Jon Stewart

Jon Stewart devoted three segments to the Iranian elections and ensuing protests last night. The first had Stewart explaining the context of the story, and calling Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad batshit insane. He then showed a clip of Ahmadinejad saying Iran is the most stable country on Earth, which kind of proves his point.

Stewart then moved on to America's response which included Joe Biden equivocating on the issue, saying he has doubts, the saying he has no comment. Jon took this opportunity to mock the vice president for not understanding that saying one has doubts is a statement.

Jason Jones then reported live from Tehran, calling Stewart an ass for making him go to the embattled nation, and John Oliver proved through a magic screen (a la CNN) that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won fair and square. Apparently he did very well with soccer imams.

I watched this ep last night...I don't have cable so am always a day behind. I had hoped Jon would focus on this issue, and Jon didn't disappoint! I also wanted to mention, I loved the toss at the end when Jon gave Stephen a standing O and said he was proud of him. It was still funny "you sit down and take my applause!" but it was also touching.

On that note I hope Jason Jones is okay and I hope he's going to skew the s**t out of this when he gets back. Waiting for his insights with no small amount of impatience!

Has Joe Biden ever said or done one worthwhile thing?

He's been elected to the Senate and Vice Presidency does that not qualify as worthwhile?

Because it is an internal issue, and none of the UN's business.

"Ah so!" said the proctologist.

So Ahmadinejad is insane...and thus it makes sense for Obama to say he's sit down and talk with him without preconditions? Or even WITH preconditions? Can one negotiate rationally with an insane man--or an insane country?

Actually, when McCain brought that up in the debate (I think it was the second debate) Obama said that Ahmadinejad is not the right person to in the Iranian government to talk to, as it is Ayatollah Khomeini who holds supreme political authority in that nation.

I love watching Jon Stewart...insightful, humorous and scarily closer to real news than any other news outlet out there.

Bribery will bring peace to Iran. An offer of 40 virgins in a Las Vegas penthouse to Ahmadinejad will cause him to defect. But the leaders of North Korea will defect faster if offered a lifetime supply of Opium. Peace is at hand if filled with the right goodies.

You may be on to something ... but ... do the virgins get any say as to their being used as bargaining chips????

Jon Stewart was HILARIOUS. I laughed so hard my side hurt. Despite the seriousness of this issue, he brought laughter to it.

Keep in mind that the Iranian president, whoever he is, has limited power. Khamanei and the Guardian Council (the mullahs) hold the real power, tho Iran is unique in that there is no central government in the country--there are competing spheres of influence.

Completely weak criticism of Biden. Sometimes Jon really stretches to go after this administration in an effort to look even handed.

He goes after the administration frequently, and it has never felt like a stretch. I like our president not so sure about some of the Democrates but they all screw up, and when they do there it is necessarry to point it out. You can like someone most of the time, and still not put up with their bvllshlt. Something my friends both appreciate and hate about me.

I thought it was funny. I, too, had been waiting for Biden to say something bad.
