I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Cameron Diaz

Cameron Diaz graced the cover of "Marie Claire" this month to promote her upcoming film "My Sister's Keeper," but spent more time discussing her commitment to the environment:

"It's the planet, you know what I mean? She should be the one--she should be a star. How do we make this little planet of ours a big star? I want everybody to know who she is."

For the cover story, Diaz invited "Marie Claire" staffers to travel around the country with her while she worked on her documentary about what environmental worries plague Americans the most. The result is a short and sweet video in which Diaz questions everyone from a man in supermarket parking lot to a White House special advisor about their hopes and fears for the planet.

Ms Diaz needs to do a lot more. It is quite reasonable to believe that she is one of the greatest causes of global warming. She is so hot she can steam my screen from thousands of miles away! That is global warming!

Why is it that self-proclaimed environmentalists hardly ever speak up about the best thing an individual can do to save the planet: going vegan

I find it ironic that Diaz asks some animals if they believe they have a right to clean air for a cutesy clip...but what about their right to live without suffering? Question that! Does she know what slaughter factory her leather jacket and boots came from?

My experience of vegatarians is they generate more bodily greenhouse gas that anyone else!
Not sure if there is a proposed tax for that?

By the way, I'm sure you don't care but in fact all human activity contributes only a tiny fraction of all the greenhouse gas, most Co2 released into the atmos each year is from natural respiration.

i dearly love you ms, diaz. our planet is going thru a definite change. however, what we do not realize. is this has probably happened before. the big guy made this for us, he knows what it takes. he does expect us to be good stewards. there are way more important issues than what is happening in the planet. you are a very influential young women. what is happening to the american blue collar worker is atrocious. i continue to respectfully adore you.

If planet earth could only show some side boob we would worship her. And the Oscar for Best Planet goes to... Planet Earth to pose for Playboy... Dr. Phil will talk to Planet Earth about her dysfunctional climate system, can rehab help?... Earth and Moon split over alleged affair...

"It's the planet, you know what I mean? She should be the one--she should be a star. How do we make this little planet of ours a big star? I want everybody to know who she is."

Unfortunately what Ms. Cameron does is to bring a light-hearted, ditsyness to a very serious subject. This discussion must be about substance - not style. There is a difference between bringing attention to a cause and bringing attention to a celebrity - this is the latter and only serves as a temporary distraction.

Wow- I was skeptical of the United Nations because of their political stance and lack of scientific principles.

But now I'm a believer, this chick obviously as an uncommon grasp of the scientific complexities here.

I like this, but I differ with Diaz re: her fear of humans becoming extinct on this planet. I don't see this as a problem. Humans are the problem. The planet would be a much better, much cleaner, much happier place without us. Human extinction is not necessarily a bad thing. Get rid of of the humans and the problem goes away.

Wrong. Humans are not the problem, we are just most advanced species here.

The problem will not go away if we disappear. On opposite, solutions of planet problems would get delayed. Another species would take our place in a few million years.

Sooner or later it will be up to us to conserve other species from any future (natural) disasters.

Having said that, it is of course not for a celebs to talk about this problems. Number of celeb-driven headers on HP is not healthy; extremely bad taste.

People are the problem. The problems discussed would go away fairly quickly in evolutionary time scales if there were no people. The mass of decomposing plastic in the ocean. Toxins from agriculture, industry, and domestic use in the air, water, and soil. These are building up now because they are persistant chemicals and we are using more and more of them as the population goes up, but they would break down eventually. The best way to protect species is to not reduce their numbers and not crowd them into small areas where a single disaster can kill them all but that is exactly what we are doing.

I agree. Nature doesn't care if any given species survives or not. That is why well over 90% of them go extinct. Some 22 species of early hominids did go extinct and early Homo sapiens got very low in numbers at one point in our evolutionary history. Species that do seem to prevail and last a long time like lichens, bees and slime molds learn to form symbiotic and cooperative relationships with each other and/or other species. We cannot even agree on a plan to provide for our common health care.

Nature is Nature, and the word 'care' does not apply here.

It is up to us to care or not. Special that you call "seem to prevail" did not prevail at all.

I get sick and tired of the people who complain about who the "messenger" is on any important subject and do nothing but put them down when they are at least doing something to draw attention to the problems existing in our world today. Doubtful these "whiners" would even lend credence to the average Joe or even bother to read what they have written to bring problems to light. These people are a part of the problem to begin with.

Get a clue. When someone as irritating as Cameron Diaz speaks for the planet, people tune out! She is ineffective! Besides, if you need Cameron Diaz or any other celeb to tell you the planet is dying, you need help.
