UNITED NATIONS — Former U.S. President Bill Clinton said Monday that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's tough terms for a Palestinian peace deal are just the opening moves in a drama that will have a few more acts.

Clinton said it was a good thing that Netanyahu, who leads a hardline coalition, went on the record in support of "any sort of two-state solution."

A week after President Barack Obama addressed the Muslim world and strongly reiterated U.S. backing for independent Israeli and Palestinian states living side by side in peace, Netanyahu endorsed Sunday an independent Palestinian state beside Israel for the first time.

Netanyahu had previously refused to agree to negotiate a two-state solution, reversing the position of the previous Israeli government, which backed the road map to Mideast peace unveiled by the United Nations, the United States, the European Union and Russia in 2003.

But Netanyahu attached conditions that were immediately rejected by the Palestinians _ including recognition of Israel as the Jewish state, essentially means Palestinians refugees must give up their goal of returning to Israel. He insisted that a Palestinian state be demilitarized, and demanded that Jerusalem remain the capital of Israel. He also refused to freeze Israeli settlements in the West Bank, as the U.S. is demanding.

"Based on my experience with Mr. Netanyahu, he did what he thought he had to do to keep the ball rolling and not completely alienate the United States initiative," Clinton told reporters at the end of a news conference on his new role as the U.N. special advisor on Haiti.

"This is the opening play," he said. "This is his response to the Obama administration's first move."

"It's just the beginning, and it's a drama that will have a few more acts," Clinton said.

Reporters burst into laughter when Clinton said he hadn't gotten his talking points from the U.S. State Department and was speaking only for himself. His wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton, is secretary of state.

Clinton, as president, brokered Israeli-Palestinian peace talks in Maryland in 1998, at Camp David in July 2000, and in Taba, Egypt, in January 2001 _ all to no avail.

He said Netanyahu's proposal on Sunday was "completely unacceptable" to the Fatah-led Palestinian government, which controls the West Bank and would not lead the rival Hamas faction, which controls the Gaza Strip, "to give up violence and try to join the coalition government."

Israeli and Palestinian politics are also "more fractured" than they were during his presidency from 1993 to 2001, Clinton said. "So we're a long way from where we need to be," he said.

On the other hand, the Saudi peace initiative proposed by King Abdullah in 2002 and relaunched in 2007 "has the support of the entire Arab world _ save Syria _ and other Muslim countries."

It offers pan-Arab recognition of Israel in exchange for the return of Arab lands captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war.

Clinton said Obama, his secretary of state, and Mideast envoy George Mitchell "are basically taking the right position in trying to work through this in the right way."

"What would have been a disaster is if Netanyahu had not endorsed the possibility of a two-state solution," Clinton said.

There are many knowledgeable posters in this thread and your comments are very informative. Is there a group or forum in which similarly knowledgeable people propose and debate possible solutions that assume the current reality in Israel/Palestine (current factions, prevailing sentiments (if any), the settlements as they stand, the pulse in Jerusalem, etc.?). I for one would like to learn more about what the political realities are for the players -- and what the more progressive Palestinian and Israeli elements would propose to address those realities.

Aside from Bush II, Clinton is the WORST president we've had on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. After Oslo, he allowed Israel to continue expanding settlements without a word; and then just as he was leaving office -- amidst a sea of personal scandal -- he quickly put together the Camp David summit (at the behest of Barak). He was the most pro-Israel president we've ever had. And for him to say this is "just an opening act" on the part of Netanyahu demeans the plight of Palestinians. This is not a play, or a movie, or a game. If the Palestinians countered Barak's offer with, "we would like to recover the remaining 78% of historical Palestine, land that is rightfully ours" -- would that be and "opening act" too?

I have to agree. And the ironic thing is that Clinton despises Netanyahu and what the man stands for -- but humors him because it's a vital part of keeping his own presidential legacy intact.

Obviously, this buffoon will never shut up, or resist a camera and microphone.

He wasted his second term dragging the nation through the Lewinsky affair, which he could have ended on day two by admitting what the blue dress made him admit, after perjuring himself, eventually.

Like an unprepared and perpetually late undergraduate, Clinton threw together Middle East peace talks that collapsed, creating more strife and death in its wake. No one but an inveterate self-promoter would want anyone to remember that failure, but this guy can't grasp the utter absurdity of his ego-driven statements.

Carter, who actually produced a peace agreement, has earned the right to voice his opinion on these matters, Clinton has not.

And let's not forget that Clinton's administration started the deregulatory wave that eventually sank the economy.

Let's just hope Hillary can arm-twist him into silence from now on.

After the admirable backbone of Baker and Bush I against the Israelis and AIPAC,
Bill Clinton started us down the road to total subservience to AIPAC and the neocons which eventuated in the incredibly stupid proxy war for Likud Israel the neocons fought with their ventriloquist's dummy Bush II. Bill Clinton's presidency was the prelude to disaster in Iraq AND the gutting of the economy through the banking de-regulation he jump-started. He's the architect of the disastrous messes Obama's having to clean up. No wonder Bill hated Obama on sight. Bill may not be the genius he thinks he is, but at least he's smart enough to know the way Obama will make his own administration look even weaker than it already did. Bill was the greatest Slick Willie con artist ever to win the White House, which is, of course, saying a lot.

Indeed. You could say that Bush Sr. was the first Israel-independent president since Eisenhower, who pushed the Israelis, French and British off the Suez Canal in 1956.

There was an opportunity lost! The US had a chance to demonstrate its anti-colonialist credentials and take the side of an emerging nation. After Truman's historic blunder of recognizing Israel, we could have started down a more progressive path.

Just think -- no Vietnam war.

But the Cold War set us on the wrong path, and the USSR got to be the champion of the developing, former colonial world. Sadly, the Soviets were thoroughly cynical -- they referred to weapon versions they sold to developing nations as "monkey models."

How ironic, we armed the Taliban to bleed the Russians, and we got 911 in return.

And our rapacious corporations and bought-off politicians were happy to demonize every Latin American revolutionary as a Russian tool. Hey, why let these people liberate themselves when we can make so much money doing sweetheart deals with their ruling classes?

I could go on, but this will turn into a rant.

So only someone who has "actually produced a peace agreement" has the right to voice their opinion on these matters?

See if you can spot the irony in your diatribe.

Any idiot has the right to any opinion. Whether we pay attention or not is another ting. And producing a peace agreement rather than a lot of blather counts with me.

What would happen if those opposed to Israel joined together and exercised enough influence in the US to nullify the influence of those who support Israel in US politics and policies?

The organization would be banned by the US government and its leaders charged with a hate crime. By hiding behind religion, Israel has effectively nullified the influence of any opposition.

The tide is permanently turning against AIPAC and Likud in the US. J St. is just one of many liberal Jewish organizations working to blunt the power of AIPAC within the Jewish community itself. And the American public at large has finally awakened to the disastrous effects of AIPAC on our country and its politics. The public realizes full well that the Iraq fiasco was entirely caused by the neocons and the politics of AIPAC, which had effectively bought not just the Bush White House (as well as the Clinton and Reagan White Houses before it) but also the Congress as well. Jane Harmon's connection with the Israeli spy was not lost on Americans either. Americans are finally figuring out that AIPAC has done its best to buy our entire government for Likud. Americans are also finally figuring out that the actual VOTES of conservative Jews in America (a minority even withint the Jewish community) are literally minuscule, absolutely insignificant. Public opinion is turning STRONGLY against Netanyahu and his Israel and their American supporters. It's hard to imagine anything that turns things around for AIPAC. AIPAC was rightly terrified by Obama's candidacy, because they shrewdly foresaw that it potentially meant the end of AIPAC's control of the White House with campaign contributions, since Obama could outraised AIPAC on the Net at will, as he did. Obama's therefore the first President since Bush I who's capable of being an honest broker. MItchell can and will be his James Baker.

Introducing a new Palestinian State as an apartheid state is not a good introduction. It show his racist attitude towards Palestine and gross disrespect toward thinking people of the world.

Whether Bill Clinton was scripted by Hillary or not, shouldn't he just BE QUIET? Could Middle Eastern relations be any more volitile? Might his words be misunderstood? Do we need Bill and his ego pontificating on Middle Eastern negotiations?

President Obama made te dramatic gesture of speaking directly and honestly to the Muslim world, openning a prospect for dialoague that has been badly stalled for years. Bill Clinton cannot stand it, and MUST get into the spotlight and headlines. Enough of him.

The right wing Zionists are masters of manipulation. Netanyahu is just playing a game while millions of Palestinians continue to suffer. The way to know if a person is an honest broker is to ask if they use the same standards for themselves as they use on others. Does Netanyahu insist that Israel and the U.S. should be demilitarized? Does he insist on the U.S. declaring it must accept only one narrow category of religious or ethnic people? Does he insist that other countries should ignore international laws like no settlements, no war crimes, and no collective punishment of civilians in the form of blockades?

The only way to bring justice to Israel is the way that worked on South Africa-the pocketbook. We must boycott, divest, and sanction any business or politician that benefits from the occupation of Palestine. Start with Starbucks, Motorola, Caterpillar and most U.S. politicians. Stop sending $7 million a day of taxpayer money to feed the Israeli war machine. Demand justice for all the Palestinians who had their homes and land stolen from Israel.Support the current UN investigation of war crimes in Gaza and end the illegal blockade of Gaza citizens.

Wow, your ignorance of world history is mind-boggling. First, stop the Jimmy Carter nonsense of apartheid. There is no such thing in Israel, even the President of the United States says so. Second, I don't know what occupation you're talking about, seeing how the very second Israel was declared a sovereign nation, it was attacked on all sides by its Arab neighbors (by the way defeating them all.)

I don't see you advocating for the peaceful disintegration of Hamas, which by any means is a true terrorist organization. If you want to know why there is a blockade, simply look to Hamas. The 7,000 rockets that were flung into Israel are 7,000 reasons why there is so much hardship in Gaza. But apparently, you're too caught up in anti-Zionist rhetoric to understand what is going on.

Why aren't you calling on Jordan, Syria, Egypt, or Lebanon to absorb the so-called refugees? Since all those countries share the same ethnic background, shouldn't they accept the Palestinians in Gaza or the West Bank? Alas, no. But your ilk never place the blame on those countries for their reckless behavior, only that Israel is refusing passage for its own sinister reasons.

The why wouldn't the Palestinian state want to be demilitarized? With an alliance with Israel, the true military power in the region, the Palestinians would be well protected. But I suppose, you're too myopic to see this.

Learn the true facts on history.
