Pam Spaulding has published an email detailing just who's coming to the DNC's $1,000 (and up) a head gay fundraiser next week. I suspect those folks are going to be under a lot of pressure to pull out (Andy Towle and David Mixner have already said they're not attending). Pam is asking folks to contact our gay elected leadership in Congress, Barney Frank, Tammy Baldwin and Jared Polis, and ask them why they're still hosting this event. T

Relevant update: DNC proclaims it raised 1 million at fundraiser. Oh really?

The DNC insider:

"[T]he blogs are closer to the truth [on how the Dems plan to handle gay issues] than the party wants us to know. They used the blogs to their advantage during the election, and now they're trying to figure out how to control what's become a nuisance for them. The current method for the fundraiser is by not telling the truth."

Aravosis: "The Democratic party finds you and your civil rights a nuisance."

There have been instances where Black people's comments are being monitored and deleted. Why is this happening? White people can say whatever they want but not Black people?

Here's a thought....Whe you spout idiotic things with no meaning other than hatred and biogtry, some people might find this "abusive." The reason for the Flag as Abusive....this woudl account for your post being removed.

Except that's crap too because I've seen several people make "abusive" comments that are left alone because they're usually in aping the party line.

I was not speaking of mine. Now I did go to the article in question and typed in "agree" and it never went through. It was other Black people. Unlike you I don't make up things to prove points. I verify before I write something. For some reason people cannot understand the concept of expressing an opinion.

All posts are monitored silly.

Why are you using an article on gay rights to ask why Huffington Post is deleting Black people's comments? Answer: You are trying to stir racial hatred between blacks and gays.

Interesting that you know for a fact that white people can say what they want but not black people.

You are just trying to incite hatred and speaking without facts.

Like I've been saying Gays have power they will get their rights in no time and then they too can look down at the AA and Latinos that they left behind if they are not already doing so that is.

You both may wish to educate yourself about Bayard Rustin. In addition to the millions of others who are gay and have fought and died the good fight for civil rights in all of its dark corners and joyous celebrations.

You know with your small logic you fail to realize that being gay and african-american are not mutually exclusive, as much as your community would love to cleanse itself of the gay choice. You insult not only your race but also your gay brothers and sistas.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:19 AM on 06/17/2009

Again, you are a gay hater. That we should get rights, you reply "sickening". Hateful.

As far as gay people supporting the AA CIvil Rights movement, of the hundreds of gay men and lesbians that I know, I do not know of one that allows prejudicial comments in their home or policies in the government. In fact, our support for the AA Civil RIghts movement has been so strong and unwavering that the fact that other minorities did not support us in bigger numbers during the Prop 8 vote came as a disappointment and even a shock to us.

I am not blaming anyone in particular for Prop 8 (before you pounce with your OLD rhetoric), in fact I wish to remind everyone that 48% voted in support of my civil rights. It will not take much work to correct that imbalance as time, history, and the sense of decency and right is on our side.

Tanyars5 that picture you use as an icon yells out HATE to me when I see it. You have created that association. To the degree that I reply to you in any blogs in the future it will be simply to point out that you are trying to stir hatred, often between gays and Blacks.

Carol,

Your argument fails to take into account that gay individuals are also members of other minorities as well as anglos. Being gay, I can tellyou there is no stronger family atmosphere then the GAY family...everyone is loved in this family.

They announced federal employees who are LGBT will get healthcare benefits.
The PURELY POLITICAL stink on this action, after the DOMA brief, feels like I got spit on, then blown an air kiss.
I thought Obama was such a brilliant strategist, and this is like a checker move on a chess board.

Sorry if we can't all relax and "wait" for equal protection to just happen, as we've been promised by all of the democrats before Obama, while his administration compares our relationships to that of incest and penophiles. To me that is W term 3.

From Rep. Jared Polis (D-CO):

"I was shocked and disappointed to learn that President Obama chose to defend DOMA in federal court, especially given his campaign promise to call for a full repeal of DOMA. My sadness turned to outrage when I read the Justice Department's brief that not only defended this hurtful law but seemed to embrace it. Comparing my loving relationship with my partner, Marlon, to incest was unconscionable coming from a president who has called for change.
Since this filing, I have called on the President to issue a statement or give any sign that would clarify his position and am disappointed in his lack of reply.

I am a proud Democrat, as are many in the GLBT community, and I believe we must hold our leaders accountable. The Obama Administration made a HUGE mistake in the DOMA brief. If they keep making mistakes like this, they risk losing the support of the GLBT community forever, although I do not believe we are at that point yet.

President Obama needs to honor his promise to repeal this law and end its needlessly divisive and harmful impact on our nation. I again call on him to work with us in Congress to help pass legislation, ending this hateful and divisive law.

As the New York Times editorialized yesterday, "busy calendars and political expediency are no excuse for making one group of Americans wait any longer for equal rights."

I am sure people of color were told the same thing (not now, wait a little more, don't alienate those nice white folks who support you by being too radical...) and women are STILL being told those things. The bottom line is there is a politician who ran on the promise to be a "fierce advocate" for the LGBT community and it is not that it is happening slowly---we are going backwards!

And it is not like he is keeping all the rest of his promises either...end the war, health care, freedom of choice act, political prisoners, transparency in government, etc., etc., etc.

This man claimed to have integrity...how many free passes will you give him?

Y'know, I love that the gay marriage supporters are starting to alienate even people who agree with them. Keep moving towards the fringe. I'm sure you and the Republicans can have a great time drawing garish caricatures of each other.

Withholding financial support for the party over this issue hardly makes us fringe.

Withholding financial support because the President upheld his Oath of Office and didn't cop out by sopping to his constituency is what makes them part of the fringe.

@carsntrucks
The friends of gays and lesbians who read that FOUL HATEFUL DOMA brief understand why we are angry, most of them are angry WITH US.
Somehow your information about what gay rights supporters think...is ringing REALLY false.....possum.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:46 PM on 06/16/2009

Well, if that's true, they're every bit as naive and ignorant as anyone else who is upset by the brief. These arguments have been made by people against gay marriage for YEARS, and people have shooed it away. So when these same arguments are made in an official fashion, people have no right to pearl-clutch as if it's a big surprise.

To be honest, I blame the gay lobbyists who are pushing the issue. The DOJ would've never had to make that brief if they would've just let the legislature tackle the issue. They want to go the court route, and that forced the hand of the DOJ whose job is to uphold the law as is.

Anyone who states that a black man with enough courage to run and serve as President of a country with more than its fair share of ra-cist nut jobs is not credible.

John Aravosis:

"I cannot state strongly enough how damaging this brief is to us. Obama didn't just argue a technicality about the case, he argued that DOMA is reasonable. That DOMA is constitutional. That DOMA wasn't motivated by any anti-gay animus. He argued why our Supreme Court victories in Roemer and Lawrence shouldn't be interpreted to give us rights in any other area (which hurts us in countless other cases and battles). He argued that DOMA doesn't discriminate against us because it also discriminates about straight unmarried couples (ignoring the fact that they can get married and we can't).

He actually argued that the courts shouldn't consider Loving v. Virginia, the miscegenation case in which the Supreme Court ruled that it is unconstitutional to ban interracial marriages, when looking at gay civil rights cases. He told the court, in essence, that blacks deserve more civil rights than gays, that our civil rights are not on the same level."

I just wish someone arguing this point would take the time to understand legal precedent and suspect classifications. This is so ignorant and misguided its unbelievable. Loving v. Virginia involved suspect classifications which required the court to review the legislation at issue under strict scrutiny. The same does not apply with DOMA becuase sexual orientation, thus far, is not a suspect class.

Marriage is a fundamental right. Any time the exercise of a fundamental right is denied to one group and allowed to another group a strict scrutiny review by the court is required. Suspect classification is irrelevant.

Ask yourself, what are the common Fundamental rights? The right to travel, the right to marry, the right to determine the upbringing of your family.

And where in the Constitution is "suspect class" or "strict scrutiny" defined? The 14th Amendment does not use these words, and it does not say only groups meeting such tests get equal rights.
