Obama

New poll numbers from NBC/Wall Street Journal produce two major and potentially conflicting story lines when it comes to the Obama administration's efforts for a health care overhaul. On the one hand, the American public overwhelmingly favors a choice between getting insurance coverage either through the private market or a government run option. Indeed, 76 percent of respondents said it was either "extremely" or "quite" important to "give people a choice of both a public plan administered by the federal government and a private plan for their health insurance."

With the public option being such a lightning rod in the current health care debate, progressive activists are already emailing around these numbers as evidence that voters are way ahead of the politicians. Certainly, the findings provide a boost of sorts to President Obama, who has stood by the public plan even as Republican opposition has crystallized.

That said, the president still has his work cut out for him. In the same NBC/WSJ poll, only 33 percent of respondents said they thought the president's health care plan, to the extent they knew of it, was a "good idea;" 32 percent said it was a bad idea.

In short: the administration has yet to complete the sale. An additional 30 percent of the public had no opinion of Obama's proposal for reform. But when read a description of the general outline -- requiring insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions, an employer mandate, tax credits for lower income families to buy coverage, and tax increases on wealthier Americans to pay for it - the number of respondents in support rose to 55 percent.

Obama is not a "what," but a "who."

Is basic grammar and proper word usage more difficult than lightbulb removal and replacement?

If President Obama does not get the Public Option Health Insurance done, he will be a one-term president. This is the defining issue of his "first" term. I know I would never vote for him should he fail us and give in to the "for-profit" corporate health industry (notice I did not use the word 'care" when referring to private insurance)

Are you also gonna hold the senators that vote against his idea to one term? Its not like he can command it to be done and it is done. The repuke.s have sworn allegance against Obama and whatever is good for the country.

Agreed. The President can only do so many executive orders. Congress has to agree. He can not do this alone. Hold the congress to one term, instead.

And if he keeps spending money this way, gets the health plan and then raise taxes to pay for it then he will also be an "one termer"

We don't have enough people making 250K+ to pay for all of this. So the promise of only raising on a select group of rich people is not realistic

He can't keep spending money we don't have. They are doing it though. I haven't seen a President so far do less except Jimmy Carter. Remember him handing out checks to Cuban prisoners on rubberboats? He gave them more than an American family brought home at the time for the week. At some point, just like with Carter, one will have to turn on the other to keep in office, either Congress or Obama. Wonder who will win? Carter lost.

The lawmakers are on the "socialized plan" paid for by the tax payer. Shelby and McConnell declared that America has the best healthcare system in the world. McCain got huffy during the campaign when a reporter ask him if he had ever paid for health insurance. Of course, he hadn't. We've paid for him since birth.

America's best healthcare leaves us in 19th place among the 20 industrialized nations and with the 2nd highest infant mortality rate. Confirnement in a U S Hospital is the 29th leading cause of death due to medication error, physician error, antibiotic resistant bacterial infection, and neglect.

Last time I read the founding documents, one of them said "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness". Can't have life and happiness is difficult if you don't have your health and you are denied health care because you can't afford it. Not to mention all the unethical, immoral denials of claims we all know about.

One way to get Congress pass Healthcare reform with a Public Option is to suspend by Executive Order Public Option coverage for all members of Congress and their families. Ask them to have a bill on your desk by a certain date. They can purcase private insurance until a bill is passed.

It is simple as 1-2-3.

I support the public option based on Obama's campaign promise that that option would be to offer the public the same insurance that is now offered to all federal employees including congressmen. Did that promise get lost somewhere? Has that promise been forgotten? Well, consider this a reminder.

Great. I figure if my income tax rate gets much higher than 55% or so, I'm going to quit, move to Montana and find an enyoyable minimum wage job. Nobody in the govt will miss my 30K in taxes much anyway given the way cashola is thrown around over there these days.

That's what universal healthcare is all about; don't worry, I'll be paying for your insurance, too.. Go ahead and enjoy it.

We all pay taxes to build roads for everyone to use, pay into the social security pot (egads! There's that "social"-ism specter again!), and I pay for kids' schools and education while I have none.

It's what we do.

Even rugged individualism is no panacea for bad health practices that our present system offers...If you move to Big Sky Country, you might be surprised that we are not all idiots and the we are quickly becoming a blue state...Not to mention, you will need that saved money to fly to Seattle or Calif. for good doctors since greed has taken most of ours to the big cities...dork.

the propaganda is so deep you could use a shovel

do you really think that if you take out the 30-40% of the dollars private health insurance companies put in their own pockets that the cost of healthcare is going to increase

healthcare is already too expensive and we can't afford it - we pay for it either way, it is just that you take out the middle man who takes huge corporate profits and has one and only one motive and that is to make more profit at YOUR expense

But I'll bet you don't mind all those tax dollars of yours going to support wars in Iraq and all the money Halliburton and the weapons dealers are making off of it.
It's amazing to me that anyone would think that making healthcare affordable and available to all people is not important but they don't care about their money being used for death and destruction and profit.
At any rate, you shouldn't worry about it costing you more. Just cut the profit and bureaucracy of the insurance companies and out-of-hand medical costs, and it will probably cost a lot LESS for everyone.

Well, cheer up and get a decent accountant. If Warren Buffet pays 17% taxes and Cindy McCain pays 5%, then you must be doing something very, very wrong. Since the highest tax rate is 33% on amounts over 250,000, I would suggest that your 30K might be inflated or you have the dumbest CPA known to mankind. Are you related to Joe the plumber?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:03 PM on 06/18/2009

xlntcat, you got that exactly right. Why most people know nothing about how taxation works amazes me.

And look at the stupids promoting removing the tax free status of Employer based insurance. It won't bring in much money and hit will hit the working poor and middle class HARD.

Medical expenses are deductible on Schedule B of the 1040. Assume a $10k cost of policy. So everyone with ee'r paid gets $10k in phantom income. those earning over $100k can just deduct it; their with holding just goes up a tiny fraction.

But if you earn less than $100k you are hit with an extra 7% deduction, $750, from your paycheck and a higher withholding - out of real income that stays the same.

So you get a PAY CUT of about 10% of your existing pay!

The only good sugestion you had in your comment is to visit Sen. Sanders web site and I have, but the rest does not make any sense. Pres Obama is doing everything he can but he is a thoughtful, methodical, smart, man. Go to the whitehouse.gov and watch his speech to the AMA. He is doing everything he can and we have to do everything we can such as contacting our representatives, rather than trashing the only person who is on our side! Would you have preffered a McCain/Palin administration? I am willing to gamble my right arm that we would not be talking about this. You can be sure we would be talking about going to war in Iran.

I'm fine with a publc option, as long as its paid for by user premiums, not extortion of the populace at large. These premiums should also be tax deductable, as are the premiums paid by employers for their employees. Also, everyone should be forced to buy it, if they don't get insurance through work.

All federal employees should be moved to this plan, rather than the gold plated, Lexus style plans they've voted in for themselves - including Congress and the Senate.
