The White House is playing hardball with Democrats who intend to vote against the supplemental war spending bill, threatening freshmen who oppose it that they won't get help with reelection and will be cut off from the White House, Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-Calif.) said Friday.

"We're not going to help you. You'll never hear from us again," Woolsey said the White House is telling freshmen. She wouldn't say who is issuing the threats, and the White House didn't immediately return a call. [UPDATE: White House spokesman Nick Shapiro says Woolsey's charge is not true.]

Woolsey said she herself had not been pressured because the White House and leadership know she's a firm no vote. But she had heard from other members about the White House pressure.

"Nancy's working with it. It's going to be a very close vote," Rep. Jack Murtha (D-Penn.), a close ally of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Friday. "We don't have any Republican leeway, so far we have no Republican going to vote for it."

"We'll pass it, but it'll be a close vote. Every vote will count," Murtha said.

Woolsey and Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) are both ardent opponents of the war and no friends of the IMF, which is in line for a $100 billion extension of credit in the same bill. Both pointed out that the Democratic leadership didn't bring the bill up for a vote on Friday, indicating they weren't confident they had the votes.

"It says something that this hasn't been brought up yet," Kucinich said. "I will tell you there's a good number of members holding solid. That's why this thing hasn't passed yet."

Kucinich said he's whipping the 51 Democrats who previously voted against the war funding and also whipping Democrats who have voted against the IMF in the past. He said that tremendous pressure was being exerted on the folks leaning against it.

"This is politics, you know, there's a lot of pressure put on members," he said. "But from what I can see, people are concerned that when they go back home, they're going to have to explain why they voted for the war if their constituency's opposed to it. People who have consistently opposed the war are going to have difficulty explaining why they switched."

"There are a lot of progressives who don't like the IMF," said Woolsey. Kucinich is making the case to colleagues that the IMF loan is merely a backdoor bailout of European banks.

Woolsey, co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, said she held a meeting earlier this week among Democrats opposing the package but is not actively whipping against it.

The GOP is also objecting to the inclusion of IMF money in the war bill. Kucinich recalled that the last time progressive Democrats joined with Republicans to defeat a Democratic agenda item came in 1999, when 26 Democrats sided with Republicans to block President Clinton's continuing bombing of Serbia.

"Republicans had their own agenda," recalled Kucinich.

The White House may be forced to drop the IMF provision and fight for it another day, but it's a top administration priority.

"That may happen," said Kucinich. "But as long as it's in there, it's a force that's moving in the direction of defeat of the bill."

UPDATE: The Netroots are pushing increasingly hard against the war bill and have compiled a whip count.

Seeing as though about 100,000,000 of Americans are minors who can't vote, another 1/3 that are people that are going to die in 10-20 years and don't have to worry about it as much as say a 24 year old that will be taxed his entire life for these BS wars and future ones so a bunch of suits can retire in Europe with a bunch of hookers and wine older than me, which makes about 1/100 of the population, including those that don't vote. 250,000 is about as many people who are functionally literate in this country and larger than most US cities. That's actually not that bad, considering not even 1/3 of this country in the voting age group has the internet either. Number's values are only relative to what they are assigned to.

Need some term limits for some of the Congress.

Talk about the Repubs.
How about the Partisan Democrats. My way or the highway....

They are trying to rush everything thru without thinking about the
problems that result later.
Just trying to get feathers in their hats so they can say "look what we've done."

Must be time for another recess for them. Somebody needs to make the Congress account for the time they actually spend at work.
Sure are overpaid as far as I'm concerned.

They get too much time off (with pay) and far too many perks.
Also, they don't even have to state how much they actually make. They only have to give it in between two brackets (such as $100.000 and 250,000) so
you can't tell exactly how much it really is.
Wonder how much they pay in taxes.
They should get in trouble for trying to coerce the freshmen into voting the way they want them to.
Stick with it Kucinich...you seem to know what it is all about.

I say this as someone who did not support Obama, but to his defense, Presidents have to live in a very scary place that most congressmen/women don't have to live. It's called reality and a more singularly-felt accountability. You are judged by the entire country, not just your small district. If an entire w.ar goes badly, it's on you, not on some random California representative. If the banking industry comes to a grinding halt, it's on you.

The title of the lead article in Harper's this week is "Barack Hoover Obama." And the article's thesis is that Obama can't think or act beyond the conventional economic free-market corporate wisdom of his time. How true. On no point is this man inspiring. I'm sick of the moderates and right-wingers in this country. What do their ideas and plans accomplish but more of the same? We need major campaign finance reform. We need to adopt universal single-payer health care; drastically downsize the military; deconsolidate the media; get out of Iraq and Afghanistan; push huge "green energy" projects and adopt "sustainable" economic models that won't destroy the planet; bring back government-run military and other public assets (end privatization projects); strengthen our civil rights; end torture, including the abuse of our own prisoners and detainees by local police and by prison system employees; we need to forget about the "War on Drugs" and institute rehabilitation programs and the legalization of marijuana. We need to investigate the malfeasance and failures that led to 911 and from that day on justified the reduction of our civil rights, etc. etc. etc. These are major goals, but Obama is just one big f.... failure. One more failure. One more nail in the coffin of the American dream.

Totally disagree, change will not come through our two party system as it exists today. We need a very real third party option that is based on the founding principles of this country, not just on who can get elected. Even if we don't when the compromise between smaller coalitions can create something very real and very pure.

I think you're being a bit premature. The Executive does not make law. I think a lot of what's going on is political maneuvering. Sometimes the pendulum swings far from center before it finds balance.

Have a drink, burn a bowl, chill out, or whatever, but give this admin's politics a chance to mature (there's that word again). As we well know, lots of so-called (blue) Democrats are anything but. Obama's biggest hurdle is his own party.

Nice thoughts LITU. It is very hard not to be impatient with Obama. Progressives are frustrated by his backtracking on a lot of issues, and I myself tend to be frustrated as well. This comes after a horrific last 8 years for our country. However, the urge to chuck him under the bus so soon and throw in the towel to me seems a bit premature. I am hopeful that Obama is making calculated decisions on all of the important issues upon which he appears to be backsliding to build political capital, after which he will address those pesky little promises, like bringing the troops home in 16 months. Patience. It's only been about five months.
