A Night Out With Betty White

Betty White, 87, and Anne Fletcher, the 43-year-old director of "The Proposal," a comedy with Ms. White that opened June 19, had become fast friends during the shoot. Ms. White, best known for her roles in "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and "The Golden Girls," wanted to catch up with Ms. Fletcher before starting her next movie.

But you don't catch up with Ms. White as you much as you serve as part of a comedy routine. To wit: Ms. Fletcher, nibbling on a dainty egg salad sandwich, had a question for her new buddy. "Is there anything left that you would really like to do?" she asked.

"Robert Redford," Ms. White answered instantaneously.

Over the years I managed to meet a lot of Hollywood people, and Ms. White was one of my all time favorites. She is so classy, and so friendly, it is hard to put into words.

She was the saucy office sexpot on Mary Tyler Moore. She was Blanche Devoreaux before there was a Blanche Devoreaux. She's always had that ribald sense of humour, Rose Nyland was an aberration. Too bad you're so close-minded that you demand an actress stay in character for 20 years so as not to offend your tender sentimentality.
