The White House is playing hardball with Democrats who intend to vote against the supplemental war spending bill, threatening freshmen who oppose it that they won't get help with reelection and will be cut off from the White House, Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-Calif.) said Friday.

"We're not going to help you. You'll never hear from us again," Woolsey said the White House is telling freshmen. She wouldn't say who is issuing the threats, and the White House didn't immediately return a call. [UPDATE: White House spokesman Nick Shapiro says Woolsey's charge is not true.]

Woolsey said she herself had not been pressured because the White House and leadership know she's a firm no vote. But she had heard from other members about the White House pressure.

"Nancy's working with it. It's going to be a very close vote," Rep. Jack Murtha (D-Penn.), a close ally of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Friday. "We don't have any Republican leeway, so far we have no Republican going to vote for it."

"We'll pass it, but it'll be a close vote. Every vote will count," Murtha said.

Woolsey and Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) are both ardent opponents of the war and no friends of the IMF, which is in line for a $100 billion extension of credit in the same bill. Both pointed out that the Democratic leadership didn't bring the bill up for a vote on Friday, indicating they weren't confident they had the votes.

"It says something that this hasn't been brought up yet," Kucinich said. "I will tell you there's a good number of members holding solid. That's why this thing hasn't passed yet."

Kucinich said he's whipping the 51 Democrats who previously voted against the war funding and also whipping Democrats who have voted against the IMF in the past. He said that tremendous pressure was being exerted on the folks leaning against it.

"This is politics, you know, there's a lot of pressure put on members," he said. "But from what I can see, people are concerned that when they go back home, they're going to have to explain why they voted for the war if their constituency's opposed to it. People who have consistently opposed the war are going to have difficulty explaining why they switched."

"There are a lot of progressives who don't like the IMF," said Woolsey. Kucinich is making the case to colleagues that the IMF loan is merely a backdoor bailout of European banks.

Woolsey, co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, said she held a meeting earlier this week among Democrats opposing the package but is not actively whipping against it.

The GOP is also objecting to the inclusion of IMF money in the war bill. Kucinich recalled that the last time progressive Democrats joined with Republicans to defeat a Democratic agenda item came in 1999, when 26 Democrats sided with Republicans to block President Clinton's continuing bombing of Serbia.

"Republicans had their own agenda," recalled Kucinich.

The White House may be forced to drop the IMF provision and fight for it another day, but it's a top administration priority.

"That may happen," said Kucinich. "But as long as it's in there, it's a force that's moving in the direction of defeat of the bill."

UPDATE: The Netroots are pushing increasingly hard against the war bill and have compiled a whip count.

If Obama doesn't wake up and quite kissing corporatist butts he will never hear from us again.

Part 1. For whatever it's worth, I find the impatience of many posters to this thread to be almost as frustrating as the apparent "backtracking" going on in the Obama administration. The President is NOT the Savior of the World, nor the savior of our liberal ambitions. What he confronted when he took office was a far more chaotic mess than the public had been informed about, since the MSM seems to have a vested interest in preserving the status quo, dating from about 1916. In addition, the public has little or no idea of the forces operating behind the scenes in our visible government that have and continue to shape policies and actions for about the last 100 years. Conspiracy theory? You bet! And there's more and more evidence of it than ever before, if people would take the time to examine the voluminous data that's available but must be dug out from obscure hiding places. The age-old criteria for digging out the truth are still, "Follow the money." and "Cross-reference everything."

I think it is good that we have a President that isn't afraid to twist some arms . This war was laid in our laps and now we have to continue it ,like it or not . So politicians that want to prevent the President from doing what is necessary need to be brought up short.

BS! I am tired of being told there is no money for healthcare, education, roads, mass transportation, etc., while this President, exactly like the last one, continues to pour money down a rathole that kills our troops for no good reason and kills hundreds of thousands of people in other countries for those same poorly formulated reasons. Peace is harder but costs a lot less.

And don't think that the uniform is going to get you any slack from me. I had one myself from another stupid war and there are still idiots from that war that didn't learn the lesson of war either. Wars don't work to solve anything! What wars do is cause more wars! And what Peace and making friends with other countries does is create more Peace and more friends! Who needs to be brought up short is a President who was not authorized to continue two useless and unnecessary wars.

You're missing the point. Obama is NOT telling you that there isn't money for healthcare, education, roads, mass transport, etc. In fact, he is doing everything he can to spend money on all four of those things. Ever heard of his stimulus package with it's numerous roads projects? New rail going from Maine to Oklahoma? Massive healthcare overhaul?

That said, he isn't going to end the war in a way that would cause us to go right back there as soon as everything falls apart. He's trying to end it responsibly. He just gave a major speech telling the Muslim world that they are respected, and took hell for daring from our domestic Taliban.

Many of them are in safe Democratic districts and don't need White House help to get reelected. The ones who do will doubtless cave in to any White House demands.

That's called fascism, communism or totaliarianism. Hell, why vote? Why have the congress if they're just supposed to rubber stamp the president? Hell why think about it? Lets just march and do whatever the president tells us. And what should be done about those that don't agree with the president, or think critically about what happens in this democracy?

Gee -- facism and communism have what to do with each other? Well, nothing, but it would require have some degree of common sense to know that ...

Funny how the neocons blasted anyone who disagreed with W as traitors, yet now they're suddenly longing for "critical thought." Uh huh.

Repeat that to yourself, perhaps 20 times daily.

What is emerging to me is an extremely pragmatic politician, much in the vein of Bill Clinton. While I wasn't paying close attention back then, I am this time 'round.

I'm disappointed.

It's possible Rahm Emanuel got a little carried away with the whip. Since Huffpo first posted this, the WH has denied Woolsey's comments. Perhaps the Prez took Rahm's whip away and substituted reason.

Nevertheless, the democratic progressives are going to have to be dealt with (a group with whom Dean was much more effective than Emanuel). Living up to campaign promises by getting our Iraq troops home needs to remain on schedule which is by and large is: no deviation.

Dropping the 100B IMF credit extension (be still my beating heart, who are we to be giving credit) will appease many except those promised who await it. But it will be dealt with later.

This is pathetic of the Obama administration to keep pressuring us to finance these stupid wars. The only people getting rich work in the defense industry, the people in Washington from the lobbyists greasing their palms and the only ones dying are the poor and the brave. You have backtracked a great deal on this area, and for this those who defend you need to wake up and stop their senseless and nonsensical shilling...

But wise up, Mr. President, the same people who saw to Bush's defeat for his war shenanigans will defeat you, without hesitation, without regret, and without batting an eye.

When fuel prices go through the roof this winter his popularity numbers are going to drop like a stone, and deservedly so.

He's come through with NONE of the promises he campaigned on. His only hope for getting re-elected lies in his plan to delay bringing the troops home from Iraq until 2012: a self-serving political move if ever there was one.

Unemployment will continue to rise. Tax revenues will plummet despite much higher marginal rates on everyone, not just the rich. Inflation will exceed late 70's levels. Weeds will grow in the streets of Rust Belt cities. Crime will rise. Malaise will grip the nation. This clown is Jimmy Carter on steroids.

The only part of the country that will do well is Alaska, where they are the only state to have decreased unemployment this year compared to last year, despite lower energy prices.

Governor Palin has already cut her state's expenditures by 20% in nominal dollars and even more in real dollars. She has shrewdly planned for $65-75 oil instead of the $100+ it fetched last year, and balanced her budget without breaking a sweat.

She has just gone eye to eye with the lobbyists and lawyers of Exxon-Mobil, one of the largest corporations in the world, and bent them to her will. The natural gas pipeline that will soon be under way with Exxon aboard will provide lots of high paying jobs and critically necessary energy resources for Americans.

The prophetess of the North will win election by a 60% majority in 2012, and fearlessly dismantle all the statist cruft accumulated since LBJ. I bet she'll even get the troops out of Iraq.
