Since the late 1980s we all turned our back on the border because we wanted cheap labor to lubricate our bubble economy. Then in 2005, the coup de etat of the GOP by the extreme right wing took place and the GOP started playing Hispanics and Spanish language as a wedge issues. Useful idiots like Trancredo were introduced to make sure that an informed discussion on reform would not take place.
Unfortunately, all the Bush family did for the GOP has been for naught. We could have had real immigration reform like McCain championed that would have secured the border, encouraged undocumeted workers to regularized themselves and encouraged seasonal workers. We would want these workers to keep their families abroad and be able to return annually to their homes in Mexico and Central America with a small annual fortune (by local standards) of US$10K. But that requires putting race baiting aside.
This only hurts the GOP. Undocumented workers continue to perform low skilled jobs. Nothing has change except the future of the GOP.
You dont have the votes for Immigration reform. You dont have the votes for Health Care reform. You dont have the votes to regulate the banks. I am sorry but I thought we gave the democrats enough votes in November. Do your job or you'll be out of one in 2010 and maybe in 2012.
The only "reform" we need in immigration is that our elected officials need to enforce the laws. We need to deport all ILLEGAL ALIENS. Those who hire ILLEGALS should be jailed and/or heavily fined. We should also return to the original intent of the 14th amendment and do away with anchor babies. If we do these things there wouldn't be any problems with immigration.
I am sick of hearing about it. I wish they just get it done. I would support reform if at the same time they imposed extremely strict penalties for anyone hiring illegals, have a national worker card(as schumer is proposing) and require every employer to use a something like e-verify, require all police in the country to verify immigration status of any person arrested. Some of you forget that once the illegal is legalized, the employer will have to pay at least minimum wage, hence that job will become open to all and not just the illegal, as the employer loses the incentive to pay under the table. It can be done but I fear this issue will still be bouncing around in 2012.
I still dont get why illegals feel they have the right to demand rights like "citizens" La Raza can cma.
This is the part I don't get. They feel it's okay for Mexico to enforce their immigration laws but not the US... They get very bold about it because our politicians keep catering to them. I too would support immigration reform if I thought for one second that the border would be enforced and the law followed. Unfortunately, that is not going to happen with this administration so I will NEVR support immigration reform.
That phrase is getting really f**king old!! Health care - don't have the votes. immigration - don't have the votes. et cetera et cetera et cetera. So much for a majority Congress.
It doesn't matter that the dems run everything. A majority of the American people including elected officials don't want ILLEGAL ALIENS to get amnesty.
I can't for the life of me understand why people have this ingrained in their psyche that 11 or 13 or the 15 million supposed illegal immigrants who provided needed labor when the economy was strong, are still here(living on what with no jobs-us freebies for illegals-- don't think so) or that they ever had the intention of becoming citizens. That is just unreasonable. There are people who have come here legally on visas and have overstayed because during that time they did start a life here, and those are the ones who are seeking citizenship and the numbers are much less than the supposed millions that us citizens feel so threatened by. There is such a thing as quotas people. As far as the border jumpers, there is more law enforcement expenditure thrown at hunting and rooting out these illegals and with great success. Due to catering to peoples xenophobia probably a lot of other security concerns are taking second place. So those who want them out keep that in mind when the tax dollars go flying out, and remember this is what you wanted it spent on rather than seeing this in a reasonable light and reform the rules which does not mean millions will be granted citizenship gratis. Use you heads.
You have got to be kidding! You must not live in California where the illegals have taken over entire cities. PTA meetings are conducted entirely in Spanish at some of the schools. There is no such thing as border enforcement here. California is now bankrupt from supporting the illegals and that is still not enough for the political crime family we have here! The want to hit us up for even more taxes! ... and illegals didn't provide needed labor when the economy was strong; they provided slave labor that allowed employers to exploit them and lower wages across the nation, forcing the US taxpayer to educate and medicate their slaves! How anyone can support adding 12 million illegals to an American born workforce already desparate for jobs is beyone me. Get a clue!
California is bankrupt because of proposition 13 which is basically welfare for native Californians.
As to Spanish, get use to it. An Anglo - Hispanic military and economic alliance stretching from the Arctic to the Antarctic is an American geo-political goal in the new multi-polar world.
Right now I want the president to focus all his energy on health care, not immigration, not gay marriage, etc. One thing at a time.
This is one of the most contentious issues on the President's agenda. Unemployment and homelessness is soaring, there doesn't seem to be any end to the foreclosure problem and here we are trying to grant citizenship to people who shouldn't be here in the first place. They take our jobs, drive real wages down, bankrupt our healthcare and hospitals and stick us with the bill. Why? Because they want a better life!
We have our own people to feed and provide homes and jobs for, we can't possibly add to our problems while hoping a silver bullet to fix it. Who the hell is going to pay off our national debt? I'm a lifelong Democrat, but given the current mess we're in, I've had it with this.
maybe in the next election, the democrats will win enough seats to get control of congress
then we'll see some real change
then again maybe not
The only "change" we need is for these people to enforce the laws already on the books. All ILLEGAL ALIENS no matter where they come from or who they are related to need to be DEPORTED!
Use the 51 seat vote and get it done! Round up all illegals and send them packing! Give back the employment opportunities to AMERICAN CITIZENS!!
Are you sure you don't want another amnesty? How about letting 13 million people who broke our laws and sovereignty gain instant citizenship?
It is true we are a nation of immigrants but we are also a nation of slaves and slave owners. And it is also true that when my grandparents immigrated they did it legally. My wife immigrated too. We did it legally. It was a pain in the ass. But we did it.
When I was in the Navy there were guys there from the Philipines who COULD NOT get citizenship! They were serving this nation and they couldn't get in. But some folk from Mexico cross the border thus becoming criminals and its ok? It makes me sick.
Perhaps the quotas to admit people from the Philippines are filled; you know like too many people want to be US citizens from that country too. The Philippines has their own army. So why do they get a pass from you. Sounds hypocritical. Immigration reform does NOT mean that all illegal immigrants will be admitted. However, we should all be grateful we have a friendly country at our border. Right next door. Not out in the ocean or eight thousand miles away. Sounds like it would make sense that that situation would probably warrant a higher quota. It would be better to face and solve the problem rather than to throw tax dollars at law enforcement.
If the Democrats held 100% of the seats in congress I doubt they would get anything done.
Ya think? lolol good point
