I Like ItI Don’t Like It

AP: WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama said Saturday that current financial rules exploit consumers and he put critics of his proposed overhaul on notice: "While I'm not spoiling for a fight, I'm ready for one."

Obama used his weekly radio and Internet address to defend his recent proposal, which is intended to prevent a repeat of the breakdown that has sent the U.S. economy reeling. But such major changes face a fight in Congress and opposition from some leaders in the banking and insurance industries.

In the address, Obama focused on a consumer watchdog office that he wants to set up.

"This is essential," Obama said. "For this crisis may have started on Wall Street. But its impacts have been felt by ordinary Americans who rely on credit cards, home loans and other financial instruments."

The Consumer Financial Protection Agency would take over oversight of mortgages, requiring that lenders give customers the option of "plain vanilla" plans with clear and affordable terms.

"It will have the power to set tough new rules so that companies compete by offering innovative products that consumers actually want and actually understand," Obama said. "Those ridiculous contracts _ pages of fine print that no one can figure out _ will be a thing of the past. You'll be able to compare products, with descriptions in plain language, to see what is best for you."

More broadly, Obama's changes would begin to reverse the easing on federal regulations pressed by President Ronald Reagan in the 1980s. Democratic leaders in Congress are promising legislation will get passed this year, but that depends in part on how Congress answers big questions about the overhaul, including the role of the Federal Reserve.

"I welcome a debate about how we can make sure our regulations work for businesses and consumers," Obama said. "But what I will not accept _ what I will vigorously oppose _ are those who do not argue in good faith."

By that, Obama said, he meant those who defend the status quo at any cost. He didn't name any people or organizations, but said special interests are already mobilizing to fight change. He called that typical Washington.

"These are the interests that have benefited from a system which allowed ordinary Americans to be exploited," Obama said. The president said he would stand up for his plans, saying: "While I'm not spoiling for a fight, I'm ready for one. The most important thing we can do to put this era of irresponsibility in the past is to take responsibility now."

Lofty goal, but the real consumer protection will come from a well regulated Wall street. Prez Obama gave that fight up by avoiding a tough fundamental change in financial regulations. His consumer protection seems marginal at best if not downright hollow. Mr Obama, why aren't you fighting for a real reform?

People are greedy and they will cheat if given the chance, especially if they think they can get away with it. What's wrong with putting in rules that don't allow people to cheat? We have rules for baseball and football to make sure people don't cheat, why not business as well?

Obama has sold us down the drain for nothing other than instant adoration. The sooner we liberals realise that the better for all of us.

The "Consumer Protection Agency" is just a fig leaf to cover the administration's behind.

They spent billions to rescue big financial firms but let them off the hook (by letting them repay TARP funds) without any improvement in credit flow to main street.

If anything, with the whole stress test gimmick and the resulting ratios FDIC imposed on community banks they effectively choked off last remaining sources of funds to small biz.

Now for the big financial firms to actually recover (different from rescue) they have to screw main street with as high an interest rate as they can. The CPA is just a cover to deal with the backlash that will come from that.

Stimulus was a real bust. Compare it to results of Chinese stimulus. If he did not have what it took to front load the stimulus, he should have gone with republican tax cut plan - as horrid as it was, would still have been better than this mess of long term spending and tax cut crap.

My bet on healthcare is he will do the same - neither here (liberal) nor there (conservative) but worst of both (big bills) with little for mainstreet.

Man what a disappointment he turned out to be. Never thought I would wish I supported Hillary.

Our only hope is to BREAK the EL1TE Oligarchy's hold on our Congress and our Banking System:

1. Reform Campaign Funding
2. Audit the FED and remove Bank Control of the FEDERAL RESERVE
____________________________________

TIME TO REFORM CORRUPTION IN CAMPAIGN FUNDING SYSTEM

Simple Solution to PROTECT OUR Congress Members Votes so votes are NOT sold to Highest Bidders:

1. Setup a Government Contribution Acceptance and Funds Distribution under Citizens' Control
2. Funnel all Political Contributions through this agency audited annually
3. Uses strict formulas for allocating funds to House+Senate Members
4. "Blindly" distribute lump sums twice per year to Politicians - No KNOWN SOURCES of funds!
5. Reserve part of funds for those New Candidates that meet campaign funding criteria
6. Two? Term Limits for Senators
7. Four? Term Limits for House Members

After living in California for 25 years, I can tell you to a certainty that term limits do not help. Actually, they reduce professionalism in government, with devastating results.

Some of your other suggestions have merit, especially if you add really draconian penalties for those who attempt to circumvent the reforms, and mandate contributions of equal time for all candidates during election season by all media outlets.

I signed it too. I also sent it to everyone on my email list. You should sign it too AND PASS IT ON.

Senators Leahy, Durbin, Schumer and Sanders all have it right.

On Huffington post you will find the article written by US Senator Bernie Sanders and a link to Bernie's petition too.

Sign both petitions. We need 200 million signatures on these two petitions to show President Obama and Congress that we want a better health care system.

RIP: FREE MARKET.
BORN 1776, DlED 2009.
Free Market always was a good soul, willing to help others who worked hard and had financial smarts. Know to friends as the best economy in the world. Unfortunately, all good things must end, and in Free Market's case, it was an unfortunate tragedy: The elected leader decided Free Market wasn't needed and slowly kiIIed it, through buying large portions of different industries. The final blow came from the elected leader's decision to enact a Consumer Protection Agency, thus taking the Free out of Free Market... Now of course the different elected leaders throughout Free Market's life helped a great deal, and Free Market was having a slight heaIth issue, so it was understandable that the elected leader gave some help. The probIem came, however, when there was too much help, and that it was shoved down Free Market's throat in the form of pork, Free Market's biggest allergy. This lead to the down spiraling health of Free Market, and the eventual passing on. God rest Free Market's soul, and know that we will miss it greatly.

After you slow your heart rate down, you'll realize that Reagan's great 'trickle down' experiment was not free at all but had enormous benefits and aid for large businesses while small businesses continually subsidized the rich. I don't need to tell you this, you can look at the tax code and figure it out yourself. People are greedy, even large businesses

"Free Market without regulation"

You don't understand what free market means... There is no regulation.

What people fail to realize is that our economy was doing fine without regulations. Of course there were some people who played the system a bit, but then the government tried to get involved to stop that from happening. What then ensued was a massive tightening down in regulation, with which lots of companies had troubles adhering to, and then needed a bailout. The saddest thing is that those bailouts are the biggest Ponzi scheme ever... People are getting paid for doing lousy work.

You know, for the past 2 decades I have been screaming from the mountain tops that our government needs to go back to being OUR government, not that of everyone else on this planet ... and now we are reaping what we sowed. How much $$$$$ have we poured into aid to countries overseas, to wars and strikes waged, to investments to prop up foreign economies? And what are we going to get in the end for it all? A big thank you? Try a big and total collapse of this system. And then I ask, and seriously so ... who on earth will bail US out?!

What we really don't need is dishonest, greedy big business disregarding our health and safety in order to maximize their profits. There is one way to keep them from recklessly doing so, and that is to use the social institutions of the nation to punish them when they do. The President is proposing exactly that. He is right, and I hope he wins this one. Otherwise, all of us except the corporate class lose.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:00 AM on 06/21/2009

mortgage relief...the already past the disaster time (God help those families). By the time it gets functioning, we will be well into second wave (commercial mortgage)- maybe it will come in time for it.

Stress test gimmick killed the last source of funds to small business by imposing all kinds of restrictions of how much of what can a small bank lend. Real estate is what most small banks accept for collateral. And now thats not an option. What else is left for small business to pledge to any sane small bank ?

Now SBA is the only show in town to beg for money to keep business running (reeling from the lines of credit withdrawn, etc). There is a year to 18 month waiting time before one gets in front of a loan offer.

I am still in disbelief they let the big banks repay TARP money. I was dumb and stupid enough to believe the point was to restore credit flow and help main street.

All they did is tie up the small banks from lending and unlease the big fat cats on main street to feed on our rotting dead bodies.

President Obama, you mentioned the status quo forces are already working to water down the consumer protection change you want to put in place.

It's time to have your surrogates continually point out those people who work to undermine this change as well as Healthcare. Because they have no proposal to counter or improve upon yours, they will fall back on well rehearsed and memorized language and phrases developed for them. The language is "LUNTZ-SPEAK" and everyone should become familiar with his well developed epistle aimed at confusion, brainwashing and use of scary words and terms :

An example: "we recommend the phrase “government takeover” rather than “government run” or “government controlled.”

Will Americans allow themselves to be manipulated again as they have been for 8 years +???
