AP: President Barack Obama knows a little something about catching flies -- knowledge he says he's using to help win over groups in solving the nation's health care crisis.

"I'm pleased that in our quest to reform the health care system, I have gained the support of the American Medical Association," Obama told the Radio and Television Correspondents' Association dinner Friday night. "It proves true the old expression that it's easier to catch flies with honey. And if honey doesn't work, feel free to use an open palm and a swift, downward wrist motion."

Featuring political and topical humor, the black-tie dinner at the Washington Convention Center was the group's 65th annual gathering of journalists, politicians and their guests.

During an interview for CNBC at the White House on Tuesday, a fly intruded on Obama's conversation with correspondent John Harwood. So Obama waited for the fly to settle, put his hand up and then smacked the insect dead in one try.

Obama told the crowd he is working to repair the financial institutions and auto companies. "But you probably wouldn't understand the concept of troubled industries," he said, "working as you do in radio and television."

But he said Friday's dinner was far better than his appearance at the White House Correspondents Dinner, a higher profile event that typically attracts Hollywood celebrities.

"Why hang out with celebrities when I can spend time with people who make me one?" Obama said.

The president also poked fun at himself and his acerbic chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, who was seen in photos on top of a camel during a trip to Egypt.

"I'm sure you've all seen the pictures of Rahm on that camel," Obama said. "I admit, I was a little nervous about the whole situation. I said at the time, 'This is a wild animal known to bite, kick and spit. And who knows what the camel could do?'"

On a more serious note, Obama concluded his remarks by saying he appreciated the work of broadcasters who bring truth to people and allow people to bring truth to the world. He noted how this was happening in scenes from the current disputed presidential election in Iran.

JibJab.com, a comedy Web site, and the Onion News Network, a parody of a 24-hour TV news network, provided some of the evening's laughs along with John Hodgman, a "Daily Show" contributor who also personifies the PC in Apple commercials.

Sweet Honey in the Rock, a Grammy Award-winning female a cappella ensemble, was also part of the entertainment. First lady Michelle Obama had the group perform in February at the White House.

Man, I feel bad the guy has to preside over all of US. We argue and name call so much. Most of the posts sound like 6th grade recess, if that. I'm amazed he still has a sense of humor. No matter what you think of his job, we sure don't seem to like each other sometimes ( my own rantings on other subjects included)

And I totally disagree with myself. What does any of that have to do with the dinner? Just like a Obamite to try to change the subject.

President Obama is just the BEST! He is real, he is brilliant, and I sleep so much better now that there is intelligence back in the White House.
To all those who expected him to fix all the horrors of 8 years of bush in 5 months, I say, get over yourselves.

The period when horrors were allowed to accummulate was longer than 8 years.

Obama had a date with Michelle and had to delay it. The least they can do is appreciate the fact that he showed up.

It was a treat. There is no doubt that the President is charismatic, brilliant and extremely funny. Like Bill Clinton, he is quite irresistible

I wish someone would explain to me why it was ok for these events to have been held for decades and for all past presidents to have been invited and to have attended them, but all of a sudden it's wrong for President Obama to do exactly the same thing. I'm starting to think some people are upset that he's there as the guest of honor - and not as the waiter.

Actually, I believe that this is a theme that underlies many of the "anti-Obama" rhetoric I see on this and other sites. I have detected a huge double standard - the idea that somehow President Obama was voted in to do the hard work (and do it 6 months) but not enjoy the perks that all the other presidents have been able to enjoy.

Absolutely right. And yet Bush was on vacation more than any other president while he flushed this country down the toilet with two wars. No one complained about him using Air Force One. He couldn't even be bothered to land in New Orleans after Katrina...just royally look down on the devastation from above.

I do believe these reactions are thinly veiled racism...Obama should have no leisure time at all. I think a lot of people can't stand to see a black man hold the highest office in the land and all that comes with it. "Who does he think he is,President?"

His African American...a double standard that still exist with some. You may not beleive me but it's true and it will continue through out his presidency. Just reality...

I love it when President Obama tells a joke, pauses, and then laughs. That's the best part.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:42 AM on 06/20/2009

Obama clearly didn't want to be there. He told "sharp elbow" humor that the radio & tv personalities didn't appreciate. But publicly, they will save face by acting like it was just good fun. The First Lady and VP didn't come. Obama left before dinner was served, which surprised event organizers.

He seemed pretty relaxed to me. He did some sharp elbow humor because it was a roast.

If President Obama left before dinner, I am certain it is because there are crisis brewing everywhere and I imagine that he rarely stays to each at many events.

For starters, the jokes were not written by him. And unless you are one of those radio/tv personalities, you have no idea who appreciated what. Secondly, the last dinner was more heavily attended in general and the pres and FL also left that one early.

Stop posting like you know what your talking about!

There are tweets indicating the audience "underappreciated" the humor.

Obama and the FL did eat at the WHCA dinner.

Here's a different take on it. He did great !!

He's got some comedic timing and he enjoys a good laugh. "Sharp elbow" - hmmm, have you ever seen the old tv roasts? President Obama clearly has and the jabbing kind of humor was perfectly appropriate and funny.

He seemed relaxed to me. It appears he didn't put much time into rehearsing it . . . probably because of the crisis in Iran and he didn't have that much time to focus on it.

He has a great sense of humor and enjoys telling jokes. You're reading way too much into this. If anyone was surprised because he left before dinner was served, then they haven't been reading the newspaper or watching TV. Or, on the Internet for that matter.

Riiight, how different he is from the last POTUS

"I am sorry Laura couldn't be here. And I'm sorry Secretary Rumsfeld is not here, either. The guy constantly surprises me. Do you know what Rummy's favorite TV show is? "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy." My Cabinet could take some pointers from watching that show. In fact, I'm going to have the Fab Five do a make over on Ashcroft.

Anyway, it's nice to be with you. A couple of years ago when I was here, I read from my book of "Misarticalations." Fortunately, my verbal phonation and electricution have improved."

I'll take President Obama over Bush any day of the week.

It's so obvious! If someone cannot tell a joke, that person has no business being President.

I propose a constitutional amendment:

Amendment 28
"No person shall be eligible to serve as President unless they can tell a decent knock-knock joke."

Hey Obama - why don't you hire a 'smile for the camera' czar who can do all of these cheezy appearances and the you can actually DO SOME WORK - you know, the stuff the people are paying you to do.

I'm sure it's hard to choose between celebrity and hard work - but you're the guy who wanted the job, right? You did want the job didn't you - or did you just want the big house and the fancy plane?

Did you complain about Bush when he set records for most vacation time? Did you complain about Bush when he was on vacation in Florida when 9/11 hit?

He was warned the previous month with a memo that said DIRECTLY that Bin Laden would attack using airplanes. The cities mentioned were New York, LA and DC.

He did nothing. Too busy taking vacations.

And I'm also guessing you never knew that Bush did these very same roasts each year. If you did know that, did you complain about Bush then?
