I Like ItI Don’t Like It

AP: WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama said Saturday that current financial rules exploit consumers and he put critics of his proposed overhaul on notice: "While I'm not spoiling for a fight, I'm ready for one."

Obama used his weekly radio and Internet address to defend his recent proposal, which is intended to prevent a repeat of the breakdown that has sent the U.S. economy reeling. But such major changes face a fight in Congress and opposition from some leaders in the banking and insurance industries.

In the address, Obama focused on a consumer watchdog office that he wants to set up.

"This is essential," Obama said. "For this crisis may have started on Wall Street. But its impacts have been felt by ordinary Americans who rely on credit cards, home loans and other financial instruments."

The Consumer Financial Protection Agency would take over oversight of mortgages, requiring that lenders give customers the option of "plain vanilla" plans with clear and affordable terms.

"It will have the power to set tough new rules so that companies compete by offering innovative products that consumers actually want and actually understand," Obama said. "Those ridiculous contracts _ pages of fine print that no one can figure out _ will be a thing of the past. You'll be able to compare products, with descriptions in plain language, to see what is best for you."

More broadly, Obama's changes would begin to reverse the easing on federal regulations pressed by President Ronald Reagan in the 1980s. Democratic leaders in Congress are promising legislation will get passed this year, but that depends in part on how Congress answers big questions about the overhaul, including the role of the Federal Reserve.

"I welcome a debate about how we can make sure our regulations work for businesses and consumers," Obama said. "But what I will not accept _ what I will vigorously oppose _ are those who do not argue in good faith."

By that, Obama said, he meant those who defend the status quo at any cost. He didn't name any people or organizations, but said special interests are already mobilizing to fight change. He called that typical Washington.

"These are the interests that have benefited from a system which allowed ordinary Americans to be exploited," Obama said. The president said he would stand up for his plans, saying: "While I'm not spoiling for a fight, I'm ready for one. The most important thing we can do to put this era of irresponsibility in the past is to take responsibility now."

Good, Mr. President. Fight for the good of our country.
You're a good administrator, but we need a leader.

This headline should read, "Obama ready to fight the average citizen who voted for him!"

Let's speak honestly here folks, the Federal Reserve is the bane of our existence here on Earth.

Think about what cheap, easy, fiat money has done to our society and planet Earth. Is humanity better off with fiat currency?

Absolutely not but instead of fixing the root of evil Obama is clearing the way to have this evil control us even more so....

I suppose if I were President Obama and had collected a fortune of several million dollars I might think the current system wasn't perfect but it wasn't broken either. After all, if I am rich then other people can do it too if they would just write a couple books and work hard, and go to Harvard and become a lawyer and marry a lawyer. That is what happens to our elite, they lose touch and start to think of themselves as special and others as lazy.

Don't overestimate the intellectual curiosity of posters on this site.

And I agree that the Fed is the most dangerous entity that threatens the safety and security of all Americans. We need to press Congress to pass H.R. 1207: Federal Reserve Transparency Act of 2009 as soon as possible. It's not a complete fix, but it's a start.

So you want to protect consumers, aye Mr. President? Well, you could have started by protecting the health care consumer. But we're seeing how that is turning out, aren't we? So you'll forgive me if I don't jump up and applaud your latest effort. I want to see you actually accomplish something. Something other than caving in at the first sign of opposition, that is.

How is he going to 'protect' healthcare? He has two options: 1. veto. 2. invade congress. LOL!

Get up off your hinnies and let your politicians know you mean business. (See: Irn!)

Ya haven't fought for Universal Health Care - only universal health insurance.

Ya haven't fought for the rule of law - no prosecutions.

Ya haven't fought for the environment - permitting resumption of mountain top removal after it was halted.

Ya haven't fought for accountability - bank leaders still in power.

Ya haven't fought for Constitutional rights - permitting indefinite "detention" without trial or even habeus corpus.

...I _could_ go on - gay rights, budget, it goes on and on what you HAVEN'T fought for.

So whoop de doo if you actually fight for consumer protection - we're supposed to be satisfied?

I try to call the whitehouse weekly, sometimes more often, sometimes less, but I'm actively telling him what I think. You?

Meanwhile, posting here is not a waste of time; other people may be influenced. A meme may be generated and propagated.

Yeah sure Obo, you are a lot of hott air. I voted for you yes, and for any nutbag republican reading this, your poarty was not an alternative at all, but seriously Obama, unless you deliver on the promises you made to your core supporters and the people of this country, you are a worthless one termer.

Boy, I saw this and thought "Great". Now if he can only light a fire under all the Democratic Senators.

Where are all of you Republicans coming from on this Website?

As for the rest of you, sure Obama has not done everything we want him to, but we got to keep backing him and fighting for what we want. He has not been in office 6 months yet.

If you had John McCain for President, you would have nothing and you would be bombing Iran right now, or at least blustering over all the world right now. We have to earn credibility again.Do you understand that no country is going to follow us into battle anymore? And where are you going to get the money and manpower to do that?

Remember how the Republicans goaded Clinton into going into Kosovo and then when he did blasted him for doing it. Republicans are trying to set a trap for Obama just like the did Clinton.
Surely we can't expect any of you so sign up.

Obama has not been in office for 6 months yet. Keep fighting for Single Payer.

Bring back usury laws which cap interest rates. Lenders will then have to qualify borrowers again. The rate of default will fall dramatically. It's a favor to everybody. The credit industry has gone wild and predatory and somebody has to hit them pretty hard to stop the momentum. They are bribing congress and calling it lobbying, and congress loves every dime of it. Shine the light on this travesty.

Obama is turning the Fed in to its own governing body of and for the banks, unaccountable to congress or the people...and you really think this guy wants to protect the consumer. Obama has betrayed the world with his hollow calls for change. Everyone is starting to see it, but if you still think Obama is just peachy, I urge you to do some research and dig in to the facts. Remember how sickening all of the "go alongs" of the Bush era were? Well the Obama era is just as gross, and even more so, considering he keeps telling us he is something different than what he has proven

Mr. President so far you are all words and very few actions as far as bringing change. You still support the wallstreet and not the main street.

1. Banks bail out - pro business
2. mortgages - pro business
3. Healthcare - pro business
4. war in iraq - pro business (military business)
5. Gay/Lesbian issues - Pro Church
...
and I can go on and on ...

Too much retoric not that much action

Bank bail out - Bush
Mortages - Pro conservadems/Blue Dog Dems/Republicans. (*SEND STRONG DEMS TO THE HOUSE & SENATE)

Healthcare - Pro conservadems/Blue Dog Dems/Republicans (*SEND STRONG DEMS TO THE HOUSE & SENATE)

War in Iraq - We MUST stay and assist them even if they realize (at the moment) it's for their own good. We DESTROYED THEIR COUNTRY...WE HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO REBUILD

Gay/Lesbian issues - Give him time. Forcing the issue as they have been doing will only resort to what they wound up with with Clinton and is now fighting. Don't ask/don't tell is THEIR OWN FAULT! Impatience is what they had then and it seems they have yet to learn from it.

You are quite the little cheerleader, and that is very dangerous. As more time passes this administration reflects more and more of the Bush administration. I will be glad to give Obama credit when it is due, but right now he is selling out the middle class.

Emanuel made Obama's goals public when he stated that we are moving to the center (which is right) and they will ignore the progressive or left.

They have/are not only reaching out to the republicans and right but are taking their policies from Bush's last 8 years.

If Obama is not protecting Bush and the republicans why is he illegally refusing to let an open investigation and prosecution of the criminal crimes of the past 8 years.

I have a very simple rule about what kind of business are probably not being watched closely enough to protect consumers and thus need regulation. If you see a business on virtually every street corner they need to be strictly regulated because theres a lot of money being made and usually by taking unfair advantage of consumers. What do you see on every corner? Banks (and their credit card arms), payday loans, fast food restaurants and liquor stores. Generally food and liquor are regulated to protect consumers, at least to some degree, but the same can't be said about banks and payday loan leaches.

IT-work's being shipped offshore or in-sourced here to H1-B holders.
So there go the jobs 'we' don't-want-to-do.

I know that wasn't your point.
But I thought I would mention job losses.

Of all the calls I made complaining to the while house during Bush's criminal years I was never hung up on ,, but the person receiving the comments for Obama did after two sentences which were straight forward questions about why he is not fulfilling his promises while campaigning to his voters and citizens of this country..

I'm also stating to focus on the 2010/12'ers...Help me in your city/state/town/community to target these young folk who will be voting in 2010 & 2012. They've got to get involved now! We've got to rid our party of as many conservadems and blue dog dems as possible. They're the real problem with the Presidents agenda!

LET'S FOCUS PEOPLE...2010'ERS & 12'ERS should start pushing our agenda!

I get really tired of people (like the republicans) ALWAYS throwing stones with no ideas or solutioins to current situation! Let's start mobilizing NOW...!

So, who here is willing to help me in your city/state/town/park/community/villiage...Where ever! Let's get it started!

REGARDLESS...It's up to the PEOPLE. The Polls show that we're NOT doing our jobs. We have to get out (as I'm doing in my commuinity and surrounding coumminities) telling/informing people about the need of a single payer or a public option...Since single payer title is sssooo tainted.

All of you here that are complaining about what the President isn't doing...What exactly are YOU doing to help the situation. He can't do it alone! We've gotta take responsibility and help motivate others in order to get what WE want! Sad to say but so many...Actually, TOO many are ignorant of the facts!

GET OUT! HELP GET THE JOB DONE! STOP WHINNING! STOP COMPLINING! STOP BITC%ING!

WAYD? (What are YOU doing)

I agree. It's hard to make the first phone call, or send the first email to a congressperson if you haven't done it before - for some of us - but once you start doing it, about an issue or issues you care about, it gets easier - you will find that you too are "ready for a fight" as Obama put it.

Remember, THESE PEOPLE WORK FOR US. Not the other way around. Don't be intimidated.

(not everyone is - but I think plenty of people ARE intimidated by the title "Sentator" or "Representative" or "President," even if they don't admit it - there's a little fear there. After 8 years of Bush and Cheney, it's kind of understandable, isn't it??)

@sunshine: Yeah, you're right as well! We've gotta get people to get on the phone and off these blogs. This really doesn't help the situation! Will you do your part and get out in your community so that we can ALL be community organizers for the country? We MUST get President Obama the help he needs in order to get things done! If we don't all he will be able to do is talk and MSM likes to use that against him. Although they know the limits of his power. The rest is up to us. We too have a responsibility and WE'RE the ones falling short. We're the ones failing ourselves. We're ones failing to help ensure that there is a future for our future generation and generationis to come.

This is why they are moving the offices , manufacturing plants and jobs overseas.
We do not need to support these Giant corporations which are destroying our nation while the government helps by given them our money to move and setup shop overseas with.
Remember the name brands which you buy today are now made in China , India and other foreign countries.
Our nation has become a warehouse for the goods made overseas for the corporations which use to reside in our country..
They only use our country as base of protection by our military and operations for their overseas production.
