PHOENIX — Two of three people arrested in a southern Arizona home invasion that left a little girl and her father dead had connections to a Washington state anti-illegal immigration group that conducts border watch activities in Arizona.

Jason Eugene Bush, 34, Shawna Forde, 41, and Albert Robert Gaxiola, 42, have been charged with two counts each of first-degree murder and other charges, said Sheriff Clarence Dupnik of Pima County, Ariz.

The trio are alleged to have dressed as law enforcement officers and forced their way into a home about 10 miles north of the Mexican border in rural Arivaca on May 30, wounding a woman and fatally shooting her husband and their 9-year-old daughter. Their motive was financial, Dupnik said.

"The husband who was murdered has a history of being involved in narcotics and there was an anticipation that there would be a considerable amount of cash at this location as well as the possibility of drugs," Dupnik said.

Forde is the leader of Minutemen American Defense, a small border watch group, and Bush goes by the nickname "Gunny" and is its operations director, according to the group's Web site. She is from Everett, Wash., has recently been living in Arizona and was once associated with the better known and larger Minuteman Civil Defense Corps.

A statement attributed to officers of Forde's group and posted on its Web site on Saturday extended condolences to the victims' families and said the group doesn't condone such acts and will cooperate with law enforcement.

"This is not what Minutemen do," said member Chuck Stonex, who responded to an e-mail from The Associated Press sent through the Web site. "Minutemen observe, document and report. This is nothing more than a cold-hearted criminal act, and that is all we want to say."

The assailants planned to leave no one alive, Dupnik said at a press conference in Tucson on Friday. He said Forde was the ringleader.

"This was a planned home invasion where the plan was to kill all the people inside this trailer so there would be no witnesses," Dupnik said. "To just kill a 9-year-old girl because she might be a potential witness to me is just one of the most despicable acts that I have heard of."

Dupnik said Forde continued working through Friday to raise a large amount of money to make her anti-illegal immigrant operation more sophisticated.

Forde denied involvement as she was led from sheriff's headquarters.

"No, I did not do it," she said. "I had nothing to do with it."

Gaxiola also denied involvement; Bush was arrested at a Kingman, Ariz., hospital where he was being treated for a leg wound he allegedly received when the woman who survived the attack managed to get a gun and fire back.

Killed were 9-year-old Brisenia Flores and her 29-year-old father, Raul Junior Flores. The name of the wounded woman who survived the attack hasn't been released.

Forde is well known in the anti-illegal immigration community, said Brian Levin, director of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University-San Bernardino.

"She's someone who even within the anti-immigration movement has been labeled as unstable," Levin said. "She was basically forced out of another anti-immigrant group, the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, and then founded her own organization."

Stonex, of Alamagordo, N.M., said he met Forde while on an Arizona border watch operation last fall, and liked her despite her reputation in the Minutemen community.

"I know she's always had sort of a checkered past but I take people for what I see and not what I hear," the 57-year-old said.

She recruited him to start a new chapter in New Mexico, but was secretive about her group or its members. Stonex said he didn't know how to recruit for a chapter and never did.

He said Forde called him on the day of the attack while he was visiting Arizona and asked him to bring bandages to an Arivaca home because Bush had been wounded. Stonex said it appeared Bush had a relatively minor gunshot wound, which he treated.

He said Forde and Bush told him Bush been wounded by a smuggler who shot at him while the group were patrolling the desert.

Stonex said he didn't suspect that might not be the case until was contacted by a deputy on Saturday about their alleged involvement in the crime.

The woman took part in an armed robbery that resulted in two dead, one of them a young child. That pretty much settles the debate on whether or not she is a bad person in my book.

The view that all people in one party are bad may be some kind of "ism," but it's not racism!

We really need to try to understand the meaning of the words we use so freely to disparage or to otherwise make a point.

Saying all black people are bad, simply because of the color of their skin, is racism. The person who says this is a racist.

Yet, saying that all Republicans are bad - while it may be a stupid thing to say - is not a racist thing to say!

And yet they knock Janet Napolitano's report , initiated by the Bush Administration before its end, that told of a caveat against right wing violent extremism, and the right wing got all upset about the report and then it all came true with the recent spate of hate crimes by the right wing.

Janet is weak for falling for the right wing's false charges. They will never respect her for it. She should be replaced.

Ok I would like to say this! THERE WERE 6000 MURDERS ALONG THE UNITED STATES MEXICAN BORDERS! MOST ON THE MEXICO SIDE! ALL WERE GANG RELATED. During 2008, the narco-war left an historic record of 5,630 execution murders in Mexico, according to El Universal's count. In the past four years, 12,061 people have died at the hands of organized crime, 46.5% of them in this past year. Multi-executions characterized 2008. In August, a dozen decapitated bodies with signs of torture were discovered stacked in a pile in the state of Yucatan. In September, 24 bodies were discovered in a nature park near Mexico City, all with coup de grace shots to the head.

"When did you get those rights to decide who was legal or illegal?"
That would have been in 1787 when The US Constitution and the US government was established to operate under that Constitution.
As the government of the United States, it has the right to secure our borders and determine who is here legally or not.
If the native Americans wish to pill out of tall of the treaties that have been signed in the last 225 years and refight the wars with the US Army, I'm sure this question could be settled once and for all.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:29 AM on 06/14/2009

I find it interesting that when something like this happens, liberals are quick to paint a wide brush calling all membersof an organization like the Minutemen "criminals".

Yet, at the same time, it is wrong to profile Muslim extremists, or anarchists, or terrorists.

And when a loony on the left goes out and commits a crime, it is a random incident.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:34 AM on 06/14/2009

Bah, they arrested the wrong Bush!

Can we get the motivations of the group in their own words? The Mexican woman survived the attack? How does Shawna Forde deny being there when there is a first-hand eye witness? Is my tax dollar going to pay for the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism?

The hallmark of justice in our great country is that you are innocent until proven guilty regardless of the political ideologies held by those involved. The journalism on this story could be a little tighter. Being 'allegedly' guilty of a crime is the same as being innocent of it.

What are you doing with a 9-year old girl while running drugs? We're probably better off without all of them, but what are you doing putting an innocent 9-year old kid in a cross fire? What are you doing shooting at her? Should have left that kid with the mother, who I assume wasn't the woman mentioned in the story because its not mentioned.

The Flores family was attacked in their own home. The wounded woman is identified in the story as the wife and mother of the murder victims. She is an American. There is no mention of a "Mexican woman" in the story.

Minuteman defenders,
Jim Gilchrist letter

Dear Readers,

I talked to Shawna Forde yesterday about the story written by journalist Scott North of the Everett Herald and she opined that the newspaper story was reasonably fair and balanced and covered most aspects of her life since she was born.

Forde and I both think the newspaper did exactly what it is supposed to do: report facts based on investigation and interrogatories. The story is neither a “hit piece” against Forde, nor a supportive propaganda piece. Simply, it is newspaper reporting at its best and within the professional canons of journalism.

Despite Shawna Forde’s checkered past, here is a woman who really has been a “victim” throughout her life, perhaps willingly, perhaps unwillingly. To have come through the trials and uncertainties of adolescence and young adulthood with odds stacked against you, and to have overcome those odds, is a statement of her willingness to ultimately do the right thing.

....(cut to meet Huffpo length)...
In my experience with Ms. Forde I conclude that she is no whiner. She is a stoic struggler who has chosen to put country, community, and a yearning for a civilized society ahead of avarice and self-glorifying ego.

The Minuteman Project is proud to be a supporter of Shawna Forde’s Minutemen(women) American Defense (M.A.D.)

Jim Gilchrist, Founder and President, The Minuteman Project, Inc.

Businesses and individuals who hire illegal aliens would be my guess.

Apparently, others would say they are encouraged by liberals who advocate for a sane gun control policy.

These lunatics are apolitical and are not "right" or "left" wing.

They tend to be attracted to the Republican party's claim of "no taxes" which is one of their major issues. They do not think they should pay taxes because they do not support the government, regardless which party is in power.

Right wing hate radio is their primary source of inspiration, particularly people like Sean Hamitup with his "conservative underground in exile" gibberish. They love thinking of themselves as the next George Washington, leading the continental army against the mighty British.

They are genuinely lunatics and they should all be disarmed as quickly as possible. If anyone is not fit to own firearms, it is some delusional lunatic who thinks it's 1776 and the "British are coming."
