I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Weird Al Yankovic is back with a single called "Craigslist" off an album due out next year. He mocks the Website, and those that can be found hocking wares on it. The single is an obvious homage to the Doors (Ray Manzarek was enlisted to play keyboard) but unlike most of Weird Al's previous work, it is not set to a specific song's preexisting tune, but rather an amalgam of several of them.

Being done over by Weird Al is a VERY high compliment to any musician.
And musicians know it!

Weird Al lets everyone have it equally.

Next should be Facebook or Twitter.

I love it, in a different way than "White and Nerdy." Weird Al has cracked me up since I first heard "My Bologna" thirty years ago.

Oops. I really need to finish watching a video before commenting. It is most certainly a revisit of "When the Music's Over" and can be nothing else. And that is sad - that song is SACRED!!!!!

Why isn't Weird Al in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame?

I highly recommend seeing him live if you get a chance, you come away with a new appreciation of him and the music.

I agree. I took my son and a friend of his a couple of years ago, not expecting much. But was extremely impressed by both his musical talent and his intelligence/creativity. The man is a genius -- and I don't use that term very often.

saw Al in concert in 2007 & 2008. Awesome. Crowd left before Albequerque. They were idiots. It went on for about 20min. Weird Al still rules!

It's obviously based on "20th Century Fox." Weird Al rules. :)

and Soul Kitchen, and When the Music's Over, and several more. that's why it's a pastiche. it is definitely recognizable as Doors genre. Manzarek has a lot to do with that.

in fact, anyone here heard (it's old) the Soul Kitchen cover by X? Manzarek produced their "Los Angeles" album, which has the song on it.

I thought is was out of the "Soul Kitchen" myself.....sad that Yankovic always goes for the cheap laugh. He and Manzarek could do something really great together, something new and fresh but that with ole time feelin'.

Or it is I just miss Jim so much?

It's what he calls a "style parody"--like how the song "Dare to Be Stupid" parodied Devo's style, and sounded a little like "Whip It" but wasn't that song exactly.

Another great on is "Bob," which is a Bob Dylan style parody--the lyrics are all palindromes. I think it's on Poodle Hat.

Kudos to Manzarek for playing keyboards - a quarter century of Weird Al - who'da thunk it?

I can dig how Al paid tribute to Jim, some of the songs are not all that obviously referenced. Queen of the highway and Gloria being among them. If Ray or John read this, Scott, one of Hank's old friends, is still around pulling a handyman's wage, i think i have his number somewhere. Also, John, I've discovered something about Cliff that affirms your initial gut reflex, if it in fact bears out. Not sure what to do about that... They say everyone's got a Jim story, but man those were always Doors Stories... and randomly, did anyone take footage at the Cheetah?

ah, you just showin your age. Just what you were into. Granted, "White and Nerdy" covers white boy rap pretty good. But, this tune is truly awesome. There was a lot of Doors songs referenced in the song and video. And for him to pull off the vocals like that? Man, the dude has some talent. It would really be cool for him to put out an album of serious music. But, he probably doesn't need too.

Al's done artist pastiche tunes on previous albums.
Examples:
Devo - "Dare to Be Stupid"
Brian Wilson (Smile) - "Pancreas"
Frank Zappa - "Genius In France" (Dweezil Zappa plays gtr. on this)

I was trying to figure out what Pancreas reminded me of. Thanks for that (and the enlightenment that Genius in France is actually a tie in to anything musically (the lyrics obviously refer to Jerry Lewis)- I always thought like Albuquerque it was just Al free associating like crazy.
