AP: WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama said Saturday that current financial rules exploit consumers and he put critics of his proposed overhaul on notice: "While I'm not spoiling for a fight, I'm ready for one."

Obama used his weekly radio and Internet address to defend his recent proposal, which is intended to prevent a repeat of the breakdown that has sent the U.S. economy reeling. But such major changes face a fight in Congress and opposition from some leaders in the banking and insurance industries.

In the address, Obama focused on a consumer watchdog office that he wants to set up.

"This is essential," Obama said. "For this crisis may have started on Wall Street. But its impacts have been felt by ordinary Americans who rely on credit cards, home loans and other financial instruments."

The Consumer Financial Protection Agency would take over oversight of mortgages, requiring that lenders give customers the option of "plain vanilla" plans with clear and affordable terms.

"It will have the power to set tough new rules so that companies compete by offering innovative products that consumers actually want and actually understand," Obama said. "Those ridiculous contracts _ pages of fine print that no one can figure out _ will be a thing of the past. You'll be able to compare products, with descriptions in plain language, to see what is best for you."

More broadly, Obama's changes would begin to reverse the easing on federal regulations pressed by President Ronald Reagan in the 1980s. Democratic leaders in Congress are promising legislation will get passed this year, but that depends in part on how Congress answers big questions about the overhaul, including the role of the Federal Reserve.

"I welcome a debate about how we can make sure our regulations work for businesses and consumers," Obama said. "But what I will not accept _ what I will vigorously oppose _ are those who do not argue in good faith."

By that, Obama said, he meant those who defend the status quo at any cost. He didn't name any people or organizations, but said special interests are already mobilizing to fight change. He called that typical Washington.

"These are the interests that have benefited from a system which allowed ordinary Americans to be exploited," Obama said. The president said he would stand up for his plans, saying: "While I'm not spoiling for a fight, I'm ready for one. The most important thing we can do to put this era of irresponsibility in the past is to take responsibility now."

Mr. President I don't believe you.

I believe you have no clue as to what you need to do and it's starting to show. I do wish you would stand up and fight on:

single payer....but you've already said you won't

our civil rights....habeas corpus Sir?

The Banksters...'too big to fail...' wish I was.

'Don't ask, don't tell...'...but then black folks are afraid of Teh Gay are they not?

Pouring more troops and Ca$h down the ratholes of Iraq and Afghanistan....but you've got to take care of the MIC don't you?

I've got it. Why don't you fly off to Ireland or some such and make a speech. It's becoming increasingly apparent that that is just about all you are good at.

What a horrific mistake we mad in electing you.

Would you rather have McCain? I don't agree with Obama on everything, either, but I'm glad he's the prez and not McCain.

We would not have all this debt with McCain...we would not have Bailouts...We would have lower taxes...and with a FREE MARKET..we would be recovering now

There WERE other choices.

Kucinich was the obvious one that everyone overlooked.

You didn't even vote for him and 70% of Americans like him. So it sounds like your party is on the outs. Oh wait - it is.

Yes, a futile and small man often rejoices in the trouble of others.

Hey, that can be the new slogan for the Republican Party.

Ahhhh, this takes me back. The sun was shinning, wind blowing through my hair, It was the summer of 1977. The start of the Carter Admin., and the longest 4 years of the nations econmic life since the great depression. Soon to follow were sky rocketing inflation, a worthless dollar, high interest rates and 8% unemployment. We later discovered, in 1981, when we elected a real President that Carter was an id!ot and his policies, utter failures. Ahhhhh, this really takes me back.

Funny, wasn't it Nixon who instituted wage/price controls because of the inflation? Apparently obamanomics' hair was blowing on another planet.

Its amazing how many things Carter get blamed for that turn out to have happened in an administration either before or after his.

Until I did research on my own...I thought he was a 'peanut farmer'! That's a testament the informative nature of the 'fourth estate'.
The man is probably the most well educated president we've had..ever. Just think where we would be today had his progressive energy plan been adopted.

He sure did, and in the face of sky rocketing inflation, a worthless dollar, sky high interest rates, and mounting job losses carter refused to lift them. Reagan lifted them almost immediately upon taking office in 81'.

If we listened to Carter on energy, we would not be in this mess today. Because we followed St. Ronnie, the pied piper, we had a financial calamity of a magnitude that we have not seen for 70 years. Grow up and learn that we have to take responsibility for ourselves. The rest of the world it tired of our trashing them and bullying them into supporting our fantasies.

Generally, the first term of a president is when one sees the effects of the previous incumbent's actions.

President Pan's first term was largely the legacy of President Bubba.

President Neo's first term is the legacy of the disastrous policies of President Pan.

Only in fairy tales like the works of Ayn Rand does the economy turn around on a dime.

I agree that this IS one fight that needs fighting, but NOT anywhere near as badly as the fight for health care. I'd LOVE to see Obama put his gloves on for a no holds barred fight on either a strong public option, or even better single payer health care. If that fight is fought in public Republicans & corporatist Dems will be finished for decades... Mr. President we need you to stand with US & truly fight for US. If you stand & truly fight for the people we'll know it. We are not living in 1993 any more & people have learned to identify truth from fiction. No matter how hard the corporate message tries to spin the message on health care we ALL know that the real way to fix it is to put the corporate for profit health care industry out of business. Doctors know it, people know it the corporations know it & our elected officials know it. Let's stop pussyfooting around & finally say it & fix it. YES WE CAN Mr. President. The consequences of failure will be a progressive common sense 3rd party & a one term Obama Presidency...

I suppose once one has 'made it', the rest can go to he l l.

What?? Did you READ the article? Or, hey--just push the play button and listen to the YouTube clip.

The people of this country have been used and abused by the greedy few with complex legal language.

I'm all for a "plain vanilla" plan to benefit all Americans when dealing with contracts and other financial issues. It's long overdue.

If we are "not following" the policies of the past 8 years THEN WHY ARE WE...
Still increasing our military and actions in the middle east.
Still duplicating the practicies of illegal spying on Americans and not prosecuting the criminal crimes committed by Bush's administration in the past 8 years.
Why have we given the Global Financial Empire and Global Auto Corporations money placed on a credit card in the name of Americans , while Obama refuses to renegotiate the free trade act which is sending American jobs overseas by the millions.
Why is it that the public has no input to the health plan while they have the private health organizations by the boot load in their meeting.
Why is Obama insisting on having the republican's by electing him.

President Obama,
Please speak on Monday through Friday as you do in your radio addresses on Saturday morning. Or do you intentionally turn up the progressive rhetoric on Saturdays for the faithful, and then tone it down a notch for the establishment and Wall Street on Monday through Friday? I recall you said in one of your Saturday addresses a few weeks ago you were ready for a fight on health care. When is that fight going to start? We don't need any more tough talking Saturday morning mini-campaign speeches. We need to see the same type of rhetoric and more importantly actions on Monday through Friday or you know what, a lot of us are just going to start thinking you don't really mean it, or you mean it but you aren't willing to crack heads on Capitol Hill to get it.

Signed,
A realistic supporter and donor

Capitalism is a system whereby a few take advantage of the many. We don't need it anymore. It is velvet exploitation.

One of the first definitions of "capitalism" was from Louis Blanc's book, Organization of Labor (1850). He defined it as the "appropriation of capital by some to the exclusion of others."

I defy anyone to prove that "Capitalism" as an economic system was on the minds of this country's founders. You can't. Both Hamilton and Henry Clay embraced an Americanized form of mercantilism. And this is a fact.

Agreed, it's out control. A percentage of our federal, state, and federal tax dollars are now transferred to private enterprise while our schools, infrastructure, and public health systems continue to decline. Corporations and their lobbies have taken over our government at all levels with the implicit promise of sweetheart deals and golden parachute jobs upon leaving government awaiting the compliant. It used to be successful business people would go into public service in the twilight of their career. Now public servants view their government service as an apprenticeship to entering the private sector and gaining great wealth as payback. It's disgusting.

Unless you are well connected in Wall Street and Washington, then you don't fail, you just get massive taxpayer bailouts. Wake up, what we have is not capitalism, and improving what we have doesn't mean you only have 2 choices - tax cuts for the rich or socialism.

Trolls are frightened by this as they are out in force with their inane comments. Hey trolls, get some new ideas....telling us you were for Obama but have changed your mind now just doesn't cut it. We can see the truth from your words. You are repubs here to try to change minds......problem is the facts are on our side and luckily, we now have President Obama to fight for what's right. Has he been able to do all he wants in 5 months....probably not, but the repubs are certainly doing their best to keep any help from coming our way. So, go back to Drudge and Fox where your stupid comments might fly.
