AP: President Barack Obama knows a little something about catching flies -- knowledge he says he's using to help win over groups in solving the nation's health care crisis.

"I'm pleased that in our quest to reform the health care system, I have gained the support of the American Medical Association," Obama told the Radio and Television Correspondents' Association dinner Friday night. "It proves true the old expression that it's easier to catch flies with honey. And if honey doesn't work, feel free to use an open palm and a swift, downward wrist motion."

Featuring political and topical humor, the black-tie dinner at the Washington Convention Center was the group's 65th annual gathering of journalists, politicians and their guests.

During an interview for CNBC at the White House on Tuesday, a fly intruded on Obama's conversation with correspondent John Harwood. So Obama waited for the fly to settle, put his hand up and then smacked the insect dead in one try.

Obama told the crowd he is working to repair the financial institutions and auto companies. "But you probably wouldn't understand the concept of troubled industries," he said, "working as you do in radio and television."

But he said Friday's dinner was far better than his appearance at the White House Correspondents Dinner, a higher profile event that typically attracts Hollywood celebrities.

"Why hang out with celebrities when I can spend time with people who make me one?" Obama said.

The president also poked fun at himself and his acerbic chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, who was seen in photos on top of a camel during a trip to Egypt.

"I'm sure you've all seen the pictures of Rahm on that camel," Obama said. "I admit, I was a little nervous about the whole situation. I said at the time, 'This is a wild animal known to bite, kick and spit. And who knows what the camel could do?'"

On a more serious note, Obama concluded his remarks by saying he appreciated the work of broadcasters who bring truth to people and allow people to bring truth to the world. He noted how this was happening in scenes from the current disputed presidential election in Iran.

JibJab.com, a comedy Web site, and the Onion News Network, a parody of a 24-hour TV news network, provided some of the evening's laughs along with John Hodgman, a "Daily Show" contributor who also personifies the PC in Apple commercials.

Sweet Honey in the Rock, a Grammy Award-winning female a cappella ensemble, was also part of the entertainment. First lady Michelle Obama had the group perform in February at the White House.

Lest you forget Bush's appearances at these dinners and the inordinate amount of time (more than any other President) on vacation at his Crawford Ranch. He was truly asleep at the wheel during his entire Presidency and now Obama has to clean up his mess!

Are you kidding me or kidding yourself? He is making jokes...and attending the same identical events previous president attend without your negative responses. There are those that complain the President is doing too much at one time. Then there are those that complain he is not doing enough. The problems is that both complaints are coming out of the same mouths.

You want to talk about corrupt...take notes on the previous administration that lied and got us into an unjust war that shed blood. Precious blood not only of our soldiers...but the Iraqies as well. You want to talk about corrupt...take notes on the previous administration that thought "torture" would be no longer torture by giving it a new name..."enhanced interrogation techniques." You still not convinced...lets look at the previous administration that snubbed their collective noses at Congress which is outlined in the Constitution as a valid branch of power to be recognized...aske Karl Rove, Dick Cheney and everyone that hid behind the "executive privilege" clause even though Cheney pretended he was not apart of the executive branch. A rewritting of history and Constitution..but you of course is worried about Kevin who?

And on Fox, LAST NIGHT!!! Laura ?Ingsomething could only come up with for intense intellectual discussion is that Michelle has 'handlers"....she has her own hairdresser, personal shopper....ghastly!!! Imagine if Michelle didn't have peeps...they still pick on the Carters for being themselves and not turning into Nancy Reagan staid image.

Michelle doesn't use Laura's hairdresser, what a shocker and shame on her. I so miss seeing Barbara Bush outfits, via Laura, on Michelle. We have all gone to hell in a handbasket.

Fox cannot bring their level of intellectual curiosity up to even Palin!

Meanwhile, in true GEORGE BUSH fashion...

The Obama administration has refused to release a Secret Service list of the names of White House visitors, prompting angry comparisons to the Bush administration. The White House is arguing that it sometimes needs to hold secret meetings on sensitive issues, but a federal judge already dismissed that argument in two Bush administration cases.

Chris Hayes, editor of the Nation, told MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann on Tuesday, “Power tends to consolidate. It tends to want to defend itself, and that’s a really insidious tendency and that’s, I think, what we’re seeing here.”

“I don’t even know what motive there is,” Hayes suggested, “other than this basic raw institutional prerogative of, you know, protecting oneself and accruing the maximal amount of power and latitude.”

For all those who seek to make an electronic tool an issue...the exact tool the former Presidents not only used but had their own old fashioned equivalent...known as "speech script that was on the podium for them to use when ever they gave a speech...grow up.

You can convince yourself that this man that has more intellect in his pinky than you have in your entire body based upon how you fail to connect dots in life...(Bush like every other president used speech writers that gave him the speech on written format...the only difference is that President Obama uses an electronic "tool" as oppose to his predecessors that used notes on hardcopy) but you fail to see that because of your eager desire to pretend President Obama is not smart. Are you kdding me or yourself. You are in great denial...I would love to see you engage him in a debate...nevermind...that would be too painful to watch.

Where's the other video? There were two only hours ago...with a different description. Where's the joke about flies, honey, vinegar and a swift slap?

Funny...this is my very first post, and while it may sound like I'm a hater...I'm not. I love this site...support Obama...think Hannity and Rush and O'Reilly have completely eroded their credibility...but I'm telling you...there were two videos! What was said in the second half that we're now worried is going to make Obama the new Letterman. (As in target.)

I'm SO confused.

I thought his "roasts" and jokes were really good. I'm disappointed as I usually am with the media and how they are incapable of laughing at themselves. I saw some chuckling, but generally, the nervous tense grips they had on their napkins said it all. I'm proud of my President, his winning smile, outstanding sense of humor, and the hard work he is doing for me. I don't approve of absolutely everything he's doing or not doing, but I'll take it over and above the last 8 years of sheer hell.

Thank you Mr. President for saving my life, for without your bailouts, I would have lost totally my 401K and pension. I also like to thank you for saving the auto company, for you have saved my father's pension and health insurance. If you Mr. President had allowed the auto company to liquidate, everybody would have lost their pension, retirement , 401K and health Insurance. That is what the Media is not telling you.

Companies didn't used to be able to steal pensions just because of bankruptcy. Someone needs to reinstate the old laws.

Pensions may be a lot of money, but they don't belong to the company.

I resent that our taxpayer money is going directly to your health insurance, when there's so many of us that don't have access to health care, even though we work, not to mention the thousands who have lost their insurance because their jobs were lost and they didn't get a bailout. Maybe you could say thank you by supporting single-payer. Enjoy your pension and your 401K on my dime -- there are thousands of us that don't have that either. And your company went bankrupt anyway.

You seem to think that things couldn't have been any worse. Imagine if GM had gone bankrupt in an uncontrolled way, or that there had been massive insurance company and bank failures - how bad off would have been then? Suppose unemployment was 30% rather than 10 percent? It could have been like 1933 with soup kitchens, tent villages and massive homeless. Things could have been MUCH worse, but of course you can't see that.

you do not understand the meaning, the double meaning of the jokes that Obama have said.

He have made the joke, especially for all opposition to his ideas to close Guantanamo and to free all the innocent.

Nobody laugh when he said the jokes about Palau or Chinese's, just after, he alone, smile and made a little laugh, that start to became a trade mark for Obama, It was, strange to fell the inconfortable smile of journalist.
They have all guilts in this process. It is, if they are the sand in the machine.

That´s why, Obama have said, all the jokes with double meaning.
