WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama on Saturday challenged Iran's government to halt a "violent and unjust" crackdown on dissenters, using his bluntest language yet to condemn Tehran's post-election response.

Obama has sought a measured reaction to avoid being drawn in as a meddler in Iranian affairs. Yet his comments have grown more pointed as the clashes intensified, and his latest remarks took direct aim at Iranian leaders.

"We call on the Iranian government to stop all violent and unjust actions against its own people," Obama said in a written statement. "The universal rights to assembly and free speech must be respected, and the United States stands with all who seek to exercise those rights."

Obama has searched for the right tone in light of political pressures on all sides. On Capitol Hill, Congress pressed him to condemn the Iranian government's response. In Iran, the leadership was poised to blame the U.S. for interference and draw Obama in more directly.

Obama met with advisers at the White House as developments in Iran grew more ominous, with police seen beating protesters.

"Suppressing ideas never succeeds in making them go away," the president said, recalling a theme from the speech he gave in Cairo, Egypt, this month.

"The Iranian people will ultimately judge the actions of their own government," Obama said. "If the Iranian government seeks the respect of the international community, it must respect the dignity of its own people and govern through consent, not coercion."

Obama's comments came as protesters outside the White House waved Iranian flags and denounced Iranian government efforts to suppress the protesters.

Protesters in Iran have demanded that government cancel and rerun the June 12 elections that ended with a declaration of overwhelming victory for hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Reformist presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi says he won and claimed widespread fraud.

Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said there was no ballot rigging. He warned of a crackdown if protesters continued their massive street rallies.

Then on Saturday, police in Iran beat protesters and fired tear gas and water cannons at thousands who rallied in open defiance of Iran's clerical government. Witnesses described fierce clashes after some 3,000 protesters chanted "Death to the dictator!" and "Death to dictatorship!" in downtown Tehran.

Obama's criticism came one day after both houses of Congress voted overwhelmingly to condemn the actions by the Iranian government against demonstrators and moves to interfere with Internet and cell phone communications. That was seen in part as a veiled criticism of Obama's response, too.

The president already was on record as saying the United States stood behind those who were seeking justice in a peaceful way. He responded to critics that he hadn't been forceful enough in support of protesters, telling CBS News: "The last thing that I want to do is to have the United States be a foil for those forces inside Iran who would love nothing better than to make this an argument about the United States. That's what they do."

That was Friday, before the conflict in Iran appeared to deepen.

Obama has refrained from passing final judgment on the underlying question of the legitimacy of the election itself, although he has expressed "deep concerns" about it.

The president returned Saturday to his theme that the world is watching the way the Iranian government responds.

Obama cited Martin Luther King's statement that "the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice."

"I believe that," the president said. "The international community believes that. And right now, we are bearing witness to the Iranian people's belief in that truth, and we will continue to bear witness."

Police clashed with protesters around Tehran immediately after the presidential election and gunfire from a militia compound left at least seven dead, but further force remained in check until Saturday's developments.

The National Iranian American Council, a leading organization of Iranian-Americans in the U.S., called for new elections while demanding an end to the violence "against unarmed protesters and bystanders."

"The only plausible way to end the violence is for new elections to be held with independent monitors ensuring its fairness," the group said in a statement. "Such elections would be consistent with the Iranian constitution."

Obama just needs to realize that regardless of his response to Iran, he is going to get hammered by the right.

But on the bright side, the more they oppose Obama on this issue, the more stupid they look. An example is Darrell Issa who tries to falsely compare Iran to Tiananmen Square.

Here is the clip.

And the Iranian protesters are not the colonial revolutionaries. When our ancestors overthrew their oppressors they had the support of foreign nations, as well as a boatload of guns they refused to allow the British to take from them. The Iranian protestors are unarmed (and because of this will be slaughtered en masse during the coming weeks by the iranian regime), and they are also seriously lacking support from foreign nations. They might as well stop protesting and just accept that Ahmadinejad won, because honestly... they are only inviting death if they continue down this path. We will not support them, the Europeans cannot support them, and they cannot stand up for themselves.

Obama can say the same to our own government and congress, "stop injust actions". We are ALL the same everywhere, expendable. Our future is as precarious as that of Iran.

Look at the pictures of what is going on in Iran and ask yourself if people were lighting fires in the middle of major intersections in America how long it would be before the government moved in and arrested everyone and put them away for awhile. Think back to the Republican National Convention in New York. They were rounding up people right and left for no reason other than they were on the streets and they were held in detention for 2-4 days. The idea that we would never do this here is wrong-headed we would and we have. Why is it that people won't demonstrate for much in America, and only those on the fringes ever do demonstrate. It's because they can't afford to go to jail, that's why.

Continue your quiet stance, President Obama. This is the only tact that will not backfire later. I do not think the Iranian people will completely topple their clerics and the election results will possibly prevail. In either case, we don't want to meddle and interfere as the republicans would have done if they had taken office. Can you imagine Sarah Palin and John McCain's actions had they been elected. Thank god they weren't.

We’ll Defeat Terrorism As It Should Be Fought

That flag on the moon with red and white stripes
Proves America’s dreams come true.
A country of heroes who line up to protect
The past, the present and the few.

We’ll defeat terrorism as it should be fought
Never letting Satan’s horde chase us to our door.
Safeguarding our borders and system of life
As our forefathers sacrificed before.

Never be afraid to be proud of America
And march with the brave, faithful and just.
Refusing to submit to the will of our enemies
Standing firm to preserve what we trust.

Kouross Esmaeli, an Iranian Filmmaker was just on CNN, spent the last four years filming a doc about the Basji I believe. An interesting thing happened. When asked what he thought about how the President is handling the Iran crisis, Esmaeli was very clear: He said they-- the protesters -- know who is supporting them and who is just out to benefit themselves politically and are using this crisis to do it. He said that President Obama was doing exactly what he should do. That the Republicans need to be quiet, because all of their tactics are hurting them. Ayatollah and those in charge are using everything the Republicans say against them (the protesters). The newscaster suddenly cut him off, mid-sentence saying they had to go to break, someone even cut the audio although he was still talking. I thought that was amazing....they didn't come back to him, went to another story instead.

Iranians are not stupid people. The Iran Freedom & Support Act is public knowledge.

It was passed in 2006 and allocates $10 million to pay people trying to overthrow tran's gov't. Including journalists & the media.

President Obama has not called for its repeal. He pretends it does not exist.

First of all, that is not exactly what the act is all about. I encourage people to read up on it.

Second of all, Obama cannot do everything in the course of a few months. Now he is supposed to have this repealed as well? How much is on his plate? Unreal. Some people will never be pleased. He is doing a great job, and his response is the right one. His response proves that he is not "behind" the protests, the people themselves are doing it. Some have already lost their lives for it.

The media is doing a good job on this one. Everyone stands behind the progressives, which is the correct stance and response. Believe it or not, sometimes people are sincere.

As for U.S. concern over the issue, do you grasp why the U.S. would be grateful to see the regime toppled by the people? Do you grasp that they may have a nuclear weapon soon and they are more likely to use it than the other nuclear nations?

Unreal. Nothing like taking the focus off of the oppression of the Iranian people in order to find a way to blame America. Even when we back progressives up, we are still bad people who are in the wrong. Some people seem to get a narcissistic, self-important kick out of blaming the U.S. no matter what. We should take the blame for our own share of wrongdoing in the world, but no more.

Our President does not want another war, which is exactly what the GOP wants. And exactly who is the $10M going to go to anyway? The people in the streets? They are trying to be anonymous; the dead cannot spend money . Do you actually know what the Act says and what it doesn't say? Even if he wants to repeal the act, aren't there just a few things on his plate that take priority?

You folks are out there quibbling over the fact that the President took his daughters for ice cream today. How petty, pathetic and small can you possibly be? When you have some real solutions, let me know. Would love to hear them.

When exactly did the US become the protector and supporter of those around the world seeking freedom from despots and tyrants? In MOST instances globally, it's those very depots and tyrants who have been installed with US support, that are the perpetrators of anti-democratic atrocities and injustice.
