Business Week:

There's a story, probably apocryphal, told about the legendary bank robber Willie Sutton, who knocked over so many financial institutions in the early part of the 20th century that he made Jesse James and John Dillinger look like a couple of Cub Scouts. A reporter asked Sutton why he robbed banks. Sutton's reply: Because that's where the money is.

Any young person who truly is educated and wants to build a career would look outside the U.S. at this time.

Phoenix sucks. Boil in the summer. Crime at all time high. Mexican drug cartel influence. Pathway for illegal aliens. No thanks.

I see Businessweek's reputation going down the drain with the recommendation of Phoenix. The economy is in a serious downturn there, especially downtown which was very hard hit by the mortgage meltdown. That would not be the best place for anyone to go for a job now. I would have thought Denver would be a much better choice as they haven't been as hard hit by the recession and are getting into a lot of environmental and technological projects. Probably would need to be a science or tech major for those jobs, though.

One of the most sobering experiences about the state of the USA is to watch a graduation ceremony from Chico Californis state Univ . Nobody dresses up anymore, actually flip flops dominste , rags for shorts under the gown, pretty embarssing all in all. if these kids represent the future, hmmm. Is it too much to ask for a bit of sense of occasion?

Sorry, grads.

If you were raring to get a job that will pay off your tuition, this ain't the year.
You might want to make nice with Mom & Dad and see if you can move back home.
Get some volunteer work in a field related to your vocation just so when things eventually turn around you'll have something to put on the resume.

You think that sounds harsh? It was the topic of conversation on a recent
broadcast of National Public Radio.

I cannot speak for Phoenix, but I am both appalled and amused by the attitudes of many of the graduates with whom I speak. They will take "any" job as long as it is within 100 miles of their home and family. Working at a university wherein most of the students think an hours drive is like going to a foreign land can be frustrating. I had one graduate turn down a position in the midwest because "there was no skiing nearby." Go figure! Some seem to think that if you have a degree, the job will somehow magically appear. Yes, the more sophisticated and worldly wise know how to initiate a search, but there is still that extant attitude of "i have to close to mom and pop." Guess they want to still be fed and clothed at home.
Cheers!

I know many people who would not leave their coastal home for any amount of money except to travel to another coast to surf. For them Surfing is Life. I used to have nightmares that i had been banished to Kansas.

Are they kidding? Phoenix? A dust-bowl town where crime is rampant and for every person moving in, 2 people move out of state. Arizona is a low-wage, right to work state. Enjoy the cockroaches there, which are rampant.

New York: tons of financial layoffs over 100,000 jobs gone in that sector alone, high cost of living.

Indianapolis: the whole state of indiana is backward, and the only reason why you'd get a job here is because anyone who had talent left Indianapolis by the dot-com bust of 2000. Traffic congestion horrible. Backwards town.

Amazing article, it couldn't be farther from the truth.

Sounds like you should leave the U.S. Of course, that would mean your parents would need to move their basement as well.

NOT Phoenix--geez, we're Detroit only hotter. Just look at all the Craig's List postings wanting help to find out how bad it really is in Arizona.

I heard there's plenty of unemployment in Phoenix. This article is about as legit as the ones that are posted on Yahoo all the time.

Well it looks like AZ paid Newsweek to run a positive article about Phoenix. You should move to Arizona if you have no college degree, because the jobs there are of the low paying no-degree type. Industries there are still run by robber barrens. Dirt cheap? More like dirt poor. I can tell you WHY the median age is low: it served as a haven for young families where there were no college degrees because of the cheaper standard of living. Arizona's economy was based on housing developments, which are to say, a little passe now. The state is a sub-prime mess. College grads getting their degrees in Arizona LEAVE the state. I know I did.

A very important thing this article missed was how cities like Phoenix are unsustainable post peak-oil. Residents are 100% reliant on their cars to get them around. Its so spread out that walking isn't practical, not to mention the oppressive heat one would have to face half the year. And it costs $400 just to register a newer vehicle in AZ. Fuel prices are on the rise again...

This article also failed to mention that the state ranks dead last in education. Please, think of your children.

They say salt lake city is good if you want to work for the Worst place to start a career , we pick you up, rent a car call center. Its a revolving door there they hire and fire at such a fast pace to keep from having to pay more than a starting wage. They ruin more careers than any other company in the world, but they are huge and very rich because of it.

This si common no matter where the call center is located. It's called "the quarter game". No worry, those jobs will be overseas shortly.

Your house is worth $125,000 but you paid $250,000 don"t worry with "Mark-To-Market" Neutered you can say whatever you want to about your home value and no one can refute you!
Now when you go in for a loan, simply declare the house is worth $300,000 and along with your clean "ON-THE-BOOKS Balance Sheet" with no visible other debts means you get money from the FED at 1% interest or maybe less!
Why can"t this world be true for ALL AMERICANS like it is for Wall Street?
We do not own Congress and they DO using ill-gotten FUNDS!
Are the Wall Street Banks really healthy? With "OFF-THE-BOOKS" accounting and "MARK-TO-MARKET" Neutered who knows what the truth is!
