I Like ItI Don’t Like It

AP: WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama said Saturday that current financial rules exploit consumers and he put critics of his proposed overhaul on notice: "While I'm not spoiling for a fight, I'm ready for one."

Obama used his weekly radio and Internet address to defend his recent proposal, which is intended to prevent a repeat of the breakdown that has sent the U.S. economy reeling. But such major changes face a fight in Congress and opposition from some leaders in the banking and insurance industries.

In the address, Obama focused on a consumer watchdog office that he wants to set up.

"This is essential," Obama said. "For this crisis may have started on Wall Street. But its impacts have been felt by ordinary Americans who rely on credit cards, home loans and other financial instruments."

The Consumer Financial Protection Agency would take over oversight of mortgages, requiring that lenders give customers the option of "plain vanilla" plans with clear and affordable terms.

"It will have the power to set tough new rules so that companies compete by offering innovative products that consumers actually want and actually understand," Obama said. "Those ridiculous contracts _ pages of fine print that no one can figure out _ will be a thing of the past. You'll be able to compare products, with descriptions in plain language, to see what is best for you."

More broadly, Obama's changes would begin to reverse the easing on federal regulations pressed by President Ronald Reagan in the 1980s. Democratic leaders in Congress are promising legislation will get passed this year, but that depends in part on how Congress answers big questions about the overhaul, including the role of the Federal Reserve.

"I welcome a debate about how we can make sure our regulations work for businesses and consumers," Obama said. "But what I will not accept _ what I will vigorously oppose _ are those who do not argue in good faith."

By that, Obama said, he meant those who defend the status quo at any cost. He didn't name any people or organizations, but said special interests are already mobilizing to fight change. He called that typical Washington.

"These are the interests that have benefited from a system which allowed ordinary Americans to be exploited," Obama said. The president said he would stand up for his plans, saying: "While I'm not spoiling for a fight, I'm ready for one. The most important thing we can do to put this era of irresponsibility in the past is to take responsibility now."

Say, while you are at it, please crack down on credit reporting agencies who list wrong information and refuse to change it.

Also, it might be nice to place some sort of regulations on bill collectors who harass people by phone. We received a new phone number o few yeaes ago after a move and the calls were non-stop for the person who had the phone number before we did. Of course, they never believed us.,

Dear President Obama:

Until you restore an individual consumer's right to sue a corporation, you can kiss my radical egalitarian a**.

Most Sincerely,

An Extremely Disgruntled Citizen

From what I read, he wants to make loan plans more readable. Great!

Legible loan details are a welcome change. Now, what about those insane interest rates that are hurting people NOW, with current loans and credit cards they already have? This legislation he is fighting for seems to apply to new loans only.

I'm skeptical, but reserving my opinion until I see the actual legislation.

Remain skeptical...his political capital he built up is waning fast...substantial difference between how people feel about him as a person and his policies...he could have used that good will to substantial advantage ages ago...the more he continues to speechify and get nothing accomplished, the more his personal approval will start to drop to the numbers who aren't at all happy with what he has done so far...

If he talked less and did more, he would have people backing his ideas in huge numbers...

America is a can-do nation...not a can-talk one...

This so called "overhaul" really does nothing. Read Robert Reich's article on his blog about this. The real question is, is he ready for a fight over health care. Without a viable public option there won't be any real change. As usual, the senate dems are backpedaling on this. This is the one issue Obama can't compromise on. What he does on health care will define his legacy. I like Obama and I'm hoping for the best but I'm starting to have serious doubts over whether or not he has the stomach for a bloody confrontation with the most powerful lobbying force in Washington. That's exactly what it's going to take. It may take all of his political capital to get this done but he has to. Millions of us are counting on him. You can't give in Mr. President. Not on this one.

What is the big problem, it's not like their asking much of banks, other than to have modest reasonable safeguards.

I never heard the President when the usury bill was going down in flames or the mortgage cramdown bill to extend the same benefits to single home owners that multiple home owners have under the bankruptcy law.

There was no fighting just slience.

We've neede regulations of the banks for years. I just opened a credit card bill that was 9% interest for 5 years, not late on my bills, never have been and the interest rate is now 29%. The banks have manipulated our mortgage, credit cards, student loans, etc. for years. It's time that banks, with their offshore accounts, cut a little slack to the people that are paying $4.50 for a loaf of bread right now.....I'm referring to BANK OF AMERICA!!!!! Made the angy call to BOA and we have an understanding, but if they keep this up....lots of Chapter 7 for those that are making their house payments, but have a hard time feeding their children, etc.

Just put up a fight for public health care. Just find some jobs for people. Just prosecute war crimes. Just stand up for the Constitution. This is a second tier issue.

And by "fight over new consumer protections," he means, "I'm ready to utterly cave even further to corporate interests."

You republs. would like that I'm sure. It is amazing how you guys are so against american citizens. You loved the last 8 yrs. of lies and give everything to corporate america and ship jobs aboard for greater profit. It is great having a Pres. that is willing to fight for citizens and not for more wars an corporate greed. Change has come to America and the congress has to understand that too.

Isn't it something... our President has to "fight" to get consumer protections. Every politican who votes against this is voting against his fellow citizens. Every vote against this is a yes vote to 27% interest rates on charge cards, to banks who would rather see you foreclose on your house instead of refinance. Haven't we seen what happens when there are no regulations or protections for citizens?

Consumer protection is essential. People shouldn't have to read through pages and pages of legalese just to take out a credit card. There needs to be common sense regulations. The country has fallen into the hands of corrupt banks and lending institutions and it is time for them to be read the riot act.

I'm all for fighting for consumer protection, but how about priorities?
1. HEALTHCARE.
2. Out of Bush's entanglements (iran and afghanistan)
3. Save the earth (the northeast is almost under water).

yes. spoil for fight but first things first.

Clearly there exists a compelling need to simplify the unnecessary complexity of borrowing fiat money.
What the average American does not know about is the difference between simple interest and compound interest. If they did they would revolt against compound interest since it is usurious in the extreme.

There is no rationale financial or economic reason for compound interest, other than exploitation. The lender, normally banks or financial institutions, claim they must maximize profits which justifies compound interest charges. However, they have no real opportunity costs. They could not earn a consistently higher ROI lending to another sector, unless they were prepared to completely abandon the housing market and invest solely in equities.

Taking advantage of buyers then becomes the norm, because they get away with the "common practice" of compound interest charges.

The President's objectives do not really look out for the consumer. If they did they would consider the above. What will likely occur is an explosion of government personnel, regulations on private real estate interests, and growing conflict of interest bewteen regulators and the banks. Since the banks have the money, they will continue to make the rules.

You could've made the point in a paragraph, and further define terms like compound/simple interest and ROI for your readers so that you dont sound so overbloated and hot airish.

Or you could look up the terms if you don't understand them... He's actually 100% right about compound interest, which basically charges interest on your interest. Imagine paying taxes on your taxes. Or having service charges for processing your service charges... well, maybe that last one already happens. :)
