A Night Out With Betty White

Betty White, 87, and Anne Fletcher, the 43-year-old director of "The Proposal," a comedy with Ms. White that opened June 19, had become fast friends during the shoot. Ms. White, best known for her roles in "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and "The Golden Girls," wanted to catch up with Ms. Fletcher before starting her next movie.

But you don't catch up with Ms. White as you much as you serve as part of a comedy routine. To wit: Ms. Fletcher, nibbling on a dainty egg salad sandwich, had a question for her new buddy. "Is there anything left that you would really like to do?" she asked.

"Robert Redford," Ms. White answered instantaneously.

I can't think of anyone I'd rather spend a night out with.
Recently, I watched some of the old Password shows (youtube password/betty white) and she'd look up at Alan Ludden with a twinkle and he'd look down at her with the same twinkle. She looked so pearls and afternoon dress but one look in those eyes and you knew you'd love to know what went on during the commercials.

I saw The Proposal yesterday and loved it. It's wonderful. Of course Betty steals every scene she's in. But Sandra and Ryan are pitch perfect too.

As much as I enjoyed this interview, I think it'd be a hoot to read the parts that were "unprintable" - Betty White has been one of my favorite actresses/comediennes since the original Password and MTM. She is one of those rare people who can be bawdy (what a great word!) and classy at the same time.
