NEW YORK — The granddaughter of Cuban revolutionary leader Ernesto "Che" Guevara is at the forefront of another revolution _ for vegetarianism.

Lydia Guevara poses semi-nude in a PETA campaign that tells viewers to "join the vegetarian revolution," said PETA spokesman Michael McGraw.

The print campaign is expected to debut in October in magazines and posters, McGraw said. It will be launched first in Argentina, where Che Guevara was born, and then internationally. PETA approached the 24-year-old in recent months after finding out she was a vegetarian, McGraw said.

In the ad, Lydia Guevara wears camouflage pants, a red beret, and bandoliers of baby carrots while standing with one fist on her hip and the other outstretched.

"It very much evokes the tag line of the ad, which is 'Join the vegetarian revolution,'" McGraw said. "It's an homage of sorts to her late grandfather."

Che Guevara was a Marxist leader who played a pivotal role in Fidel Castro's rise to power in Cuba. He was executed in Bolivia in 1967.

The ad is PETA's first campaign promoting vegetarianism in South America.

"We say the best way to save animals is not to eat them," McGraw said.

He said others who have promoted vegetarianism for PETA include Paul McCartney, Forest Whittaker and Alicia Silverstone.

Her grandfather was killed by the Bolivian army, although the Bolivian jungle had almost done the job for them.

Zapatista,

Did he visit Pearl Harbor or German, Conc, entr, ation camps. How bout Soviet Gulags?

History involves the big picture. You seem to understand a very limited view , cherry picking facts, that is self serving for your very limited, narrow minded outlook.

Beware of worshiping heroes.

Her grandpa was one of the most heroic men of the 20th century, who died trying to rally exploited mine workers to his cause in Bolivia. However, now his portrait hangs in the Presidential room in Bolivia - vindicating his struggle.

If he was such a hero, why is it that Castro, the CIA, and the Bolivian army all wanted him dead?

I am greatly confused by PETA. I'm all for eating vegetables and I'm not a fan of animal cruelty either so I'm on their side when it comes to that but . . .

. . . when they protest about the tradition of the fish throwing in Seattle and when they criticize the prez for killing a fly . . . they come off as absolutely ridiculous.

I think the issue of the fish throwing is that it is highly inappropriate for a veterinary association to throw animal corpses around at one of their conventions. It's one thing for customers who are buying the fish at the market, but don't you think that the vets hiring people to throw dead fish around to entertain the vets who are animal doctors and are supposed to respect animal life is inappropriate? The PETA protest was specifically against the veterinarian society's use of the fish throwers as entertainment, and to me, that is not ridiculous but a legitimate complaint.

"At the risk of seeming ridiculous, let me say that the true revolutionary is guided by a great feeling of love. It is impossible to think of a genuine revolutionary lacking this quality ... We must strive every day so that this love of living humanity will be transformed into actual deeds, into acts that serve as examples, as a moving force." --- CHE GUEVARA

Oh, I think exploiting the dead for financial or other purposes is a fairly universal, and quite unflattering, aspect of human nature.

Any self respecting animal rights supporter should have nothing to do with PETA.
They are not only what's evil in the animal rights/ vegan movement but what's evil with "non-profit" orginizations as well. Animal lovers/ vegans for the lvoe of god, start researching PETA. Look at their budgets, how they spend their money and compare the kill ratio of their shelters to other shelters. Start with a google of "peta animal cruelty trial".

I agree a bit. PETA makes the cause look ridiculous, like when they suggested that ice cream be made from human milk. All that does is make people laugh & ignore the true cruelties.
IN DEFENSE OF ANIMALS is good = very sincere & they work hard. Not media hounds like PETA.

I seriously don't understand these ads. I'm a vegetarian by circumstance (health reasons), so I guess I'm not as evolved as PETA people to understand how this ad or the ad with two nearly naked men kissing relates to eating vegetables.

yeah, right. how many 'good people' did che kill and how many have died under fascist military regimes backed by the united states and multinationals over the decades. in the reagan war on el salvador, the whole deal was about the united fruit company and chiquita wanting to keep their slaves making 5¢ an hour, so the rebels were commies, and 125,000 were killed. guatemala's mayan natives stood in the way of american oil and resort concerns, were also called commies and a quarter million were killed. actualy the number was more like 400,000 but the united states would only agree to complicity in the deaths of 250,000... you live in a sea of blood, sir. drink up!

Che would be DISGUSTED by this..PETA likes to use the trendy animal movement that THEY created to bully and offend people who do not subcribe to their stance on meat. I respect them for being the "protectors" of animal rights, but like many other programs that started with good intentions, they have ballooned into a huge self serving gang that wants to shock and seduce people into not eating meat. They are the most Hollywood, The Most Commercial, The Most Celebrity Obessed activist organization on the planet, and THAT is why Che Guevara would have NOTHING to do with a transparent bully based organziation like PETA, even if he was a vegan. There is nothing wrong with a celebrity endorsement, but PETA is not interested in anything or anyone who will not get them press. Sorry vegans but human beings have eaten and survived off of meat since the begining of time. Our ancestors would have died off like the dinosaurs if we did not have meat to keep us going. Please try to think before you give your money to PETA, there are many other animal rights organziations who don't have the luxury of celebrity endorsements who do just as much for animals if not more. PETA is the WALMART of the animals rights movement. DO NOT TRUST THEM.

Why do modern day liberals think this guy is so great? He is a propaganda tool used to Socialize South America. People who are martyred become heroes. If he had lived to an old age people would treat him like Fidel Castro or Stalin. But he was an attractive guy and it helped the t-shirt producers to sell to stupid Marxists.
Here is a couple things the Left's hero did...

Che sidelined black Cubans and mocked those who were part of the revolutionary movement. He once told radio host Luis Pons, “We’re going to do for blacks exactly what blacks did for the revolution. By which I mean: nothing.”

Che personally ordered 700 executions by firing squad, which he supervised at his jungle headquarters in Cuba. He also hosted book burnings, torching thousands of books owned by suspect intellectuals and librarians.

He seems like your average power hungry Fascist/Marxist to me.

RowJimmy, there are so many inaccuracies in your short post… that I am not sure where to begin. Let me educate you:

Che pushed for racially integrating the schools in Cuba, years before they were racially integrated in the United States. He also had a black personal bodyguard that accompanied him everywhere "Pombo". + He spoke out against South African Apartheid in 1964 and then fought SA mercenaries in the Congo.

Che didn't order any more than around 10 executions while in combat. As for La Cabana Che oversaw the appeals of those convicted as war criminals. During thta time around 200 Cubans got capital punishment. Considering the dictator Batista killed 20,000 Cubans with his secret police, this # is quite small.

He was a Marxist, but power hungry men don't give up being the #2 man in a nation to slog through the jungle with walnut sized welts on their body and debilitating asthma.
