For those folks who love the look of Bo, which I really do, but cannot find one, a poodle/terrier mix would look very much like him. Poodles, unlike the poofed and pomped show cuts they sport, are really water dogs. They are very good hunting dogs and can actually climb up on trees. They are probably humiliated by their reputation and show cuts. I have never owned a poodle, but my friends that do love them and just let them grow their coats out. I have owned a terrier and they are a hoot and have lots of personality. Also, the cute muzzle Bo has.
I hope that popularity and demand does not ruin the breed. Back in the 1920s and '30s, the cocker spaniel was inbred and ruined because of popular demand. Is there a law against unscrupulous breeders?
Two grand would take care of a lot of pound puppies.
Amazing how those dogs have adapted despite being quite blind...
I hope these poor dogs don't go the way of Dalmation's (after the 101 remake with Glenn Close) when they're no longer "hip". To buy a dog as a way of garnering attention for yourself is just sad.

They're actually lovely animals, spirited, loyal, fun-loving and non-shedding. They're a great size for families w/children. Even if they're in shelters, they'll be adopted. Nope, in a couple of years shelters will still be crammed with pitbulls and pit mixes.
I already posted this comment here just 2 weeks after BO became part of the Presidential family, but within 2 weeks I already knew of 3 people who bought this kind of dog. One had already been through 4 dogs in 2 years, 2 died, one they abandon, and one they still had, and now have two because when the president took in a dog, they had to too! I fear he will be destine for the pound soon to. Oh, and 2 of the 3 named their water dog, Bo. The other named him O'Bo because the owner is a musician. Im predicting again, within the next 2 years, there will be articles written on how Portuguese water dogs are flooding the pounds and rescue centers with abandon, abused , and given up dogs. I think if someone where to open a Portuguese national rescue center now and had good connections with some of the Ivy Greed wealthy, then when this happens they could be in a great position to get a couple hundred million in bailout taxpayer money!!!

Fake breeders making fake claims about their concern for the breed while breeding the dogs artificially to another one because of certain characteristics. I've been to these snobby kennels, the only saving grace is the dogs eternal sense of optimism.
BTW in only 3 cases did i find the breeders worthy of the companionship of the dogs they were breeding. At $1500 and up for a dog, it's the breeders who need to answer my questions.

i'm glad that portie owners are being so particular about who can own the dogs. nothing irritates me more w/ dog owners than ones who buy a dog only to send them back or drop them off at the pound. sounds like portie owners are trying to weed out this problem ahead of time.

So I'm feeling all sorry for the woman who had survived breast cancer and wanted a specific kind of purebred dog to make her feel better . . . . . until I read that she got the dog and GAVE IT BACK because of a small problem that made it less valuable?
