every day their fires are fanned by Faux News and the other right wing corporate media.

I pray as well, and even forgive some, but NEVER forget the crimes perpetrated on this country and on me and my family and friends, some of whom are no longer with us thanks to the christian killers and BushCo.

Well, from one ungodly hate filled right winger: I am surprisingly cheerful lately, as this administration runs off the rails with a filibuster-proof Congressional majority and nobody but themselves to blame.

Every couple of generations we have to re-learn that collectivism is the road to ruin. The lesson will be particularly harsh this time and may usher in a new golden age of limited government.

Carry on, O-man!

Maybe Obama won't get OUR VOTES again.....this is NOT the change I voted for.
How disappointingly status quo our president is turning out to be.
He's just another war monger like Bush, Clinton, Reagan, Nixon and the rest.

Now it's all threats...he's no change at all.

Do these people have a plan for how we are going to get our troops out? Isn't it dangerous to just pull them out. I'm sorry but I can't say for certain that I agree with them about not voting for the funding. I have mixed feelings.

Dangerous for who? They left pretty fast in Vietnam. Congress stopped the fundingl, they stayed long enough to burn documents, left a lot of equipment and left very quickly. It didn't seem that dangerous.

This report is a lie.

From the Press Briefing:

"Q A quick domestic question. There is an account in the Huffington Post in which allegedly freshmen Democrats are being told that if they don't vote with the President on the supplemental war bill, they're effectively cut off. And I'm wondering, is this report accurate or how would you characterize --

MR. GIBBS: What's the basis for the report?

Q Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey said it on the record.

MR. GIBBS: So she's saying that about freshmen? Because she's not a freshman.

Q That's right. She's saying she's being told by a freshman.

MR. GIBBS: I haven't read the blog post or heard that.

Q But is that the White House's position?

MR. GIBBS: No.

Q So if freshmen out of a basis of a vote of conscience or whatever want to reject the supplemental, are they still in good standing with the White House?

MR. GIBBS: Well, I would -- we have had meetings with and dealt with members of both parties. On some votes they've been with us. On some votes, they haven't. I think the President in speaking with every member of Congress would make a strong case for a supplemental bill that provides the necessary funding that our troops need in both Iraq and Afghanistan; important money that relates to our ongoing diplomatic efforts in an important country like Pakistan."

Every time I see another chapter of this Obama no change administration unfold, I am convinced that all of American national politics is a sham. Obama has offered up ZERO real reform, and CONTINUES BUSH policy over a wide spectrum of fields. We WANTED CHANGE.

I voted for him hoping against all my cynicism that he might be the real deal.

Sometimes I despair that Democrats make such poor allies for each other. Getting Democrats to work together is like herding cats, there is always one ready to head off on his own. One would think that Democrats could get together and quietly agree on a plan to responsibly wind down this war, and then execute it, but that doesn't seem to be so. There is always at least one Democrat who wants a little more attention and is willing to be a spoiler. So Democrats take the horrendous problems Obama inherited from Bush and then compound them by constantly whining and playing games. He's not getting out of Iraq fast enough, or he's not supporting gays enough, or his major overhaul of health care is unacceptable because it isn't single payer. On and on.

One thing for sure, if a Democratic congress defunds our troops while they are in harm's way, it will be a stain on the Democratic party's reputation that will cost us elections for decades.

Actually, Obama is following Bush's plan on pulling the troops out of Iraq, even tho he said during the campaign that he would have them out in 6 months. The 25 Dems who will not vote for the funding, is standing on their campaign promises, which was the same as Obamas. Obama is the one who is lying to all of us.

While I am no longer a big fan of Obama, I'm also not a big fan of lies and distortions.

Obama never said he would get us out of Iraq in 6 months. He said he would withdraw the troops responsibly based on the situarion "on the ground" , in consultation with the Generals. His time-line was 12 months. We are now on a 16 month schedule.

The timetable was agreed to by Bush and the Iraqis - Bush doing a 180 and embracing Obama's campaign promise.

As a progressive, I'm normally against war. But not all war. Sometimes war is inevitable to prevent agression and death from evil crazies like Hitler, The Taliban and Bin Laden. I fear that, if we leave tommorrow, the Taliban will once again own Afghanistan and Bin Laden will be sitting in luxury in Kabul, a threat to the whole world.

To avoid another 9/11, I believe we need to pacify Afghanistan and drive the Taliban out of both Afghanistan and nuclear Pakistan. This is a fairly basic national-security issue. We also need to be there in support of the values that progressives are supposed to believe in: such as women's rights, gay rights, democracy. I fear that if we leave Afghanistan now, teenagers will soon be hanged for alleged "homosexuality" and women stoned to death for showing their ankles.

This would be grossly irresponsible of us.

Part 2. Neither the present economic crisis, nor the ongoing occupations/wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are accidental. While the obvious precipitators of the economic melt-down are the Wall Street/bankster thieves that have always milked the American taxpayers and "sucker-investors", nobody is bothering to examine the links of the local thieves with multiple foreign interests and with the governance structures of the multinational corporations; no one is examining the links among the IMF, World Bank, Federal Reserve, European central banks, the international arms industry, the CIA, etc., or tracking who benefits. Everything is related to everything else, and none of us really knows what constraints have been placed on Obama by those forces, nor the implicit or explicit threats delivered should he fail to respond "appropriately" to those pressures. Remember, or look up, what happened to Lincoln, John and Robert Kennedy, and numerous leaders around the world -- especially those in resource-rich territories -- who dared to defy and/or threaten those "powers-that-be". China is something of a 'wild-card' in the deck, as are possibly India and Pakistan. Remains to be seen how all this will shake out, but I'm just not ready to give up on Obama yet.

Got to learn also about the Rockefellers and the Rothschild and their various "foundations." The IMF through "humanitarian"aid has to done more to rape the economies of poor, developing nations than any military could. This goes much deeper than what is being discussed here. And yes, Bush AND Obama are the puppets of these banksters and shadowy organizations. The Lincoln, Kennedy, Dr. King, Founding Fathers of this country would have been labeled as extremists and arrested under this criminal regime.

Um... so are going communist or what. people can argue what an executive has on them or that congressmen and women don't have to face the consequences of their decision like a president does, but they represent the people who elected them, and should not have to be bullied by the Whitehouse who always has a different agenda (special interest), hence the separation of powers in our constitution, because that would be a constituional and party. Many totalitarian governments have legislatures too, as meaningless as both presidents have tried making them. By the way the founding fathers envisioned congress leading the country, not a would-be dictator, hence why congress can form leadership positions and internal political structures as it needs and pleases. Perhaps congress should consider finding ways of making their constitutional powers more effective and relevant to combat the coming fascism of this country that greatly accelerated under the Reagan-Bush-Clinton complex and might just manifest under Obama. Martial law was already threatened if the stimulus package wasn't passed even though Obama's laws aren't given to congress to evaluate more than 24 hours before the vote. Wake up! Ron Paul 2012!
