I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Author and comedian John Hodgman--also known as the PC Guy-- was the headliner of this year's 65th annual Radio and TV Correspondents Dinner, and he delivered a humorous speech in which he teased President Obama for being a "nerd," saying that he hoped Obama could finally heal the "age-old conflict" between nerds and jocks.

Extremely well done. One of the best such performances I've ever seen at such an event.

I find that many on the left that voice disappointment are the one's that had a specific issue in mind when they voted for the president. For those voters, that issue becomes a litmus test as to ow genuine President Obama's "lefty" credentials are. However, i dare those same voters to take a step back and judge this president's overall performance on foreign and domestic issues. Even at this early stage, I find myself applauding not only is policy positions but his approach as well. That's not to say I agree with him all the time. I find the policy and pace at which he is laying the foundation for a green energy economy inadequate. But I also realize how important a well-managed healthcare system is to our country's overall budget for decades to come. Priority dictates that he get that fixed first. Everything else hinges on it because he knows that everything else is relatively easy as far as Congress is concerned.

I agree. I also believe that it's much harder than we could possibly imagine for the President to gain enough consensus to get all objectives met. His job not only has the day to day, it requires a marathon of 3D chess playing in a town full of land mines.

This was a clever bit, flattering and also a little mocking (as opposed to insulting or obsequious), but fitting with Hodgman and Obama's Braniac images.

Interesting how apolitical it was--I wouldn't have thought it possible. Refreshing! (And POTUS was funny, too. No wonder Hodgeman seemed uncharacteristically nervous--POTUS is a tough opening act to follow).

Thanks to MSNBC for showing Obama's completely, twice. :)

John's whole bit was really funny, but I think my favorite part was his eloquent admonition to those that voted for the president but find themselves disagreeing with or disappointed by him on certain issues. Even if you don't see eye to eye with President Obama on some issues, know that we have a very intelligent, pragmatic person in the White House that if presented with a civil, well-formed, factual argument, is apt to rethink his position. These qualities haven't been found in an American President for some time, in my opinion. Those on the left and the right need to know that demagoguery is an ineffective means of persuasion with this president, wether you voted for him or not. Progressives do indeed have a friend in the White House. As a matter of fact, all Americans do. Some just don't recognize it yet.

Now let's work on those bums in congress! (lol)

IMO, many people think a president's job is based on the "ideals" of the last eight years. Rule of law applies in all aspects of a president's position, buffered by the legislative and judicial branches, as defined in the US Constitution.

If more people actually knew that, they would realize what a scary joke "King George" pulled over on the people of the United States.

I'm glad that President Obama is once again bringing pragmatism and facts back into the limelight!

I agree. It also occurred to me that the reason so little was done by GW (besides starting wars and cutting taxes for the wealthy, killing bankruptsy for everyday people and trying again and again to turn Social Security over to Wall Street) is because like the rest of his party, he does not believe in government. So for 8 years he sits on his duff and goes to bed by 9:00 PM and now we have a President that is working his duff off. So much to do, so little time!

Outstanding speech! He took it in a clever direction, with many parallels to more serious matters. And all without being condescending in any way.

Indeed. It seems that many (but not all) on here are missing the subtext. This speech wasn't about whether or not Obama was a genuine nerd. It was about whether or not he was a genuine progressive, and of the left being disappointed in what they've seen so far.

I'm waiting for my PC to crash. It's close to 3 years old which is the planned obsolesence of these "state of the art machines". When that happens I'll use my back up that has XP. When that crashes and burns , I go with a Mac. If I am really lucky , I will not have to go to the Mac stage. I will no longer need to work and then folks can get me via phone or write a letter and post it. I look forward to that day.

The title of this article is incredibly misleading John Hodgman did not make fun of President Obama for being a nerd. He made fun of him for not being as nerdy as he seems to be. The whole nerd criteria question and answer section was probably the funniest of the bit. He knew his Star Trek but failed on Dune.
