Holder

Attorney General Eric Holder restated his intention on Wednesday to release a comprehensive report, declassified to the fullest extent, on the legal advice provided by the Bush administration in its authorization of enhanced interrogation techniques.

Speaking before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Holder said that delays in releasing the findings of the Office of Professional Responsibility's (OPR) investigation into former President George W. Bush's Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) was the result of administrative obstacles and not political foot-dragging or objections from the CIA

"No it is not," he said, when asked if CIA interference was a factor in delaying the publication of the OPR report.

"It is our hope to release as complete a report as we can," Holder said. "And one of the things that I think we want to do is declassify as much of this report as we can so that when people read it... they will have a full feeling for what it is, how the lawyers in the OPR dealt with (the investigation) and what is the basis of the conclusions that they reached."

Holder's remarks came in response to questioning from Rhode Island Democrat Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, who noted that the Senate had been told more than a year ago of a pending investigation into the legal rational used by the Bush administration lawyers.

The Attorney General's testimony came on the same morning that the Washington Post reported that the CIA was pushing the Obama White House to suppress key findings of a separate report by the agency's own inspector general. That report is believe to show that the torture of terrorism suspects had not yielded strong or operational information.

Whitehouse pressed repeatedly as to whether in the case of the OPR report, the CIA was trying to influence the study's findings. Noting that the agency had a role in reviewing the report and advocated keeping some of the findings classified, the senator asked Holder what kind of assurances he had received that those agency officials, who might be implicated, were not influencing the process.

"I don't think we have gotten anything yet from the CIA," responded Holder, "at least nothing I'm aware of with regard to what their position is concerning the declassification issue.... This may be not an issue at all. And to the extent that it is an issue, I will interact with [CIA] Director [Leon] Panetta and raise the questions that you raised in addition to our general feeling that we want to have as much as this declassified as we can."

Several hours before Holder testified, a group of human rights and civil liberty organizations released a letter to the Attorney General calling on his office to release the OPR report quickly.

"We welcomed your decision to release several OLC memoranda that authorized the use of abusive and illegal interrogation techniques such as waterboarding, forced nakedness, stress positions, and exposure to frigid temperatures," read the letter, signed by the American Civil Liberties Union, Amnesty International, the Brennan Center for Justice, and others. "But within the four corners of these legal documents is only a small part of the picture," the letter stated. "By releasing the OPR report, you will demonstrate the administration's continuing commitment to transparency and openness. You will also help strengthen a proper understanding of the important role played by government lawyers serving the United States."

I think we need a complete investigation into the attornies that represented, and "judged" the Gitmo Chinese Uighrs. Are they connected to the sepritist movement of a small faction of Chinese Uighurs in Xinjiang? Do they donate money that feeds into the East Turkistan terror network?

Please, the American people should have a complete, and independent, investigation, oif why and how these al Qaeda trained Gitmo Vhinese Uighurs were rebranded as "9innocent" and provided santuary by the US?

If they were a danger to London, whoul we have set them free? No. Then why is it OK to set them free if they are only a danger to China?

"Mehsud, 33, spent 25 months in custody at the US base in Cuba before his release in March 2004.
He commanded militants who kidnapped two Chinese engineers in Pakistan's South Waziristan region shortly after his release.
One of the Chinese men was killed during a rescue bid by Pakistani forces.
As a young man, Mehsud fought for the Taleban against the Northern Alliance in Afghanistan. "

According to the BBC article you link to, Mehsud is a Pashtun. What's that got to do with Uighurs? Because someone commits offenses against Chinese, someone else should be punished?

Holder wants to run screaming from this whole deal, because, as a lawyer surrounded by mostly other lawyers in the Obama administration, he knows the Dems can't win. Cheney threw it down when he dared them to release the reports; he did that because he knows the facts will support him and his efforts. It's like Obama's health care plans; the more the public sees, the more they understand the truth, and the more it hurts Obama.

The Texas situation and the war situation are separate, and the law is clear on this matter. In war we drop bombs on people attacking us, killing them. We take people from the battlefield who we believe to have information that will kill us, if we let it happen. If we have the probable cause for this belief, we have the moral obligation to use water boarding to learn that intel. They had legal people on site issuing opinions about war situations. It is all documented. If it were illegal, it would have been pursued at the time the situation was known.

The Republicans are using two "defenses": The Jesse James defense - he was a bank robber, so bank robbery is now legal. And the I am broke defense - I needed he money, and that also makes bank robbery legal.

Both "defenses" ignore the fact that bank robbery is a criminal offense.

Is the US a nation of Laws or is it not ?

Torture was authorized, directed and carried out. The quality and quantity of evidence is overwhelming.

Torture is against International and US Law.

If the US is a nation of Laws, then those guilty of breaking those laws should be brought to justice.

It won't happen because the US ceased to be a nation of laws quite some time ago. And, curiously enough, nobody in DC apparently wants us to return to being one despite all the rhetoric and posturing. Justice in this country is selective and it certainly isn't going to have anything to do with people who were involved in the cesspool of Bush's Justice Department.

This is a bit slow , isn't it? Were it me , I can think over several guys whom I would take out back , give them a match , a cigarette , and a shovel...and I would be wrong to do that.
A case must be built. And this one will be harder than most , but there will come a moment when , like during the Nixon hearings , and Alexander Butterfiefd showed up.
I hope/feel confident that something along that line will happen , an inside guy will start letting it all out , and , well , one step at a time.

Yup. Waiting for the IG's report, which is supposed to be out by Friday. Hope it isn't full of black pages. In any event, we already know the most salient points from footnotes in the OLC memos: torture was used before there was any DoJ approval and the torture that was committed went WAY beyond the torture the OLC memos approved. Next? The report from the Office of Professional Responsibility, I hope.

Holder needs to complete an open investigation and let the chips fall where they may. And, I don't know why the Spanish judge building a case against the Bush-Six should be the only prosecuting force. The Bush-Cheney gang violated the Geneva Conventions many times over on prisoners from several countries. The Bush-Six, Bush, and Cheney may find themselves under indictment in several foreign jurisdictions

And, does anyone know the name of the total idiot who directly ordered the initial transport of the Gitmo prisoners to that facility? Bush, Cheney, or someone else? Why didn't our CIA and military intelligence people conduct all of their investigations in the country of capture? The whole affair smacks of the continuing stupidity of the Bush-Cheney gang working hard to elevate themselves to even higher levels of stupidity.

Gitmo has to be THE dumbest thing in the history of our intelligence programs.

to say that we have tortured people with the exception of abu ghraib, is a most ridiculous statement. there have been more journalists waterboarded than terrorists. the president and only the president had the authority to authorize these activities. you people need to leave disney world and come back to the real world. these guys would severe your head with a pocket knife and if you dont believe that look up daniel pearl. i wonder how you would feel if your child was in danger whether your misguided "principles" would save them. oh yea thats right after the first world trade center bombing in 1993(under clinton) when the f.b.i. tried to interrogate those responsible they just lawyered up. much like khalied thought he was going to be able to do. i dont agree with everything bush did but i thank him for taking our safety seriously, unlike you.
as for holder and obama, to investigate the previous administration, is a gross miscarriage of politics and should not be done. bush didnt investigate any of clintons questionable dealings. you people should check yourselves.

You have heard of the theater of the absurd, haven't you? Since Obama is becoming W, Mk II, the Democrats must nominate & elect a replacement for Obama. The new POTUS can start enforcing US laws fairly on 1/20/13. Some say there is no statute of limitation for treason. That means that W, Cheney can join Obama, et al in being indicted for treason, given a speedy fair trial(s), be convicted, sentenced to death & be executed within 60 days of being sentenced.
It may seem absurd to you Tex but that is the law in the USA.
Building execution chambers in federal prisons, turning old cells or building holding cells for expanded death rows for the condemned traitors, ordering extra gurneys, chemicals, drugs & other supplies needed for lethal injections, hiring & training corrections officers & executioners will employ a few unemloyed Americans. These few jobs can't be exported to foreign countries.
It will be a small start for the USA's recovery from the current & rapidly growing recession/depression.

Just more smoke and mirrors. Look how bad Bush was Look Look Look. Let us distract you while we steal America. Stimulus hasn't worked it is Bush's fault, Unemployment rising it is Bush's fault. We don't have government run health care yet it is Bush's fault. Nothing Obama has done has helped the economy but it is Bush's fault.
On expanding government I wasn't a Bush fan. He did keep us safe and we did have a good economy for 6 years. We now have a President who is orcherstrating the largest governmental power grab in our history. We now have 16 Czars with executive privilege who make policy and spends 1.2 trillion of tax payer money without any oversight by congress or the peopole. We have a president that thinks laws only apply to you and not to him, see the IG firing and the Chrysler deal. We now have a president that does not have a clue when it comes to foriegn affairs, see North Korea and Iran.
As long as Obama has you looking back at Bush you won't notice what he does. Obama has you believing that Bush, Business, and the Rich are the devil that should be taken down by all means possible. Everyone should be equal in what they have. We need a two class society the workers and government. Of course the government will have all the money and power.

"He did keep us safe "

No he didn't. 3,000 people died on 9/11. And yes it was preventable if he had only read his stu.pid memos and done something about it.

And, what, almost 5,000 soldiers have died in a war of choice? And that's not even including American Contractors or the 10s of thousands of injured.

So all in all 8,000 people have died because of Bush's arrogance.

Yeh right! He kept us same while 4000 fellow Americans died for his ridiculous 'adventure' in Iraq. Thousands more died in Iraq and hundreds of Allies that went along with Bush/Cheney BS. Now what!! They say America was safe while other countries where attacked for supporting America? Nonsense. He forgot the target, nothing mentioned about Afghanistan from the holier than now, Cheney lip service. They don't even say the country's name anymore..............and people think he's complaining because he's a true patriot. A true patriot that would never put himself in a uniform 5X when asked for referment. I am so glad he wasn't in charge of our country.

Let's also remember that those 5,000 soldiers were not "keeping us safe". Iraq posed no threat to the US, had nothing to do with 9/11, and was not threatening the U.S.'s freedoms in any way. I'm so tired of people thanking our troops for "keeping us free" in Iraq and Afghanistan. We should be thanking them for fighting on behalf of a country that has put them in harm's way for nothing.
