Illinois Unemployment At 10.1 Percent, Highest In 25 Years

CHICAGO (AP) -- Illinois' unemployment rate reached 10.1 percent in May, the highest it's been in 25 years.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security says another 17,400 jobs were lost in May, mostly in manufacturing. That brings the total number of unemployed to 671,400.

However, fewer jobs were lost in May than in April, when the unemployment rate stood at 9.4 percent.

IDES Director Maureen O'Donnell says the next phase of the recession will probably include a slowdown in job losses - though the unemployment rate likely will continue to rise.

The national unemployment rate in May was 9.4 percent.
