New York Times:

People on the government's terrorist watch list tried to buy guns nearly 1,000 times in the last five years, and federal authorities cleared the purchases 9 times out of 10 because they had no legal way to stop them, according to a new government report.

If they were denied their 2nd Amendment right to bear arms the Republicans and the right wing would go ballaistic. An "armed society is a polite society" even if they may be terrorists.

The Constitution, written in 1788, permits a well regulated militia to carry muzzle-loading muskets. That's all.

Okay so the first one didn't fly. Let's try again.

The operative phrase being a "well regulated militia" not every Tom Dick or Harry with "manliness" issues.

(The mods didn't like the anatomically correct term.)

I agree with the other posters that the issue here is the watch list itself. How can a list that has a million names on it be useful for anything legitimate? Assuming there are a few people we would like the FBI keeping an eye on, do they have a another list? an extra-special terrorist really watch list?

Yes, of course. The entire Patriot Act should be scrapped.

And how can spying on everyone be useful for anything?

Yet Senator Ted Kennedy was on a 'no-fly' list for over a year. There's something wrong with this picture!

The terror watch list is a joke - and always will be until it is scrubbed, and only REAL terrorists are on it. Senator Edward Kennedy was on this list, for crying out loud. So, until the political BS is removed from the equation, no one should take any of this seriously.

There are over a million people on the terrorist watch list, including Ted Kennedy. It is a joke, but it's not funny.

There are two separate issues;

1) the so - called Patriot Act that should be scrapped

and

2) Domestic terrorists getting their hands on weapons and explosives

The Nazis killed millions, their crimes were heinous.

And yet we had prisoner of war camps all over the US with Nazis in them! After the war, many immigrated to the US.

We also had trials after WWII for war crimes, not indefinite detention.

Were all these things wrong in WWII as well? When did the conservatives in the US become such cowards, afraid of their own shadows?

Maybe it is time for the "patiriotic" conservatives, who are always spewing out "lets go and bomb them" to grow a pair and acturlly become tough guys and not just talk. I'm so tired of these tough politicians whining....."I don't want him in my top notch security prison-he might escape and hurt me" Chicken hawk cowards.

I have not been able to find anything actually verifying this story. However, I did find a question about this at Yahoo and this is a quote from one of the answers there, from subwm4 something. Most replies noted that the story had not been verified, either, but here are his comments:

"Yes, he was released by our Bush administration before the decision to close GITMO and hold the terrorists found guilty HERE in our federal prisons. We executed terrorist Timothy McVeigh at Terre Haute, Indiana. Why not do the same with those found guilty?"

The other comments directly stipulate Bush was responsible for this release to the Saudi's if, again, this happened. Obama had nothing to do with this.

Wasn't saying Bush didn't release him....proving a point that Obama should NOT CLOSE GITMO......or release the detainees......

The real scandal here is the list itself. One million names on a secret watch-list being maintained by the US government without any transparency, accountability or right of appeal? This neo-fascist horror is one of the first things Obama should have jumped on and rectified.

What this reveals, more than anything, is that only 1 out of 10 people on the list deserve to be there. Considering how many innocent Americans have been put on the terrorist watch list because they DARE to come out against what has become the American repressive government, and fight it/speak about it, I'm glad there is something that keeps these innocents from having their rights taken away from them, in any area. Any terrorist list that includes Naomi Wolf is not a list that Americans should be rooting for. In fact, we should be fighting it tooth and nail. TSA uses this list to harass and bully passengers attempting to board flights. Huffington Post has posted articles revealing lots of innocent Americans, Americans of standing and value, that have been put on that list because of their willingness to speak out, or simply because their names sounded similar to someone else the government is "watching."

This terrorist watch list is a fear tactic to make us even more complacent to the stripping of the constitution. Another way this government (and Obama is letting it happen now on his watch) is turning this country away from being a free society.

We shouldn't be fearing Americans able to purchase firearms on this list, but, rather, the list itself.

As I read through this I realize that even the 1 out of 10 people I mentioned in my email, above, might not deserve to be on that list.

This is just one more bucket of crap left from the bush administration's fake "War on Terror". After all is said and done, the only people who should be on today's "Watch Lists" are those who served within the bush administration, as well as those who served it from places such as the reich-wing media. Those are the people who've done more harm to this nation than 100000000000000 foreign terrorists armed with conventional weapons.

When it comes to bush and, his minions, I say; "War Crimes, Baby!! War Crimes!!!"

Looking at the wingnut blogs, they seem more concerned about the rights of suspected terrorists to buy guns than to have a fair and speedy trial (or even to have any trial at all). What a bunch of tools!

Enough of the fear-mongering...you don't need bigger locks on your door, you don't need a more elaborate alarm system. These 'boogeymen' are placed in your head by people who use those fears to make you stop questioning authority and do as your told.

I've always found it suspicious that we've been "given" the "right to bear arms" by a newly formed government that already had a fully armed and trained military presence...

We weren't "given" any rights by any government . We always had them, and The Constitution and The Bill of Rights include, in writing, specific prohibitions on the government messing with certain ones of them.

The Constitution wasn't written until several years after the end of the Revolutionary War, so that "fully armed and trained military presence" was dispersed by then.
