I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Artie Lange

In the first episode, Joe Buck become the butt of his own show's jokes.

Howard Stern regular Artie Lange "hijacked" Joe Buck Live, according to the New York Times' Richard Sandomir.

SEE UPDATE BELOW: HBO WON'T HAVE LANGE BACK!

When Buck, a Fox sportscaster who took over on HBO when Bob Costas signed with the MLB Network, announced that celebrity gossip site TMZ was his favorite website, Lange shot back: "Joe, TMZ is your favorite website? What's your second, suckingcock.com?"

In a move decried as homophobic, Lange then let his wrist fall limp, put on an accent, and said, "I'm on TMZ constantly, did you see what Angelina was wearing today? What the fuck, how about going to a sports website for Christ's sake?"

Lange even admitted to being a homophobe, to which Buck responded, "clearly."

"As a Giants fan, and a well-known homophobic," Lange said, "it's like a white trash gift from god that the fucking Cowboys have a quarterback whose last name rhymes with homo."

Lange then took it to Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo's girlfriend, Jessica Simpson.

"And he's dating a fat chick!" he said. "Jessica Simpson started out looking like Jessica Simpson, now she looks like Chris Farley from those Gap sketches."

Moments later, Lange started knocking Buck's hosting abilities.

"Good segue," Lange said, mocking Buck's attempt to move discussion forward. "You're a regular Bob Costas."

"I wanna be working construction by next Thursday, I hate show business," Lange said.

"You're on your way," Buck replied.

"So are you!" Lange shot back.

Later, as Buck attempted to rush Lange through a story about Buck's father, Lange said, "sorry to ruin your fucking great show."

"I appreciate the apology, because you have," Buck said.

Finally, near the end of the segment, Lange takes out a cigarette and an increasingly earnest Buck yelled at him not to light it.

"If you do that, sir! Sir, you cannot do that," Buck shouted.

"I won't light it," Lange said.

"You think I care about you smoking a cigarette after what you just laid out here?" Buck said, leading Lange to say, "Fuck it, let's do it bro" and light up. "No, don't, please!" Buck said.

"Say what you mean," Lange said back.

Update: HBO has said "never again" to Artie Lange.

The New York Post's Michael Starr reports that HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg has added Lange to his blacklist:

"He can go do as many Howard Stern shows as he likes . . but he will no longer appear on HBO Sports or 'Joe Buck Live,' " HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg told The Post yesterday.

"We don't have any interest in his world."...

"He wasn't who we thought he was," Greenburg said. "We thought we were going to have an entertaining and kind of comical look at sports and celebrity -- but we didn't expect the guy to hijack the segment for his own personal gain."

What makes it seem awkward is that Joe doesn't know how to react to what Artie is saying. Artie is just "busting his balls" which is something he does quite often to about everyone he comes across (except his boss Howard, of course). If Joe had been able to loosen up and roll with it, instead of just trying to pass the ball to the other guests, there wouldn't be any controversy at all. But really, maybe that was the whole idea...

What's the big deal? Lange was the mildly funny lout he always is. It didn't seem to me, however, that he crossed any lines of decorum, at least not on premium cable. Plus, I didn't get the impression Buck was unduly stressed by Lange's routine.

What I think is more interesting is, why does Lange insist on being so disagreeable? Does he really want to come off that way? More than damaging Buck's show, he's doing his own career a disservice. If the impression you create wherever you go, is that nothing and no one deserves your respect, you'll end up a lonely castaway on an ever-shrinking island.

Joe Buck is the worst. Ever since he became soooo shocked and apologetic when Randy Moss (or TO or whoever) pulled the simulated mooning on TV, I refuse to acknowledge the guy. And all of a sudden he's everywhere. I don't care who your father was. Now JoJo Jr. is supreme Fox Sports lackey, Avis hawker, and now this?? I never liked Artie, but I'm glad the show itself blows (didn't watch a second, just reading here). Good riddance Joe.

Artie is not using which is why his rage is so much on the surface. His tenor was a bit intense (as it has been on the Howard Stern Show since he went cold turkey with the help of some ex cop and a therapist howard suggested that artie may or may not really be seing) but he did what he was hired to do on a show that is not G rated, on a channel that's known for shows with "salty" language. After the show, Artie said his fellow guests and the host thanked him for his performance. The fact is - the show itself had no frame, no direction so on one hand, Artie's performance served as a focal point but it was so strong given how lame (and how lame was that???!!!!) the show was. I mean, high school buddies n photos...yawn!!!

Anyone that rips on Joe Buck is good by me. I have to mute FOX every time Buck is calling the Yankees games and turn on the radio. His voice sounds stiff and angry all the time..

Bob Costas is a genuis..HBO was lucky to have him.

Artie Lange saved the show! If it wasn't for him the news would have been how bad Joe Buck Live was! Instead the whole world is talking about it. The Uptight people are indignant and the Cool people thought it was hilarious!

This show has to be the worst produced thig on HBO. Why wouldn't the show's producers dictated to Lange was they wanted. Lange is a blue comic who can work broadcast tv like Letterman an Kimmel. The producers should have told Lange to keep it clean.

It a show on goddamn HBO and nobody expect him not bring his A game! That the channel where George Carlin did all his specials it where Bill Maher is on every Friday night not to mention all the sex, violence and cursing going on the rest of the time. It safe to say that if they had bother to tell Artie that they wanted a wussy Disney performance. He would have oblige like he do every time he goes on Letterman or Conan and the rest of the clean late show.

Artie is a good worker and he know how to work clean when asked for but you give the guy a few minutes on an supposedly uncensored network and you tell him to "bring it" if the show is boring what the hell do you expect him to do? God knows it was very boring until Lange stepped in you should be kissing his feet for having put your pathetic show on the map. My prediction Joe Buck live does not survive the next show because it likely going to be a snooze fest and all the free advertisements they got would be totally waisted when peoples realize how boring the show really was before Artie!

The only thing that could save that show is for HBO to fire Joe Buck hire Artie rename the show Artie Lange Live and ride the controversy like they do for just about every other show on HBO!
