Craig Ferguson Announces Himself As New King Of Late Night TV (VIDEO)

Huffington Post   First Posted: 7/16/09 Updated: 5/25/11

Craig Ferguson

Last week NBC issued a press release declaring Conan O'Brien "The New King of Late Night." Craig Ferguson was either pissed or giddy about this (or maybe both) and opened his show with "royal" music, announcing himself the "king of late night TV."

"You're like 'Craig many many people get more viewers than you, lots of people in late night, nearly everybody in late night gets more viewers than you. How can you be the king of late night?' Because I have a plan. 'What's your plan, Craig?' I put out a press release!"

Craig, who used to be up against Conan when he hosted "Late Night," proceeded to mock NBC's press release directly before moving on to a humorous royal sex fantasy.

I'd boy your majesty but I don't want to get your point in my eye.

Craig Ferguson is the funniest in late night television! Letterman is good for the traditional late night format, but Ferguson has that zany, off the wall, comedic style that we "late nighter" appreciate.

Craig rules! He kinda reminds me of Letterman back in the day. Dave rocks, but Craig is who I stay up for.

I've never really given Craig a chance until I saw a few episode's lately...and the man is downright hilarious.
His hyper-witty, "I-don't-give-a-f*ck" attitude is refreshing for late night talk shows...it's the way late night TV is supposed to be.

I totally agree. He's like, he's like punk music among family friendly pop, and I like family friendly pop, but sometimes you want to let it fly, hard and fast. He's like Monty Python, among Bill Cosbys, and I like Bill Cosby, but sometimes you need to uncork civility and drop your pants. LOL He's like a Dr. Seuss, among Walt Disneys, and I used to like Disney a lot more, but sometimes you need the unusual, the creative, and the odd to express life. He's a little rough around the edges, isn't afraid to be or look ridiculous, and despite being born in Scotland, really does love America. You can tell it when he talks about it and getting his citizenship.

His humility is apparent both in how he acts and what he says. And he manages, like any good comedian, to bring humor out in things you wouldn't expect...like this, which is so typical of him:

(from Wikipedia), "A recovering alcoholic, Ferguson has been sober since February 18, 1992. He said he had considered committing suicide on Christmas Day 1991, but when offered a drink by a friend, Tommy the Irishman, for celebrating the holiday, he forgot to jump off Tower Bridge in London as he had planned." LOL

(C'mon and bring it on down)

I've been watching his show for years and have no intention of stopping now. Jimmy who? (insert your choice here).

He is brilliant and THE heir to Dave's throne. If you're not watching him, you should.

I saw the Craig Ferguson show taped live a couple of weeks ago and he was hella funny in studio. He also seemed like a nice guy. He was much funnier than Conan. David Letterman and Craig Ferguson are the best!
09:52 PM on 06/15/2009
Conan WHOOOOO? it's Letterman then Ferguson for me. Craig Ferguson is HILARIOUS, Authentic and smart. Conan is borrrrrrrring, a big mistake to have plopped him into Johnny Carson's seat..........Tonight Show will never be The Conan Show. What WAS NBC thinking?????? It's CBS every night for me........David and Craig are THE BEST!!!!!

Why is this news? Craig HAS BEEN the KING of Late Night Television for four years.....or is it five?

This guy is brilliant. He always makes me laughs.

My fav is his skit "Late Nite with Prince Charles" bit. Say just who exactly is that beefeater that stands next to him? Just wondering...........
09:46 PM on 06/15/2009
He's had several "guards" standing alongside his hysterical Prince Charles. Ferguson does everything he can to try to make the guard crack a smile. I saw one smile once...barely. There is NO ONE funnier than Craig Ferguson on late night television. Watch for one week. You'll be hooked. And he does it all with no budget, and no writers. Love the Ferguson...the King of Late-Night. Woot! Woot!
