Dick Van Dyke Memoir Planned

NEW YORK — Cue the theme music: Dick Van Dyke is writing a memoir.

The star of "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and such films as "Mary Poppins" and "Bye, Bye Birdie" will tell of his long career in a memoir scheduled to be published in the fall of 2010 by Harmony Books, which announced the release Monday.

The 83-year-old Van Dyke is also known for the TV series "Diagnosis: Murder" and for the movies "Night at the Museum" and "Curious George."

Van Dyke lived in Carefree while producing and starring in "The New Dick Van Dyke Show" in 1971.

The book is currently untitled and financial terms were not disclosed. Harmony Books is an imprint of Random House Inc.

I had the pleasure of meeting him years ago when he came to visit his son who had just been elected District Attorney in the area in which I lived. He was nice, funny and totally down to earth. I really have a great deal of respect for him as a person and certainly as a performer. In fact, Diagnosis Murder is an all-time favorite! When I find a person who is exceptionnal, I love to learn how they got that way. Can't wait to read this book!

When Mary Tyler Moore wrote her memoir and couldn't remember where her own son was buried, I had second thoughts about her as a person. It amazes me how people can dearly love animals but are bad parents.

Yeah, that's what her ex-husband said. He said she called him up because she couldn't remember where he was buried when she was writing her memoir. He said she was a terrible mother too. When I see her supporting PETA and animals I can't help but think if she had just put the same effort into her parenting skills.

It always surprises me that the censors allowed him to have that name. Didn't they notice what it sounds like?

Dick is a wonderful person! I was lucky enough to communicate with his MySpace identity when he recently ran for President with Steve Guttenberg - what fun! On my radio show with Radio Free Phoenix dot com, I followed his campaign zeppelin all over the U.S.A. He has a fantastic sense of humor. Can't wait to read his book!
