Now that Chaz Bono (formerly known as Chastity) has gone public with his sex change, his mother, Cher, is opening up about how she feels about the news.

"Chaz is embarking on a difficult journey, but one that I will support," she tells PEOPLE in an exclusive statement. "I respect the courage it takes to go through this transition in the glare of public scrutiny and although I may not understand I will strive to be understanding. The one thing that will never change is my abiding love for my child."

I've always liked Cher's singing and acting especially. Don't really care what her former daughter now son has done to her body. She has the right to do so no matter what we think or say. All I can say is "good luck Chaz" and I hope it's not something you end up regretting.

It is always about love. Cher, like many mothers, has been been handed a few surprises in her life. While she may get knocked down, she always gets back up again to smile, love, and support her family while she is on this earth.

Chaz' book, "Family Outing," 1998, is well worth the read. His story, plus many others. Once Cher and Chaz began to discuss his being gay, Cher suggested therapy, which they did to their mutual benefit.

Chaz is very lucky to have a liberal mother who is opend minded and who is supporting his decision and is open to learning about his situation. Cher has always had a very large following from the LGBT community. good luck to the both of them

It takes a ton of courage to do what Chaz is doing. It is cool that Cher is finally behind him. Just let him live his life in peace finally. I am a transsexual man( as some here might know already) This is a life or death choice for many of us. Sometimes it takes longer for people to understand this and go through the change at an older stage in life.
