Bohn
Marvin Bohn circa 2007

The Huffington Post caught up with Marvin Bohn sitting on his porch in Yellow Springs, Ohio after a day of thunderstorms. He'd just come back from the movies. We'd heard he was out of a job.

I went through 26 weeks of unemployment benefits. Now I'm on the 13-week extension. I've been looking for work but not finding any. I ran the dining services for Antioch College in Ohio. Antioch closed June of last year. Good jobs in food service are hard to find.

At this moment I've already dropped COBRA. It was costing $597 a month. I just couldn't afford it. I take 11 medications, which I've gotten my doctor to put what he could on generics. But I'm still taking Plavix and Byetta.

In Springfield I worked as an executive chef, 80 hours a week. You could pretty much figure that from the Monday prior to Thanksgiving to New Year's Day I'd have no day off. So many banquets.

Do you live with family?

I'm a single person. I had taken care of my mother for 23 years. She passed away two years ago. She'd gotten to the point it was probably better.

I need to hopefully get a job that has benefits. When I've talked to insurance companies, what they want to charge you is phenomenal -- anywhere from $600 to a $1,000 a month. Some of them won't even quote me. I'm a type II diabetic. I've had two heart attacks, open-heart surgery, congestive heart failure. I've got a defibrillator in my chest. The same device that Dick Cheney has. It's the only thing he and I have in common.

How old are you?

Story continues below
advertisement

There are nice people out there who say I don't look 57. I look in the mirror. I look 57.

Looking for work?

I did talk to a person last week with a local fast food chain. A local franchise. The job was $25,000 a year, on the clock 45 hours a week. He asked what I was making on unemployment. I told him $365. He just looked at me and said, "That's ridiculous that you make so much."

What fast food chain?

Burger King. They didn't offer me the job. They'd set up 11 interviews, the largest number they'd had for an assistant manager position.

What's your day like, usually?

Most days I get up in the morning, get on the computer, and look for want ads. Craigslist, Monster, Yahoo. I read the Dayton daily news, I check the Cincinnati paper, the Columbus paper. Trying to find if there's anything out there. If there is, I send in a resume. I basically stopped going out and knocking on doors.

Usually that's how I spend my morning. I will take a walk in the afternoon - today because of the thunderstorms I decided to go see a movie. I saw "Up." I love animation. It was just excellent. Every time I see an animated movie it's so much better than last time.

How did your heart problems develop?

My grandfather had a series of strokes. My father died of a heart attack at age 57, my brother died of heart attack at age 50. My mother had a heart attack, open heart surgery. My older sister died of liver cancer. It spread from her colon. I'm sure it's genetics. My cholesterol is under control, but the doctors will tell you, eating the wrong things, not getting exercise. But I was working 80 hours a week.

When I had my initial heart attack, I was living in Springfield and they were supposed to take me to the community hospital. My insurance company would not OK surgery at that hospital.

I had an IV in me, a pump to strengthen my heart, and an external pacemaker. They came up and told me the insurance company said I would have to pay the deductible. It was over $6,000, I think. Since they would not provide transportation and I would have to wait for the doctors to release me so I could go home, then eventually check into the other hospital, we just simply chose to go ahead and pay the extra amount of money. Four more weeks or five more weeks off work. How much money does that cost?

I always get a little t'd off when they talk about how government is going to tell you what doctors you're going to see. Insurance companies are doing that now.

Your house is worth $125,000 but you paid $250,000 don"t worry with "Mark-To-Market" Neutered you can say whatever you want to about your home value and no one can refute you!
Now when you go in for a loan, simply declare the house is worth $300,000 and along with your clean "ON-THE-BOOKS Balance Sheet" with no visible other debts means you get money from the FED at 1% interest or maybe less!
Why can"t this world be true for ALL AMERICANS like it is for Wall Street?
We do not own Congress and they DO using ill-gotten FUNDS!
Are the Wall Street Banks really healthy? With "OFF-THE-BOOKS" accounting and "MARK-TO-MARKET" Neutered who knows what the truth is!

You know what, just listening to all these people who are educated on this blogg and out of work is just mind boggling, we really need to help these people their living off of credit cards and ect... how are we going to be able to stop more tent cities from coming up all over america. Look there are a lot of you out there that are buisness owners and a lot of you need good teachers help these people out no one should be out of a job 3yrs before they can find one that is crazy. We need to stop the us four and no more syndrome and get some people working. Also one may need to change their profession, the medical field is growing and you may need to move and network with people and don't burn bridges you never know who knows who and may just be the person who can help you. My cousin went back to school for nursing and graduated and has been working ever since she graduated last year.

Thank you for writing this. There are obviously lots of us out here and it's scary. I've lost my COBRA, business, savings and apartment & moved in with a friend (I'm 57 too). Because the physical work I've done most of my life, I have layers of debilitating physical problems. I've been out of the workforce and don't know computer programs, can't do what I have in the past, so I want to go back to school. But I am constantly worried about my health issues and how they will be dealt with now that I've have no insurance.
It's time this country take care of the health care problem and include everyone. To die of preventable diseases is disgusting.

I was out of work for three years during the dot-com debicle. Stayed alive substitute teaching and by going back to school and living on student loans. Now, I've been out of work since October. I can't really say how I feel about it because I'll get on somebody's or other's list. That's just America for you.

I was recently fired from my job as a Substitute teacher for an Adult High School in Las Vegas. My wrongdoing? I actually gave "straight talk" advice to a student who was pregnant with her second child and still hadn't completed a GED in order to keep her welfare benefits. Upon seeking advice she asked me for a private conference. I've taught ESL overseas in both South Korea and Japan for more than 7 years. She asked for advice and I told her - 1) The use of condoms, 2) the use of abstinence, and 3) simply not engaging in condomless sex. She ranted and raved to the principals of the Adult High School and said that I was sexually harassing her. So, now, I'm almost at the tipping point for my major credit cards and I was denied unemployment benefits from the Clark County School District for merely giving "solicited" advice to a student wondering how she could complete her GED requirements so that she could continue to receive welfare benefits. Okay, this is not a 17 or 18 year-old - this is a 23 year-old single mother. The education system is America is completely messed up when a teacher gets called on the carpet for giving advice and then getting fired for "misconduct". Thank goodness that I had the wherewithal to move and find better employment. I'm still looking but I'm sure I'll find something - even if it means working at 7-11.

Good for you. Not good that you lost your job, but good for you. I don't see the people that don't want sex ed to be taught to teenagers stepping up and taking in foster children that came from homes where they were abused and unwanted. I don't see those people stepping up and helping those woman/girls after they give birth. And I don't see most of them stepping up and adopting a child.

This notion of my child won't do that because I told them not to is laughable. I say if they are a teenager they will pretty much do whatever you tell them not to do. It's called growth and development. Maybe some of those parents should read a couple of those books. Not all teens will use the resources that you provide for them just as all adults don't, but if you have helped one person that is better than helping no one.

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. Unfortunately it's very typical. The "system" in America is broken and tends to reward those who want to get around the rules. It should reward and assist those who truly want to better their lives, and the lives of their children. That's what you were trying to tell the student about, and of course she didn't want to hear it. Good luck to you in your future and keep up the straight talk!

According to insurance, you now will have a preexisting condition. I don't know of an insurance company that will cover anything that's preexisting for a year and then only when a person is "symptom free." If you're out of work, out of unemployment, out of insurance and add in over 45-ish, you're pretty much screwed.

Yea, in those cases they make you pay extra rates as if you are covered for the problem for that time interval but you get no benefit or coverage for it.

The insurance companies write the rules and own the lawmakers so that's what you get.

American leadership has decided that they only care about young workers that can work hard for low pay. Everyone else is out.

Marvin,

I feel your pain, although I am lucky to have no real health problems (so far).

I'm going on a year unemployed, too, and I'm a highly skilled high-tech software engineer with a EE degree. They still bring in Indians and Chinese to do the job that I would normally do. Then the industry still says they can't get enough of 'em.

I can't leave town because I have to care for an elderly mother. So I'm a prisoner.

The Bu$h tax cuts did not stimulate the economy. Just like they always don't.

Good luck to you and hope you find something soon.

I have empathy for this man on 2 points: The unemployment and medical. However, they are usually synonymous with one another. No one should go without proper medical care with insurance, without insurance, employed or unemployed. Who can say that one's life is more important than another? Co-payments for any medical care should go based on ones income at that time, not last year's tax forms. No one should be forced to transfer medical facilities based on $$$$$ and $$$$$ only. That is wrong and inhumane.

I see person after person on here empathizing with this gentleman because of his lack of work and financial stasis. People don't think he should have to work at BK or for low wages, no benefits, or little benefits and rightfully so. People think he should make better money because when he makes better money with better benefits we may all make better wages with better benefits.

Well, I have a couple of questions then: Why doesn't anyone feel this way about the Auto Workers, Suppliers or related fields? Why do people feel they should work for next to nothing? Why do people not care they have lost half of their health care benefits? Why don't people care that seniors that are retired from the auto industry have lost all of their vision and dental care? Why don't people care that seniors must now pay thousands out of their own pockets for co-pays and medication they can not afford?

Just wondering........

Because people love to see other people hurting! This is what apparently we have turned into. The Toyota Republicans can't get the wage or the benefits so they want no one to have them. The bright red states all allowed the "right to work" to come in and destroy theyre livelihoods and so they want it for all.

We should be working with one another to better ourselves, work together for true Democracy and a proporous country. This is why we need unions and to end pay to play politics.

My question, WHY CANT WE? Why cant we help each other to change the corporatism we all suffer? Out of work in the upper midwest.

I call them the Toyota Republicans. They cant have it so they want no one else to have it. Good wages and benefits! Rather than work together to proper, they work against us! Deep red states are full of them.

Thank you. It's nice to hear there are some out there with reason, sensibility and compassion for ALL.

I have told "these" people that I would not wish them to lose their job. I would not wish them to decrease their wages and lose half or all of their health care. I have told "those" people I want them to have better pay, good health care, health and safety in the workplace, etc. I am even willing to pay a couple of extra bucks for a U.S. made product, if there is such a thing anymore.

What is wrong with Americans for Americans? What is wrong with saving your family (Americans) from a burning house before you save your neighbors (foreign countries)? If it were our biological family we would save them first before others.

What's wrong with FAIR TRADE verses "Free", "Unbalanced", "Trade Dumping" Trade that hurts no no other than OUR COUNTRY, OUR FELLOW AMERICANS, OUR NEIGHBORS THAT HAVE NO JOBS OR HEALTH CARE???? What is wrong with people?

And why are dental services not covered for seniors? My mom had to beg my brother (stingy, rich, republican) for money for a set of dentures when her teeth were falling out. (I would have paid for them if I could at the time.) If ever a demo of people needed dental coverage, it is the elderly.

Why do we treat the aged and the poor so badly in this country?

Hey they have a program calle kiva, which donors give to people who want to start their own buisness and then the person you select will repay you, how about donations for people who need help with their medication I sure would not mind giving to that, we could have it where the giving could be any amount you can give $2,$5, $10,ect..... so that people like this man won't have to suffer while their looking for work, they can continue getting their meds.

The people that didn't play by the rules chronic drug addicts on welfare, are costing the country huge amounts of tax dollars, they excellent health benefits, including dental, paid re-hab 10 or 12 times is not unusual. This needs to be investigated.
I haven't had dental since I retired.

get your priorities right. what these people cost is a pittance compared to the profits the insurance companies make.

You're buying into the right wing lies and talking points; our healthcare problems have not been cause by "chronic drug addicts (unless you mean like Rush Limbaugh) on welfare". Our healthcare costs are completely uncontrolled and the healthcare-health insurance INDUSTRY in this country is stictly about making money and mitigating losses for shareholders. It is not about the health or welfare of the average American. Do you know how many WORKING, MIDDLE CLASS AMERICANS are without health insurance, or have insurance that basically pays nothing??? The sooner people stop buying into those lies and get involved in forcing change the sooner we will all benefit.

My heart goes out to each and everyone of you, whether you've been out of work for a year or 4 or 5.
I really wish there was some way for us to march on Washington or to pigeonhole our Congressman or Senator. Maybe if enough of us did something would happen faster.

As to my own story..it's been almost 4 years..thank God for family! At first I thought, hey I've been in management and it shouldn't be too hard, but I was wrong.Talk about Age Discrimination? That's a laugh and a half:) Fact is even temp agencies don't want us middle aged guys....Now I'm sorry that I didn't start a class action suit against Panasonic..it would have been worth it.

Apart from that, I'm glad I have my faith, I dunno what folks do who don't have it.

I have learned a few things though...Like you end up here for a reason. Not because you did anything wrong but because God is giving you a chance to do something, like what happened to my cousin Barb...

Barb had been a Commander in the Navy. Served a lot of time, got into something else and adopted a kid from Central America. She moved back to suburban Cincinnati...home. So did her sister Peggy from Bowling Green, KY...

Later Barb was diagnosed with Cancer and now the entire family was able to help her as well as long distance Aunts, Uncles & Cousins.

I am a 32 year old single mother of one child- highly educated and I've been in career transition for a year. I've just celebrated my year anniversary on June 10th. I know that my situation is much like the million of voices in America. For the first time in my life, I feel a squeeze and some people (repubs) could care less if people are put back to work. The more people out of work only supports their efforts to prove that Obama's view for hope and prosperity for America.... FAILS! in order to prove a point that under Bush-despite screwed up tactics and runaway banking/bankers- you're were better off than the new administration which seeks all Americans to succeed.

I've gone on several interviews and the world is much different now than 7 years ago. Employers are more stringent with their postings and interview process. Due to my situation, I've sought mental counseling and experienced physical problems. My unemployment benefits are just about up- I've passed my 26 weeks of benefits and now on my extension with a couple of weeks pending. I am scared that I will not be able to land a job and my daughter will suffer. We currently reside with my parents, but I want the opportunity to raise my daughter without fear as to what's around the corner. I hope what I have in the pike works out...all I have is my faith in God!

I feel sorry for everyone who is out of a job, because I've been there, done that, a few times even with 2 kids to support. Luckily, I have no real health problems not related to age, but no one wants a 68 yr old, even as a cashier; younger people (even in their 40s or 50s) are taking those jobs. I'd love to get more money to supplement my SS check, but it's impossible (and I'm not in the high bracket). Even after working 50 years, it's a pittance in this day and age. My "career" was basically over in my 50s and I had to resort to even lower paying jobs. So, SAVE if you can--I couldn't, not on a secretary's pay or later in life. Sometimes some people never get a break, regardless of how hard they work. I suspect there are a lot of people out there with nothing to fall back on, losing their homes, every possession, and I'm afraid it's going to get worse, because a lot of jobs will not be coming back.
