PHOENIX — Two of three people arrested in a southern Arizona home invasion that left a little girl and her father dead had connections to a Washington state anti-illegal immigration group that conducts border watch activities in Arizona.

Jason Eugene Bush, 34, Shawna Forde, 41, and Albert Robert Gaxiola, 42, have been charged with two counts each of first-degree murder and other charges, said Sheriff Clarence Dupnik of Pima County, Ariz.

The trio are alleged to have dressed as law enforcement officers and forced their way into a home about 10 miles north of the Mexican border in rural Arivaca on May 30, wounding a woman and fatally shooting her husband and their 9-year-old daughter. Their motive was financial, Dupnik said.

"The husband who was murdered has a history of being involved in narcotics and there was an anticipation that there would be a considerable amount of cash at this location as well as the possibility of drugs," Dupnik said.

Forde is the leader of Minutemen American Defense, a small border watch group, and Bush goes by the nickname "Gunny" and is its operations director, according to the group's Web site. She is from Everett, Wash., has recently been living in Arizona and was once associated with the better known and larger Minuteman Civil Defense Corps.

A statement attributed to officers of Forde's group and posted on its Web site on Saturday extended condolences to the victims' families and said the group doesn't condone such acts and will cooperate with law enforcement.

"This is not what Minutemen do," said member Chuck Stonex, who responded to an e-mail from The Associated Press sent through the Web site. "Minutemen observe, document and report. This is nothing more than a cold-hearted criminal act, and that is all we want to say."

The assailants planned to leave no one alive, Dupnik said at a press conference in Tucson on Friday. He said Forde was the ringleader.

Story continues below

"This was a planned home invasion where the plan was to kill all the people inside this trailer so there would be no witnesses," Dupnik said. "To just kill a 9-year-old girl because she might be a potential witness to me is just one of the most despicable acts that I have heard of."

Dupnik said Forde continued working through Friday to raise a large amount of money to make her anti-illegal immigrant operation more sophisticated.

Forde denied involvement as she was led from sheriff's headquarters.

"No, I did not do it," she said. "I had nothing to do with it."

Gaxiola also denied involvement; Bush was arrested at a Kingman, Ariz., hospital where he was being treated for a leg wound he allegedly received when the woman who survived the attack managed to get a gun and fire back.

Killed were 9-year-old Brisenia Flores and her 29-year-old father, Raul Junior Flores. The name of the wounded woman who survived the attack hasn't been released.

Forde is well known in the anti-illegal immigration community, said Brian Levin, director of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University-San Bernardino.

"She's someone who even within the anti-immigration movement has been labeled as unstable," Levin said. "She was basically forced out of another anti-immigrant group, the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, and then founded her own organization."

Stonex, of Alamagordo, N.M., said he met Forde while on an Arizona border watch operation last fall, and liked her despite her reputation in the Minutemen community.

"I know she's always had sort of a checkered past but I take people for what I see and not what I hear," the 57-year-old said.

She recruited him to start a new chapter in New Mexico, but was secretive about her group or its members. Stonex said he didn't know how to recruit for a chapter and never did.

He said Forde called him on the day of the attack while he was visiting Arizona and asked him to bring bandages to an Arivaca home because Bush had been wounded. Stonex said it appeared Bush had a relatively minor gunshot wound, which he treated.

He said Forde and Bush told him Bush been wounded by a smuggler who shot at him while the group were patrolling the desert.

Stonex said he didn't suspect that might not be the case until was contacted by a deputy on Saturday about their alleged involvement in the crime.

This is cheap, hate filled, reporting. It's dishonest.
Identifying a criminal by their race, religion, sexual orientation , or even political party is done for the purpose of denigrating that group rather than reporting on the crime.
Unfortunately, we have a large, ignorant population that buys into the theory that because a black person commits a crime, it reinforces their belief that all black people are criminals.
This story is an attempt to associate a criminal with a political idea. Its the same thing.

Hmmm, let's see, a group of people who spend their time trying to keep Mexican people out of the US invade the home of a Mexican family and attempt to kill everyone inside. There does seem to be a racial connection here, to deny that is ignorant. If a group of people who belong to a Neo-Nazi group broke into a Jewish families home and killed everyone inside, don't you think the nazi connection is something the media would be obligated to report?

The US government tries to keep illegal Mexicans out of the US. Is that racial?

Are you suggesting that if the criminal had been, say, a Democratic Party precinct chairman, that fact would not have been included in the story?

That fact would be in the story because he would be a famous person. His religion should not be included in the story.

Here, here; these people's only saviors, are their young children. I hope they help them in time. I saw a segment on Anderson Cooper 360, where this hate filled guy, changed his life after 15 yrs, because his young child, uttered out loudly, the hate-filled words he had spoken. I also just saw "American History X", and it shows how hate can kill. I feel so sorry for those people, since we all know, it takes more to hate than to just be, and allow others the freedoms and rights they deserve.

Here in Arizona Tucson news is reporting all details on this case, including the "minute men connection" but in Sheriff Arpaio's area of domain in Phoenix not one peep on the "minute men connection in major newspaper there"! Not surprsing since Arpaio has close ties to minute men, is buddies with a major minute man leader whom is opposing McCain in next election! I guess he see's his buddies campaign hopes dashed for sure with this scandal! Also Arpaio uses the minute men in his racial profiled sweeps in Phoenix area, so its likely this is a not so good thing for the "pink panty brigade" of Arpaio's fans!

Claims that this woman is not "main stream minute men organization is hollow", one of the men arrested also was minute man member out of Kingman Arizona, a very main stream chapter of the minute men, he fled there when wounded by the mother when he went back into make sure no witnesses were left alive! Kingman Arizona is where infamous home grown terrorist Timothy McVeigh and his buddy had a bunker where they did their pre-Oklahoma City bombing planning and preparations. How curious is that? News reports in Tucson television reports stated 4 men 1 woman dressed as police officers did this home invasion, so 1 man is still at large at this time! I have long wondered how these minute men whom come from all over the USA to sit in the desert watching the border allegedly non violently supported themselves with no visible income, seemingly with no money issues! Well we can see at least some "moonlight as home invasion specialists, robbers, thieves & murderous child killers"!

These folks stole the playbook of the Weather Underground, a rabid, murderous group in the late 60's.

It must be hard to find equivalent violence on the Left. Heard a pundit trying to compare the uptick in radicalized ultraconservatives to Earth First! and their tree spiking from the '80s.

But if you'd like to see how moderates and liberals should react in the face of ultra-right criminal behaviour, you need look no further than Iran this weekend. The Center is claiming the Fundies stole the election, and the Extremist who alienates the world is going to serve another term.

Hmm. Reminds me of something, somewhere.

PEACE

Please use the Google before making dumb comparisons like this one. The Minutemen act on their hatred of non-white people, whereas the Weathermen were acting in response to the illegal activities of the federal government, the Chicago Police, and other authorities who were supposed to be upholding the law not breaking it. They committed bombings of property, not people, and actually killed more of themselves (3) than of innocent bystanders (1, a police officer).

I'm not defending the Weathermen - they committed crimes, and they faced their punishments. But they didn't set out to murder people, the way that the federal government and other authorities did in the late `60s/early `70s. And they most certainly didn't set out to vilify and attack a group of people the way that the Minutemen do.

Please, think before you type.

After replying to your Palin 'reply', I made the mistake of opening up your previous comments.

I'd suggest you take your own advice and do some research. If you had taken just those two seconds to do a word search you'd know that the bumbling agents of the Weather Underground blew themselves to bits with a "nail bomb". This is an explosive device that is specifically designed to maim and kiII people - not "property". As such, Oughton's, Gold's, and Robbins' murderous intent was only matched by their incompetence.

As for the Minutemen Project their conduct has not only been entirely legal, but they themselves have been the subject of assault, threats and false evidence.

And, if you want to denounce an entire organization by the conduct of one of its members feel free to start with the ACLU.

When the leadership of the Republican Party stands up and denounces these kinds of actions and the kinds of invective that fan the flames, only then will they begin to separate themselves from the extremists they have spawned.

I've yet to come across anyone on this site who is truly a free thinker, without ideological taint. Some condemn some criminals acts, other criminal acts committed by those they oppose ideologically, some excuse criminal acts with which they agree ideologically, some believe in the law of the land and condemn all criminal acts. There is a difference between peacefully protesting civil laws that are flawed; another to commit criminal acts. Certainly some laws are designed to protect human life and some to protect property. Is the "environmentalist" who burns down a housing development and kills a squatter any less criminal because of his or her ideology than someone who conducts a home invasion based on greed? I don't think so.

As long as right-wing domestic terrorists are tolerated in America, right-wing domestic terrorists will act in America. Whether blowing up Federal buildings, killing physicians, shooting up museums or murdering families, the specific motivations do not matter. They are all acts of terror.

Stop them and make their public leaders pay for their words.

This headline is misleading...it implies that Ms. Forde was affiliated with one of the two major "MInuteman" groups (the Minuteman Project or the the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps).

The two major "Minuteman" groups do good work (for the most part). They (again, for the most part) merely observe, report, and relay information to the Border Patrol. It's the same principle as a neighborhood watch, but on a much larger scale and involving crucial stakes.
