Financial Times:

Russia is ready to dramatically cut its nuclear stockpiles in a new arms pact with the United States if Washington meets Russia's concerns over missile defence, President Dmitry Medvedev said on Saturday.

"We are ready to reduce by several times the number of nuclear delivery vehicles compared with the START-1 pact," he told a news conference in Amsterdam.

We should do a 50% cut in our Nuclear Warheads now is the time if the President were serious he would have already recommended this 50% cut and not talk of complete nuclear disarmament...

The cost of maintaining this huge arsenals is ridiculous we have 10,000 strategic warhead the Russians from 5,500 to 7,000....

That's not tactical or smaller warheads but the large strategic warheads, these are huge multi-megaton devices and in Russia's case as well as much of ours, MRV'D or multiple reentry vehicle devices the Russians have up to ten warheads per missile..our average less..but much more accurate...

The Russians warheads are the largest generally in the world..what they lacked in accuracy they made up for in megatons, they have some many that are 10 megatons or more, 1 megaton is equal to 1,000,000 tons of TNT....not to mention the gamma rays, or radiation from them kills many of them after their use....

When they're short of funds is when their arsenal is most dangerous to us. Security decreases and the chance of nukes being sold to third parties increases.

Bush making enemies of everyone for the last 8 years doesn't help either.

And more news: we are broke too, and - hopefully - also want to talk arms reductions.

The Russians aren't broke. There economy has bounced back since the fall of the USSR.

The Russians are trying to tank the dollar and with it the US economy.

The Russians, Chinese, Indians and Brazillians are not our friends.

I say good. Up the ante and cut our arsenal even more. I know the deal for them is about our missile defense (we should scale that back too). But, for any nation, a large nuclear arsenal and the upkeep and security it requires is a ridiculous rabbit hole of unnecessary expenditure and a source of mistrust.

Terrific news , especially after the near collapse or US/Ruskie relations under Bushco , due to his bogus , uneccessary and provocative (& overtly 'stupid') 'so-called' EU missile shield.

They're just using it as a carrot against the missile shield in Poland. They've tried many different options to get the U.S. to scrap the implementation. This is plan H.

sound like good news to me,because, nukes cost a lot of damage.I just don't know why countries need that many nuclear weapons.for the kind of war we are fighting nukes are useless. each side should keep about a 100 of them.

It's about time they admitted they are bankrupt. They discovered that it takes MONEY and LABOR to pay for all that stuff that glows in the dark. Plus, they are still dealing with Chernobyl. .

Um, we're kind of bankrupt too.

We didn't win the Cold War. We just didn't lose it as quickly as they did.

Russia has been pushing the US to renew our arms reduction treaties before the global recession kicked in.

Russia seeks to reach new agreements with the United States on the reduction of strategic weapons and decreasing the number of strategic weapons of both countries to a level lower than SALT II.

http://www.bjreview.com.cn/world/txt/2008-06/28/content_130183_3.htm

Prime Minister Vladimir V. Putin said yesterday that he expected that the new administration would be more willing than the Bush's administration had been to discuss extending or replacing the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, which expires next year. The treaty has significantly cut American and Russian nuclear arsenals.

"We hope that the new leadership of the United States will be more constructive, and will help us come to a mutually acceptable solution," Putin said.
