I'm hoping that Obama's one condition that he'll pay California is that he'll pay it only if Arnold resigns for gross incompetence.
I'm going to guess that this thread is full of "Patriotic Americans" who are hoping we Californians suffer and it's all our fault.
Folks, your entire nation is broke. We're suffering because Bush and his energy buddies hit us first in 2001 for anywhere between $30-80 billion, nobody is really sure. Nobody is sure because for some reason, journalists don't seem interested in knowing what happened to all that money, between $30-80 billion, though this year's deficit was only $42 billion, and now has been knocked down to $24 billion. You think that money would have covered us? Nobody is talking about what happened to all that money which was paid almost entirely by the state and municipalities (few people saw their energy bills increase by 2500%, which is pretty much what the state had to deal with). So we'll just keep blaming illegals, and the media will keep that 2001 energy heist buried like it is. I'd love to see one major news source do an article on what happened to that money, and what Arnold did about it (he dropped the lawsuits).
These posts here on HP, showing so much hate for one state - the most populous in the entire nation - make me fear for the entire US. If so many Americans can smile and laugh about millions of kids in their own nation getting tossed off healthcare, 1.3 million poor Californians with no assistance (how much does it cost? $1 billion?), teachers to be laid off, tens of thousands of jobs lost every month, if you think that's so funny, then I can't say much about being an American. Apparently, when it comes down to it, it doesn't mean squat. This country has turned into a big joke.
geez.. now ahnuld will have to legalize marijuana!
come wiff me iff you vant to liff and survive financially..
yes you cannabiff
The Governator needs to whip both his Republican and Democratic legislators into shape and get a budget passed in Sacramento and not expect his constituents to do the dirty work.
The employees unions need to give in on pay while the Republicans need to get off the "no taxes, no matter what" stance they've held. Arnold has to get them in line or close down all the state's business until everyone feels the pinch and begin to cooperate.
No, Arnold is incompetent and out of his league. He needs to resign immediately.
Arnold won't resign because he has to use his power to keep revenue flowing into the hands of the big money boys who got him elected and own him outright. As for Arnie..he no doubt has been socking his payoffs away in the Caymans ..It is a sick, sad, outrageous mess California is in. Just ask the woman who is sleeping on a blanket in a West Hollywood park..Or the homeless man who waits with his dog outside Trader Joes hoping for someone to spare some change. I gave some money to a homeless woman in front of the Post Office and she looked in my eyes and said, "You have saved my life." And this is happening in what was once the most glorious state in our union. The sun may be shining, but it is raining in our hearts.
What did the Californians expect from an ACTOR? Geez, first a president, then a governor, and a foreigner at that? How is he supposed to know how to run an efficient
state? Tell me. I know he did not learn that in school. But people will always vote for
name recognition rather than someone with real issues. Like people want change but
then they don't want to bother with REAL change! We got that with Obama = let us see
who has more influence on him the lobbyists or the people. My bet is on the first, knowing that ethanol is about to become bigger and more misery for us with it.
Truest statement I've ever read about Arnold here on HP. Fanned!
Please, remind me again, What country is this? We give Israel 3 BILLION + per year, we give Wall St. BILLIONS, we give AIG BILLIONS but we refuse to help one of our own STATES. Keep fooling yourselves about who runs things, WAKE UP PLEASE. Before it is to late.
Do not give california a dime - too many in that state have been suckling at the public purse for too long - declare bankruptcy, throw out the illegals, throw out Boxer and Peloser and try to start afresh
Did you know about this?

and 103 billion for the 2 wars - I say, we are not broke! What is broke will be Medicare and Social Security, the last of the money.
"Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger says he's "happy" illegal immigrants get state services and says they're not to blame for California's $24.3 billion budget gap."
Funny, the word "Illegal" just doesn't compute with policy makers. Maybe if we used harsher words like criminal, lawless, unconstitutional, unlawful or they looked up the word illegal "Prohibited by law".
Well if they are not prohibited as the action above proves, then they are not illegals.
It all becomes clear now.
Arnold should just make a movie and donate the exorbitant Hollywood payouts to save Cali. Apparently it would be a better use of his time.
California's financial crisis is manmade. The 2/3rds requirement that is needed to pass a budget in the legislature means that the Republicans can prevent any budget measures from being passed, and that is exactly what they have done.
The economy as a whole is bad, granted, but the GOP minority in the state legislature has blocked every single attempt to do something to soften the State's problems, and that includes measures proposed by the Republican governor. The GOP is putting political gamesmanship ahead of the welfare of the people.
I'm really disappointed in Arnie and CA Republicans. Where is the pull-yourself-up-by-the-boot-strap mentality? The mission is to cut taxes, entitlements and cut jobs to achieve fiscal responsibility. Don't ask for handouts!
Its welfare if you're poor. its necessary to save America if your rich. Socialize the losses and Privatize the profits. It's the Republican way.
Didn't Palin said that the President will bail out these State, then he will go in and control the people?
"These policymakers continue to watch the situation closely and do not rule out helping the state if its condition significantly deteriorates, a senior administration official said"
They haven't ruled it out. We'll see if they cave on this.
Let see:
$180 Billion for AIG
$90 Billion for Citi
$90 Billion for never-ending wars in Iraq and Afghanistan
and last but not least...
$100 Billion for the IMF (foreign welfare)
But ZILCH for 30 million Americans in California. This somehow doesn't compute.
I gave my neighbor $50 so he could buy groceries for his family. I suppose that obligates me to give anyone needing groceries money.
No, but it does make you a good neighbor :)
Mr Arnold you asked the wrong guy for help, what about Bush?
There's your predicament you waited until Bush left.
$180 billion for AIG and $50 billion for GM.
Why not $20 billion for the entire state of California - nearly 40 million people?
How many untold trillions in guarantees for financial firms (estimates of $11 to $13 trillion plus) and why not $20 billion for California?
Quantitaive Easing (printing of money) to bail out financial firms, $100 billion plus a year for wars and no money for California? A deficit of $2 trillion this year and we cannot afford just 1% more ($20 billion) for California?
This is not fair to Californians and needy people in general.
It's $25B, not $20B. And putting $25B into California is like pumping gas into a tank with huge gash on the bottom. It would be another $25 next year, and the year after that. CA has problems that can't be solved by pumping more money in. Withholding the money would force CA to address those problems instead of hiding from them.
true - let them fix their problems first - free everything for illegals, indeed! Arnie, you are a twit - when did you go dem*crap?
Maybe Californians should have voted in a more capable over seer for their state. Star power doesn't necessarily translate into a great administrator. Just sayin......
They also have to be careful with their money...Find places to cut....Not essential things. Maybe cut law makers salleries...Since they can't get anything done....
No, they can get things done. Calif legislators driving around in taxpayer supplied Cadillacs, that are fixed even if crashed by family members. Let 'em drive cheap economy cars or basic chevy's. If they don't like it, they can resign. After one term, they get to collect a pension. This is insane.
Unfortunately, California needs to learn to live within its means. Bankruptcy is inevitable, and hopefully when that happens, the governor and legislature will do the right thing and all resign.
The people of California need to take state government more seriously. Like a bank account or your job, if you don't you suffer the consequences. Almost all citizens here can't name their legislators. The media are also to blame as none of them cover state issues with any depth if at all, but local tv can show you a car chase for hours.
California needs to repeal their Prop 13....Isn't that the Proposition that capped taxes? Who in their right mind would let the people decide that? At some point taxes have to be raised or services slashed.....Plus they need a legislature that works together not against each other....
HEAR HEAR!
I actually think they should steadily roll it back over 10 years. It's a sad situation, but an outright repeal would shock the system too much. But the whole concept is bad, and if they could amortize a return to normalcy over time, that would alleviate the housing bubble and the state budget problems. In 2011, CA should apply property taxes on 90% of the purchase value, and 10% of the newly assessed value. In 2012, it should be 80/20, and so forth.
