Obama Radio And TV Correspondents' Dinner Speech (VIDEO)

Huffington Post   First Posted: 7/20/09 Updated: 5/25/11

AP: President Barack Obama knows a little something about catching flies -- knowledge he says he's using to help win over groups in solving the nation's health care crisis.

"I'm pleased that in our quest to reform the health care system, I have gained the support of the American Medical Association," Obama told the Radio and Television Correspondents' Association dinner Friday night. "It proves true the old expression that it's easier to catch flies with honey. And if honey doesn't work, feel free to use an open palm and a swift, downward wrist motion."

Featuring political and topical humor, the black-tie dinner at the Washington Convention Center was the group's 65th annual gathering of journalists, politicians and their guests.

During an interview for CNBC at the White House on Tuesday, a fly intruded on Obama's conversation with correspondent John Harwood. So Obama waited for the fly to settle, put his hand up and then smacked the insect dead in one try.

Obama told the crowd he is working to repair the financial institutions and auto companies. "But you probably wouldn't understand the concept of troubled industries," he said, "working as you do in radio and television."

But he said Friday's dinner was far better than his appearance at the White House Correspondents Dinner, a higher profile event that typically attracts Hollywood celebrities.

"Why hang out with celebrities when I can spend time with people who make me one?" Obama said.

The president also poked fun at himself and his acerbic chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, who was seen in photos on top of a camel during a trip to Egypt.

"I'm sure you've all seen the pictures of Rahm on that camel," Obama said. "I admit, I was a little nervous about the whole situation. I said at the time, 'This is a wild animal known to bite, kick and spit. And who knows what the camel could do?'"

On a more serious note, Obama concluded his remarks by saying he appreciated the work of broadcasters who bring truth to people and allow people to bring truth to the world. He noted how this was happening in scenes from the current disputed presidential election in Iran.

JibJab.com, a comedy Web site, and the Onion News Network, a parody of a 24-hour TV news network, provided some of the evening's laughs along with John Hodgman, a "Daily Show" contributor who also personifies the PC in Apple commercials.

Sweet Honey in the Rock, a Grammy Award-winning female a cappella ensemble, was also part of the entertainment. First lady Michelle Obama had the group perform in February at the White House.

I HAD A PRESIDENT WHO TALKED WITH ME

I had a president who talked with me.
Allowed me the right to disagree,
To question — and always answered me,
As well as he could — and truthfully.
He talked of adventures; horrors of war;
Of life, its meaning; what love was for.
How each would always need to strive
To improve the world to keep it alive.
Stressed the duty we owe one another
To be aware each man is a brother.
Time runs along, some say I’m wise,
That I look at life through his eyes.
My heart is happy, my mind is free,
I had a president who talked with me.

President Obama looks uncomfortable(but s exy) telling these jokes. Is this type a thing mandatory at these functions?

Who cares?? I'm tired of reading about all the Press events that he's attending. I don't care that Bush went to the same.

Leave the Elitist alone. Go to Penn. or Ohio and eat dinner with those people.

He did pretty good but I wouldn't go as far as saying he has above average humor. When you have good writers anyone can seem funny. Remember the Afred E. Neuman dinner earlier this year. Both McCain and Obama had the place laughing. It was pretty funny when Obama made the joke about rolling over in bed to Brian Williams. The response from the crowd was pretty telling too. It wasn't one of those fall out of the chair responses. More like a mixed response of some laughing and wait did he just say that groans.

UNBELIEVABLE! LOOK AT WHAT GRETA VAN SUSTEREN HAS ON HER BLOGSITE! WONDER WHO IT IS SHE'S CALLING PIGS? COULD IT BE US, THE PEOPLE ON THE LEFT WHO HER BLOGGERS KEEP COMPLAINING TO HER ABOUT? AND AS YOU CAN SEE, SHE SURE CAN'T SPELL!! LOL
You all know that I am a big advocate of the First Amendment and that advocacy has led to the struggle for me to keep this an open forum. I hate it when people are nasty but I also know the dangers in taking away free speech. Yes, people have a First Amendment right to be small. I rely on you all to help with your comments and shame the pigs who show up and post. You know who the pigs are. They are obvious. And yes, the First Amendment is not absolute (you can't falsely yell fire in a crowded theatre.)

Since I did not understand the cultural context of the Nick at Nite show Leave It to the Beavers, I did not get his joke about the Uighurs. I came to US recently and never watched the show. But, I would like to be able to understand the joke, which goes like this: "Nike at Nite is launching a new show called Leave it to the Uighurs." Can some one explain it to me what that means? Thanks.

Stop your obama delusion ... he probably read the thing 1 hour before the event just to make sure he could pull off the jokes ... he doesn't write ANY of his speeches, including his inaugural one!

Probably the first US president with such an acute sense of humour and self-irony.
Kennedy and Lincoln were outstanding rhetorics - but crack a joke? And so well? No way!

Aside from Obama, the President best-known for having a wonderful sense of humor was Abraham Lincoln, the other President from Illinois. For example, once when he was accused of being two-faced, he said, "If I had another face, would I be wearing this one?"
