David Letterman apologized on Monday for making a sexually charged joke about one of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's teenage daughters, as a group of Palin supporters planned a rally demanding the late-night TV show host be fired.

Sigh. There is something very wrong in a scenario where apologies are given to Palin. She has done and said far worse.

Sarah Palin is a lovely woman; her success is achieved on her merits. Say what you want about her, but leave ALL children of politicians out of the public discouse. What would happen if a Republican said something rude and ditasteful about Democrat's children: Chelsea (another lovely young woman); Amy Carter (untouched by public scrutiny), or even Caroline Kennedy (who has thrust herself into the public limelight)?
